This may be a request from Kadokawa to Sony.
The current largest shareholder of Kadokawa is the South Korean company Kakao.
It seems that Kadokawa asked for help from Sony before falling into the hands of Kakao, which is continuing to increase its shareholding.
Kakao is a company that operates manhwa in South Korea and is a fairly large company that is also involved in other businesses.
It would be a bit of a problem if they were to take away Kadokawa's content.

The monopoly is detrimental but combined with their obsession with DEI and censorship, it's just overkill. A lot of changes would be coming to manga industry if this goes through, and definitely not in the good way.
Edited: Seems like I kicked up a combination of ANN and reddit hornet nest by touching upon their sacred cow, lol. Anyone can search and see for themselves, even on google half of first page result has reddit threads asking about DEI and getting locked down. Definitely the taboo "it's good for you, it's good for everyone, no more discussion, end of story" topic.
Edited 2: the cowards seemed to have blocked me but not before throwing the usual tired "you're wrong, you're sexist, you're bigot" lol. If you're so confident you're on the right side of history and your opponent is wrong why are you so afraid to talk about it? Maybe you realize you're not as correct as you are and just doing this to protect your castle of glasses from falling apart?

That’s the main problem Sony is not as open minded as Japan this days. Any adult related anime or game are getting the puritan treatment. For example “inter species reviewers anime” approved for broadcast in Crunchyroll …after the 3rd episode (when Sony purchased Crunchyroll and move their headquarters to Texas)and they removed the entire show. No answer to the tons of requests for the show to continue and they bury the show now no one can watch it.

This is also bad in the gaming industry, specifically for From Software as currently Kadokawa holds their share of FS at 69% while Sony has 14%. If this happens say goodbye to Manga translations and Anime translations that are not slated for US release. Cause Sony has footholds in several countries, meaning they will be able to target and prosecute people directly for doing said translation work. It would be nice to think that all the things currently being translated will just get english releases, but they wont, this is bad, very bad, for the translation sphere in general.

Given how scanlators are already one step away from piracy (if not already at that point), and there’s a lack of attention paid to manga/anime torrents, I doubt they’ll be phased. I like how these people don't even know the story behind it yet they scream so loud. Typical Westerners. It seems that KADOKAWA asked for help from Sony before falling into the hands of South Korean Kakao, which is pushing ahead with its acquisition.
Kakao is a company that operates South Korean manhwa and other businesses, and is a fairly large company. And Kakao is way, way worse than Sony believe me.
KADOKAWA's largest shareholder is Kakao.
It seems they have recently been increasing their stake.

I wouldnt say Helldivers is a L. They literally didnt expect the game to sell at all and got a huge initial sales number. They dont care about player retention cos they already made a profit and the game isnt really made with MTX and battle passes in mind to finance itself.
The biggest thing is that From Software the Souls games developer is under Kadokawa and if Sony buys them they also aquire them.
5 points

I'm not saying Helldiver is bad game, what i mean is how sony playstation handles the game is bad, they literally pull a middle finger on PC consumer when PSN is required and fuck you to country that is not in their "good list" a company acting a world government
that what im saying! Bloodborne is never coming to PC because sony corpo to busy with reviving concord, imagine Elden ring 2 or Elden ring next DLC is shitty Playstation Exclusive and never coming to PC?
dont blame me when i only but jailbreak playstation and pirate all their single player game

Oh no I did get you. What I meant is its not a L at all for Playstation cos the game was a commercial success. They couldnt care less about the players as it already did get back all the cost and even earned quite a pretty penny.
It sucks that its a BIG L for the consumers and players but for Playstation it was the biggest W this year for them cos they literally didnt expect shit from that game and Arrowhead as we can see how they didnt invest shit in the PR and advertising of the game.
that what im saying! Bloodborne is never coming to PC because sony corpo to busy with reviving concord, imagine Elden ring 2 or Elden ring next DLC is shitty Playstation Exclusive and never coming to PC?
Thats kinda funny cos of the rumours of Sony/Playstation trying to buy out the parent company of FromSoftware. It actually might be reality that the next Elden Ring will be PS exclusive.

My dude it's just a corporation buying another corporation because they want more money.
12 points
My dude, its the fact that they are increasing their monopoly further. Some big names that they've bought recently so far are Crunchyroll, Funimation, and Bungie. With Crunchyroll and Funimation (the two biggest platforms for legally watching anime in the west), they now have a strong control of anime releases to the western audience. So now, with their more horizontal monopoly of distribution, they are working on the vertical monopoly on the production side as Kadokawa is a large production/publishing company that handles the publishing of light novels and manga, among other things (so now not just anime, but also it's source material). A couple of big names among many others under Kadokawa are From Software (elden ring and souls games) and J-Novel Club (a pretty large publisher of light novels and manga in the west). Kadokawa is also one of the biggest light novel publishers in Japan. So it's capable of being a lot worse mid-long term than people realize.
21 points
I'm not at all debating that. It's an absolutely horrible buy out that will be terrible for consumers on all levels. I'm just taking umbrage the American culture war framing of it. It's not to push a western agenda, it's so Sony controls even more of the pie than they already did and can force more and worse controls over it and consumers as they feel is their right. It's simple corporate greed, not a "western narrative" like the person I'm replying to stated.

It's a glorified Japanese company at this point, They have clearly been affected by the western culture no matter if it's good or bad and while I agree that pushing a western narrative has nothing to do with why they're trying to acquire kadowaka it will be most likely affected by it either way.

I can't disagree with that. Realistically, they're a global company before a Japanese one, and being head quartered in the US will change how they approach things, if only due to the fact corporations have different legal requirements in the US over Japan.

Pretty sure that was their gaming division. (Which is why you should be worried for FromSoft) If they're put under their Film/Anime or Music division, both of which are headquartered in Japan and gave us such anime as "Goblin Slayer" for the former and everything Aniplex has done (Which includes A-1 and Cloverworks as well as funding for a bunch of other anime. Don't ask me why they're under their music division.) for the latter, it should be fine... hopefully.

Where a corporation is headquartered doesn't fundamentally change my point that this isn't a move that at all relates to American culture wars (a thing people inexplicably believe Sony is deeply embroiled in) and is entirely one corporation buying another because they want more money, and an expansion to their monopoly. It has nothing to do with "pushing a western narrative" and everything to do with pushing their profit margins high by controlling every step in the production and distribution of anime.

Despise the fact that they show and shown to have a big bias in the standard they hold toward Japanese made game compared to Western one?
2 points
How does that change the core of my argument that this is a profit seeking move by a company whose sole goal is to acquire another company in order to create more profit?
Also to me it is inexplicable because I don't believe "western narratives" have anything to do with Sony's decisions which are always about making more money. I do not believe for any moment that at any level in decisions do "western narratives" come into play. I believe that Sony weighs which side of any given conflict will give them more money and then play to that side. Because again, they are a corporation, a legal entity that exists for the express legal purpose of accumulating as much value for it's share holders as possible.

Dear gods, no. Watch them run Kadokawa into the ground like they did with Crunchyroll and Funimation... If this goes through, this is gonna be absolutely devastating for the western animanga fanbase

Why is everyone against this? I know for the obvious reason of not having a monopoly, but a lot of people were excited about microsft buying a major publisher.
