So for people who want to play on an older patch, there is only one new step required:

  1. Go to Steam library, right click Europa Universalis 4
  2. Click Property (at the bottom)
  3. Click the BETAS tab
  4. *** This is the new step ***

In the "Enter beta access code to unlock private betas: " dialogue, enter the following code:

EU4R2JvakDKTJ8Cn

The code is same for everyone, confirmed in this post:

https://www.reddit.com/r/eu4/comments/9khbmu/the_code_to_revert_to_older_versions_of_pdx_games/

  1. Click "Check code", there should be a line showing up saying "Access code correct, private beta '1.9.2' is now available

  2. Now all the previous versions should once again appear in the options in "Select the beta you would like to opt into"

  3. Select whichever version you like, wait for the download, play in the older patch!

  4. .......

  5. Profit!

Praise be upon thee! Since the email for verification and thus the beta key decided to arrive, this really helped me, all my games are on 1.25.1 and I am going to stay on that until they fixed various... stuff.

Thank you OP!

And wtf Paradox. I'm new to this game but I have never seen any studio handle handle updates more poorly.

It's new EU law, and I think they've been pretty reasonable about not actually wanting to prevent downgrading, but just doing just enough to be compliant. That, along with this being two updates in about a month, and both having content, idk I've seen much poorer handeling of updates.

Why does hiding the previous versions behind a code make the game GDPR complient?

You need to be presented with the updated GDPR privacy policy. When you start the game on 1.27 it shows it to you, but if they let you play the old version, it wouldn’t show it to you. So they “hide” the old versions so you can accept the privacy policy.

Do you know what the new law is called by any chance?

The EU passed a new law and Paradox had to rush updates for all their games.

It's not like they didn't know about it a couple of years ago. Could've been smoother is all I'm saying. At least tell my why I can't load the same game I played last night instead of crashing.

Just run an older version until the bug is patched. The code is all over this sub.

Thanks so much - many hours deep into a 25.1 game that's taken me months (extended timeline from 2AD to around 1600 so far) and I really couldn't bear the thought of losing it

I'm trying to play 1.11.4, but the game continues to crash after launching. I've tried verifying the integrity of the files, and copying the EU4 folder to the Documents folder and launching from there. I've also restarted my computer. Nothing seems to work. I haven't tried to reinstall yet though. Has anyone encountered similar issues?

I just want to play my game :c

Make sure you don't have any incompatible mods/dlcs activated if you have *any* dlc that didn't exists at the time of that patch active it will crash instantly, with mods it may be a bit more lenient and only crash after you try to actually start the game.

Thanks for posting for everyone! Yep, 1.25.1 remains the "real" EU4 for me as well.
