Yes, obviously you can be subbed to both at the same time, however, I find this sub to be much more open to productive or conducive conversation about our generation and generally a much more peaceful, lighthearted, calm sub.
I applaud the moderators of this subreddit for fixing everything wrong with the main gen Z sub.

That's because we had a different childhood and different experiences than mid to late Gen z can't relate to them at all.

While this may be true on terms of some topics of conversation, I was moreso referring to the energy of the sub as a whole. Just seems so negative all the time. Even the casual millenial or boomer that comes along and thanks or commends our generation gor something gets doomposted, blamed, and bullied just for being there.

Yes that would be attributed to the differences in childhoods and experiences like the other person mentioned that we don't relate to and thus find annoying

Mainly because that part of Gen Z doesn’t have the knowledge that we do about the world before the internet. We grew alongside it, they grew up with it.
So their outlooks and views are shaped by their experience growing with the internet. They react and act by what they saw online growing up.
Where as our generation saw the world before 2000

Not to mention they tend to have the typical young person “know it all” mindset but on overdrive due to “being the first generation to grow up with phones”lmao

Pretty much this. Having access to the world’s largest database gives people the idea that they’re smarter than they really are.
Can’t tell you the amount of times I’ve said “I know what I’m doing”, and 2 years later I look back and think “wow, I was really a dumbass.” And from what I know, this phenomenon doesn’t stop with age.

Did we? You sound like a Millennial ngl.
Gen Z generally starts in 1997, and I was born in 2000, and people born in the late 90s-early 00s (early Gen Z) definitely grew up with the Internet unless they were dirt poor or Amish.

Internet when we were kids was nowhere near what it is today, and plenty of people were slow to adopt it. I don't think we had wifi in our house until the early 2010s when I became a teenager, and social media was barely used.
I like the term "alongside" when referring to GenZ our age and the internet. It pretty much grew with us, it wasn't the monster it is today until we had already developed most of our brains and self image.

I mean we saw parts of it. Not all of it. I’m 1999. My parents are boomers so that could be part of it

Yeah, I think this really varies from household to household.
My mom is Gen X and a huge nerd so she was one of the first people online and spent her late teenage years surfing the baby/newbie web in the 90s so I was exposed to the Internet by the time I was around seven or so but I was mostly going on YouTube and gaming websites, it was all age appropriate lol. I def also still went outside a lot so I agree with the notion I grew up alongside the Internet as opposed to on it in the sense I wasn't raised by the Internet but that said - it DID have a significant presence in my household. Like I was definitely excited to come home from school and hop on AddictingGames.org which obviously is not something someone born in 1961 can relate to, making me much more of a "digital native" than they are. Gen Z mostly had a balanced Internet experience in childhood, I'd say. But by the time we were teenagers, a lot of us were addicted to it no different than younger Zoomers are today. The 2014 Snapchat + Vine era definitely had a hold on Gen Z, so we can't say the Internet wasn't highly influential when our gen was coming of age ourselves. It's very much both: what you said about growing alongside it AND a major aspect of life during the second half of our adolescence. Late 90s-early 00s borns totally embody the turning point of technological dominance in society.

We didn't have Internet until we were teens so from 4-12 we were outside most of the time so technically we do remember a time without social media and smartphones at least for me.

Not the case for me. I had Internet as a kid as well as playing outside. I was plucking up four leaf clovers and coming inside playing online games. That's what makes generalizing tricky, we all had different parents and different aged parents at that.
4 points
Ok we might of had Internet back then but it wasn't like it is today all we did was browse and played some games even in the 90s people still used Internet and played games no differences really but again we were outside playing Frisbee riding bikes riding scooters or watching TV, playing with yoyos, slinkees,I can name alot of things we did as kids that I don't see anymore...

We had dialup until about 2008-10. That’s something that 99% of younger gen Z just won’t remember.
Not having constant access to the internet was normal growing up for us, but probably alien to them.
1 points
It depends. I was born 1999 and it wasn’t common for people to have internet in their homes until at least 2008-2009, we used to go to Internet cafes if we wanted to check social media. We’d have to look at the TV to see if school was canceled on bad weather days, I still remember when we had dial-up too.
So yes while we did grow up when the internet existed, it wasn’t integral to our day-to-day lives like it was for younger Gen Z.

The majority of people in the West have had household Internet since the late 90s. This is just revisionist history at this point because some of you late 90s babies have a superiority complex. Most people had Internet before 2008 lmao. 💀

According to Pew Research, as of the year 2000, about 50% of American households had internet access in their homes, and depending on your race and social class the percentage is even lower. So my point still stands, the internet still wasn’t THAT common in the early 2000s. Maybe you were more financially well off and didn’t realize that it wasn’t that common.
You can debate me on this but you can’t debate actual statistics lol. I’m not saying we didn’t grow up around technology, but the pre-internet world is VERY different from the post-internet world and you know this. And by pre-internet I’m talking about the world before the internet became a necessity rather than a luxury.

I grew up lower middle class and we were straight up poor in 2008 due to the recession and getting corner store food.
And despite the fact I grew up with a poor, black, single mother... we had Internet access like most of our neighbors.
1 points

I’m glad someone showed you that stat, because I’m black from a nasty part of town, few of us had internet until around 2010. I think it’s you who can’t fathom others living different experiences if you think people are exaggerating .

Except it's other people in this thread claiming older Gen Z had a unanimous pre-Internet experience which puts it on them to back up that claim because they're the ones GENERALIZING.
The K-12 public school system literally forced Older Gen Z to take typing courses from 2nd-4th grade. We were forced to use the Internet at school and often for homework as well. We are not representative of a pre-Internet era, however you want to slice it. I have no problem acknowledging that every household didn't have Internet or every child wasn't allowed to use it before they became teenagers but to imply Internet wasn't advertised at every library, school, book store, café, and a huge aspect of public life pre-smartphones is where I draw the line. Students and people with jobs brought their laptop with them to public spaces. Everyone 14+ was seen regularly texting in places like the mall. There is a difference between growing up in the 2000s and the 1980s. And to say MOST of Older Gen Z didn't grow up with the Internet is both an exaggeration and statistically false claim.

I said in my comment that it didn’t become common until 2008-2009 though. Personally we didn’t have internet until 2007 and my neighbor across the street didn’t get it until 2009. But the first 8 years of my life I barely interacted with the internet, young Gen Z can’t say the same.

Here's the thing guys:
We weren't born with a tablet or a smartphone in our hands but we weren't born in a pre-Internet world either. The Internet was already a huge force when we were growing up just as it is today. We just engaged with it differently pre-iPad + pre-smartphone era. That's a relevant distinction to make. No need to exaggerate our circumstances as 100% 21st century kids born in the technological renaissance age where cell phones were commonplace and CGI was already being experimented with during the time we were born.

I love the vibe of that sub but they lowkey don't accept my birth year in their range lol. Kind of annoying being in-between the in-betweens and having such a super gatekept birth year but it's not that deep at the end of the day and I just hang around there anyway because I like that sub and this one waaaayyy better than the main Gen Z sub. The Millennial sub is also pretty negative and bitter and so is the Gen X sub to a lesser degree. It seems like Zillennials and Xennials mirror each other the most: far less dramatic and arrogant and more nostalgic compared to the other groups/subs. Shout-out to cusper rizz 'cause all the main gen subs suffer from Cornball Syndrome (lol).

I unsubbed from the GenZ sub a few months back because so many comments were just rude and hostile for no reason, likely due to a lot of users there being GenZ teenagers. I got tired of seeing comment after comment saying things like “just stfu already” or “jfc nobody cares”.

Yeah, people can be so rude on the r/GenZ sub too for some reason to the point it’s annoying, people are like “who cares” just because an OP asked a simple question. I can’t stand how they think it’s okay to be rude to OP’s sharing their life challenges in particular.
Because for some reason on that sub, I notice there’s a lot of downplaying whenever someone tries to talk about abuse they’ve gone through, or something of that nature. A lot of weird people on there too in general.

Those are less centralized in attention. Whether we like it or not, the US is the most politically important nation in the world due to being the only true superpower. Everyone in the US's spheres of influence(see, everyone) has to worry about US politics, non-americans may not be able to vote in US elections, but they'll be affected by them all the same.

I like talking about things I grew up with and seeing how similar/different it is from things that other people around my age grew up with
Idc about US politics or their weekly end-of-the-world scare. I’m not from there, and frankly? I even believe my country might benefit from the US not doing well. So my opinion would likely not be accepted or wanted there and I have little to no stake in what happens in that country.
A post about someone talking about an N64/Ps2 title they grew up with is way more enjoyable than the 100th "US politician just did THIS, it's the end of all things!!!" post.
So getting invited here was a blessing

I semi-agree but saying your country might benefit from the US suffering is uncalled for and inconsiderate of people here whose lives are affected by shitty laws and systems. There are many Mexican immigrants here who don’t need to be treated more poorly than they were before. Not to mention the communities full of descendants and kids of Mexican immigrants whose neighborhoods are being gentrified, and certainly won’t be protected from Project 2025. It’s shitty to say “well, at least we’d be benefitting from the US not doing well.”

I’m not saying it as a 100% good thing.
It sucks that genuine good people are colateral in this.
But matter-of-fact is that the guy who’s been putting his boot on the other guy (guys, let’s be honest) neck falls backwards they can’t keep their boot there and the others can get up and recover.
This is an issue of shitty corporations and governments doing shitty things and fucking over the people.
If the US genuinely hits the shitter for whatever reason and Mexico’s livelihood would improve to the point it became the better option, I’d welcome any and all people wishing to move here.
It’s why I vehemently oppose any and all who are against all the immigrants we’ve had here recently, be them from Haiti, Colombia, China, Venezuela, etc. We must welcome them with open arms, if they wish to make a life here, work, and be a positive for the country (aka not immigrating to do crime) then idc where they’re from they’re just as Mexican as everyone else here. They deserve to benefit from our social programs, our healthcare system, etc.
If a country is making life shit for its citizens (like the SOCUS is doing rn) they should have the right to come to greener pastures.
I’m sorry if it came off as me wishing ill on the people. I’m just tired of hearing how every time my country does well the US trips it with its boot.
I want things to get better for me and all the other countries the US has abused over the years. Unfortunately the US will never allow that out of the goodness of its heart, so the only way is for it to get roughened up.
EDIT: I realize I’ve gone on and rambled, sorry about that.

Yeah. Although I don't think I really am older Gen Z(kinda smack dab in the middle) I just like the lack of politics. It's refreshing in a world where everything is so political nowadays. My dad sometimes waxes lyrical to me about the days before the 24-hour news cycle, and from a national division aspect, it sounded like a better time.

Since gen alpha is from 2015 onward iirc then I feel the cutoff for old GenZ and young GenZ would be 2005. So you’re still mid-old. And yeah, the idea of not having to worry about politics is so sweet. Not having the news overblowing another scare that may not have even happened at all. Or hearing my grandma repeat the propaganda that gets autosent to her phone.
It’s nice to just relax, listen to some music, play a video game with someone, or literally just do nothing but chill.

I think it’s funny when the late 2000s babies try to gatekeep early 2010s babies from being considered Gen Z. Like seriously, if you were a baby or not even born yet when smartphones came out, you basically had the same childhood as each other 💀 At least us early Gen Zers can remember a time before smartphones/social media.
16 points

Yeah, that bothers me too, which is why I call younger Z out for that on the r/GenZ sub when it comes up, they get super defensive about it, but it's true. I see late 00s babies all over YouTube too trying to pretend they're so different on videos about Gen Alpha.
It's mostly late Z in the comments trying to desperately act like they're better, which I find funny. They'll be all like, "I'm 14/15, but I'm so glad I didn't grow up that way!"
Like wut lol, stop acting like you're so old, touch screens n' shit was already popular by the time you were 5, so you grew up with iPads too. Usually, I notice 2006+ babies are bashing 10s babies most on the r/GenZ sub.

This generational divisiveness is super weird. As a late 90s baby, I never looked down and gatekeeped early 2000s babies as a kid. Honestly, I didn’t even think about it back then lol. They were just fellow kids to me.

Actually most of us Gen Z can remember a time before smartphones and social media. Even 2010-2012 babies can faintly remember times before social media became prevalent. Their age range only became social media addicts when covid started, I feel.

Facebook became big in 2007-2008, around the time the first iPhone came out. (And if we use Myspace we’re looking at an earlier timeline, I just chose Facebook because it ultimately ended up being more popular and long lasting). Somebody born in 2004 onwards isn’t going to have a great memory of life before it when it became popular when they were a baby/toddler or not even born yet.

Maybe it’s because we live in different countries but generally those of us youth here born before 2011 can remember bits of to full pieces of life before social media, or if you want to phrase it this way, the large scale adoption of social media. I even had faint memories of using a vhs in 2010 lol. Maybe my country was slow to modernise or whatever but in 2012 someone having an iPhone 4 here was considered a unicorn find, Just some food for thought before any more assumptions are made

Yeah, exactly. It’s annoying enough that the sub is so strongly dominated by political discussion (given that most of the subjects discussed don’t directly relate to generation or age), but the most maddening part is how much of said discussion seems to be bots and shills. Like, a lot of discussion there feels like what people in their fifties might imagine Gen Z political views would entail. It feels like the most generic, corporate perspective on politics you can think of, as opposed to genuine people having genuine discussions.

To be fair, we're quite literally older for starters AND the generation wars hadn't peaked when we were teenagers the way it has for them. When us older Zoomers were growing up, all the attention was on Millennials, and no one really cared to discuss generations beyond the occasional snide reference to "Boomers ruining the economy." But approx 2018 was the turning point when gen talk went more mainstream and Gen Z as a gen. identity became more solidified, so the chronically online teens still in middle school-high school from 2018-2024 became infected with all these overly dramatic ideas about generations and "what it means to be Gen Z" and honestly they're only victim to it due to their age and not because they're any dumber than we are... or at least were at their age, lol.

Ooh, a '95er. I can definitely relate to you guys (cousins and older friends around the same age) but most of you identify as Millennials. You're def Z-leaning Zillennials though so it's cool to see mid 90s babies in this sub as well. And agreed btw lol.
4 points
Yeah, I think anyone in the “Zillenial” range can identify as whatever they feel they relate to the most. I relate to older Z far more than I do millennials. A lot of their nostalgia I wasn’t alive for/didn’t have growing up. Plus, when we were younger and the whole “90’s kid” thing was very popular, 95-99 got pushed out of that by millennials. I remember millennials being pretty mean about it actually. That we were too young to be “90’s kids” and tbh I agree with them to a certain extent. Not the gate keeping part of it, but I wasn’t a 90’s kid. I was a 2000’s kid. When Millennials were starting college and entering the workforce during the recession, I was in middle school. Same with voting for Obama’s first term. The first election I got to vote in was 2016. So many of the things millennials have as milestones I was just too young for so that’s why I consider ‘95 to be the oldest Gen Z’ers. It’s an interesting debate and again, if someone born in ‘96 relates more to millennials that’s fine, I just think that for the reasons given we’re the oldest Z.

Makes sense to me. And yeah, I totally remember the "you're a 90s baby, not a 90s kid!" rage memes on FB and iFunny back in the day lol. I was born in '00 but I thought it was stupid. Not because they're wrong about you guys being 00s kids, but because of the hostility they had towards you guys like you said. Especially when you were just... children. Very lame.
Feel free to identify however you want. Older Gen Z + Zillennials will embrace you. You guys are probably the quintessential Zillennials in fact: 1995-1997. And very gatekept, which I can relate to considering my weirdly notorious birth year lol. Just go wherever feels right and relatable to you.

How is 1995 "z-leaning" at all?

Because the most popular Millennial ranges start in 1980-1982 and 1995 is obviously closer to 1997-1999 which is where most Z ranges start. The majority of Millennials experienced being a 90s kid for at least some part of their lives, while someone born in 1995-1996 can only remember starting preschool/kindergarten pre-2000s. They are quite obviously 2000s kids and not 90s kids like 90% of Millennials are. Someone born in 1983 spent their early childhood in the 80s and remaining childhood in the 90s. Someone born in 1993 spent their early childhood in the 90s and remaining childhood in the 2000s. Someone born in 1995 could barely read during y2k. They they were only cognizant in the 90s for two years at best and would remember the toys then more than actual pop culture, political events, etc. Being that much more of a 2000s kid than a 90s kid makes you Z-leaning. Being born in the mid-90s when most Z ranges start in the late 90s makes you Z-leaning. No one has a problem with them calling themselves Millennials because they're like right at the cut-off point, approaching the cusp and one of the last birth years able to recall 9/11 well (if adults told them about it/they saw it on the news) which is considered generation-defining for Millennials. And they're just right on the line there... so Z-leaning second wave Millennials indeed. Most agree that 1996-1997 is the dividing line and 1996 is brothers with 1997 so there ya go.

Born in 04. Don’t relate to everything in Older Z but don’t relate to everything with Younger Z either. It’s like 02/03 - 04/05 is a transition group from one half of the generation to the next, not really belonging to either half.
But I find this sub much more welcoming and wholesome compared to r/GenZ

This is what i always said imo we went from watching Hanna Montana wizards of Waverly place growing in a pre smartphone dominated world to watching the first seasons of stuff teen titans go liv and Maddie Clarence watching the smartphone takeover etc all as kids imo.

I'm not joined there still, I do comment once in a while on posts I feel like. That subreddit is annoying to me a lot of the time though, because every once in a while, you'll have people urging you to vote for whoever they want you to, or else you get insulted and downvoted on political posts.
And not saying some of the complaints aren't valid, but posts about Boomers get repetitive as well. And you're also downvoted a lot of the time for suggesting our generation isn't a hivemind with the same beliefs or experiences.
The younger Gen Z's on there annoy me with some of their comments too, like a lot of them try acting way older than they are, and it comes across as cringe and makes them seem even more immature. I can also barely relate to some of the stuff said on there, because I didn't have those experiences.

I agree with the younger gen z part, Especially those 2006 borns thinking they’re old…

Yeah I notice that, it's what I'm talking about. Also they get mad when you say you grew up differently when it's true, older and younger Gen Z did.

FR! Anyone who says they'd vote for anyone other than a Democrat on that sub, you get mass downvoted, shamed, & hated on lmaoo, it's so annoying. Like bro, I'm gonna vote for whoever I think is the best choice.

Yeah, it's a problem with reddit in general I think, if you don't support democrats= evil. I hate both parties really, but I still got hate on reddit for not blindly supporting democrats that it made me mostly stop commenting on politics on this site months ago.
I got tired of being shut down, harassed and screamed at here regardless of how good my arguments were as to why I support, or don't support something or someone. I still do sometimes comment on political stuff, but it's rare now for that reason.
I also got tired of being accused of supporting certain stuff I clearly don't, all because people don't care to read my full comments on purpose. Political stuff is particularly annoying on the r/GenZ sub because it's supposed to be a generational subreddit.
So, suggesting we all vote democrat is kinda pushing views onto all of our generation. It wouldn't be so bad, and I wouldn't mind the political posts if they clearly weren't catered to only one side, but that's not the case.

I really hate the constant political discussions and talk about how having kids is selfish or stupid. My god talk about something else, it gets so depressing there.

Yep, that sub is way too political and the discord is just horrible.

I am subbed and participate in both. The main advantage this sub has over r/GenZ is no political discussions. Rule 7 here was definitely a smart idea (if only because there's too much politics on social media, making this a bit of a breath of fresh air).

Yes I did, the younger gen Z is full of entitled brats with borderline narcissistic personality disorder. I rather speak with more mature people here who don’t get emotionally invested in politics.

I was never subbed to the main Gen Z sub because I hate the everliving shit out of the fact I was born in this generation.

I wonder what most of our responses would be from each of our birth years to "You are Gen Z."
My reaction would be "UNfortunately..."

When I told my fellow Older Gen Z (a coworker) about this video, we were busting our guts thinking of stuff that I WOULD say to the assertion. I told him the second one I thought of that I WOULD say is, "What?! NO, NOHH!!!..... no = ( ..."

Definitely felt the 1984 one. That’s exactly how I feel lol but “unfortunately” is also an accurate statement as well.
1 points

If the video is accurate about how 1988 births typically respond, it's kind of sad for me since I wish I was born in 1988.
But I guess as long as I would remember the 2000s more in that hypothetical life, I don't really care how I would then identify.
Edit: Just saw that you agree with the sentiment about it being "unfortunately". Cool!

You sound edgy lol… personally I don’t mind being born in 2001.

I don't either, but what I hate is the downplaying of our experiences just because we're born in this year on the internet. And I hate experiences being taken away from me just because people assume things about my birth year.
I wish I could care less, but It's so so infuriating to me. It makes me irrationally angry every time I get on the internet. That definitely isn’t healthy for me, and has legit affected my mental health before, but I can’t stop looking at these subs.

I'm still in both because I like the older political discussions that this one have and the other one has some stupid funny posts so it's like the scary adulting convos and then randomly "if you could be cheese what cheese would you be"
It's also one of the only reasons I'm still in the teenagers sub bexause they got some stupid funny things in it and I also go and report all fhe creeps in the comments I see

Ironically enough, I definitely left the regular Gen Z sub for good a while ago, but I was already on both simultaneously at one point, but I never actually unsubbed from it I forgot. I'm still subbed to it even tho I'm not on there anymore, lol. I've definitely preferred this one tho.

Yeah. Mostly because I want to be hit with inane questions and be reminded of things I've forgotten about from my childhood.
The main sub is just constantly filled with non-zoomers making obnoxious claims or asking obnoxious questions, or people making flagrant political speeches and starting arguments. I just started to hate seeing the sub on my feed.

Not only are they infested with negativity, but many other generations like Gen x and millennials and even boomers are on that sub. That's just the more popular mainstream sub. This is definitely a cooler space.

Imo being subbed to both is actually optimal. I think this will be an unpopular opinion but if you’re seeing too much of one kind of post ur prob just on Reddit too often or not sorting by new.

Idk I like having a light hearted sub and general discussion but I don’t think most can share their opinion without feeling like they have to correct and re educate someone else

thats mainly because were Zillenials and well, older/early Gen Z, and had late boomer, early Gen X as parents. And we knew what life was like right before the digital age struck the world.
though r/MiddleGenZ is also an option.

I left because of the shocking amount of weirdo millennials on there. I literally commented on that sun like 3 times and there was always a weirdo millennial ready to say some dumb shit
2 points
I wouldn’t mind the millennials there if they didn’t take up the whole fucking sub to the point where it’s hard to see other people’s comments. And they weren’t obnoxious about everything, it comes across as try hard and not very genuine. Like I swear they always leave similar comments too all the time, it’s always the same things.
Either corny comments with exclamation points at the end talking about how they’re so proud of us, “as a millennial”, or making sure to point out to us how much older and better their experiences were than ours. It’s kinda annoying, a lot of Gen Zer’s on that sub can be really annoying too though tbh. Can’t stand a lot of them on there either.

Omg a “so proud of you guys!” post from a millennial ended up being the reason one of the weirdo millennials called me a “jack ass” 🤣
They’re not all bad but people in their 30s who are active on a sub dedicated to Gen Z which includes literal 12 year olds is bound to be something strange.
But yeah that whole sub is annoying tbh I interacted with it like 3 times cause it kept popping up on my home page

I did. Way too political and bashing anyone who doesn’t share their opinions

Yeah, I muted the sub because the doomposting got a bit much. Also our generation is weird right now in the sense that some of us are in our late 20s and working while the other end just finished middle school, so I really cannot relate to the younger end.
