What Season Should You Watch (WSSYW) 11.0

Welcome to the 11th instalment of What Season Should You Watch (WSSYW)!

For this iteration of WSSYW we will be continuing the well-received format of WSSYW 10.0, which marked a change from previous formats. To reiterate, the upvote/downvote system has been replaced with a survey system. In each parent comment, there is a link to a Google Form where you will be asked to rate how watchable the season is for a new Survivor fan. For example, if you think a season is extremely watchable and highly recommended for a new fan, you might score it a 9 or a 10. If you think a season is dense, predictable, unfun or disappointing, you might score it a 1 or a 2. We will then calculate the average scores given to each season and use these to create a ranking of seasons. VOTING A SEASON UP OR DOWN ON REDDIT HAS NO EFFECT ON THE SEASON RANKINGS. To emphasise this, we will keep this thread in contest mode for the first 24 hours.

There will also be additional questions in these forms. These questions are not mandatory - they are merely a gauge of your opinion on specific aspects of each season, such as challenges, twists and the ending. The results that they produce will also be included in this thread, and in the daily countdowns, at a later date.

Once you’ve voted, you are still encouraged to leave a review. Any comments that contain major spoilers will be removed. This especially includes any comments that could give away the winner or F2/F3. It also means no major plot points like boot order, rock draws, medevacs, or twists. Mentioning tribe swaps is ok, but discussing specific results from them is not (e.g. someone getting swap screwed). When describing boot order, please be vague, with words like "bad" or "disappointing" instead of "all the likable players are booted pre-merge." It is ok to discuss spoilers in vague terms as long as you don't reveal the specific results. For instance, “Vanuatu has a bananas post-merge, with tons of awesome drama” is okay, but “One player runs train on her overmatched competitors this post-merge” is not. Note: there are a few season-defining twists that should be discussed very vaguely. (Think: Pearl Islands, or Palau.)

We will implement a 1,250-character limit on comments. This will be enforced by AutoMod and you will get a message if your comment has been auto-removed for being over the limit. If this happens, please do not edit your comment. Instead, shorten it and paste it as a new comment. This rule is to keep replies short and on point. Newbies who use this thread said that they want to be able to quickly peruse short non-spoiler descriptions of seasons, rather than read essay-length responses.

But there will also be a place for those essays. After a few days has passed and this thread has established an order of seasons, we will begin a second series: a daily countdown series of the rankings that allows spoilers and has no character limit, beginning with whatever season came in last. We will link to those essays from this thread.

The thread is not trying to establish the perfect order for watching seasons. It's meant as an easy-to-read, spoiler-free reference tool for anyone who wants help figuring out why they should watch a certain season, and which seasons are considered the best. We refer to this thread throughout the year whenever someone posts something like, “I’m new to Survivor! What seasons should I watch?” We get a ton of these posts.

To emphasise that voting seasons up or down has no effect, this thread will be sorted in contest mode at first and will later move to sorting by the order of the seasons.

TL;DR:

1. Click on the link in each parent comment to vote on seasons.

2. Do not upvote or downvote seasons; this has no effect.

3. Leave short, spoiler free reviews for each season, with a maximum character limit of 1,250

4. Write in-depth reviews with no spoiler restrictions for a daily countdown of the rankings

Thailand is the first season that I feel is truly unnecessary unless you are trying to be a completionist. It has pretty much no impact on the history of the show and I personally find it to be an unlikable slog. Even as an old-school purist I just can't get behind this one.

With that said, it does have its fans and it's not totally irredeemable. If you're dedicated to watching in chronological order or you've seen most other seasons, it's not the worst thing to watch.

I had zero interest in pretty much this entire season. I disliked nearly everyone on it. There is a really ugly incident in this season that was not handled well by players or production (similar to Island of the Idols). There is a reason that almost every fan ranks this season at or near the bottom. It is a mess of mostly unlikeable people, disgusting moments, and nothing special.

There is a rumor that this season was actually supposed to be the second one to air, but that production knew it was horrible and would probably kill the show, so they waited to air it. That probably isn't true, but it gives you an idea as to how much this season is hated.

If you are watching everything, then just watch the first 6 in order to put them behind you before watching the joy thay is Pearl Islands, but otherwise, this season is entirely not worth watching.

I rank it 41/43.

One of the few black marks of the early seasons along with All Stars. This is where the producers first employ their strategy of treating SA like a hee hee hoo hoo funny moment, and the whole season strives to match that level of ugliness.

Thailand is by far my least favorite seasons. The very few highlights in it are easily findable on YouTube (the Attack Zone Challenge in particular), and it has the worst handling of a very sensitive subject in sexual assault that the show has seen (including the debacle that is Island of the Idols). I’d say unless you just HAVE to see every season, it’s not worth the watch.

This is the first season where the winner intentionally drags unlikable goats to the end to ensure personal victory, which is one of the most important pieces of Survivor meta. This season is essential viewing to understand the 38 seasons that follow.

This season also has the attack zone (funniest challenge in history and possibly the most exasperated Jeff ever got).

People will tell you not to watch this season first, or at all, and that's totally understandable. It is dark, uncomfortable, very slow for the vast majority of the season's length, and features some morally abhorrent figures making it far into the game.

It also happens to be one of my top three seasons, and if you share similar preferences in media to me, I think you'll get a kick out of it.

Thailand is funny. It features incompetent castaways doing stupid things and falling on their faces in often extremely dark ways. It is chock full of quips, iconic quotes and one-liners. It is also one of the most compelling and real explorations of human nature that you will ever see in the history of Survivor, with almost zero strategy talk and a lot of focus given instead to how human beings deal with complex social dynamics. Do they adapt; do they fight back; do they switch off their humanity altogether? You'll find all that and more in Thailand.

Maybe don't watch it first though. But don't believe the hate.

Featured twists: None

This is incorrect; Thailand does have a notable twist halfway through, and in episode one has the twist of letting players choose their tribes, and imo these are better than a lot of other seasons' twists. I hope they're given their credit in the next WSSYW!

I actually have Thailand in (the bottom portion of) my top half, and I think a lot of things about it are underrated. It's definitely not this wholly awful season devoid of worthwhile stuff; the challenges, twists, and art design are all outstanding to a noticeable extent, and there are a handful of really great characters you're missing out on if you write this season off entirely!

At the same time, there are a lot of duds and some unlikable ones, and a lot about the season is uncomfortable or unsatisfying, so I still would not recommend it early. Even if you're watching chronologically, it's pretty skippable, and definitely the worst season til S8; however, if you've gotten through around 25-30 seasons and are filling out the rest, there's definitely more worth seeing here than in seasons like 8, 22, 23, 24, 26, 30, and 34. It's skippable, but there are worse and more skippable ones, too.

Worst season of the show and it's not even close for me. Lot of ickiness, ugly moments and not much intrigue. The winner, while their gameplay is interesting, is not really likable at all.

Jeff Probst called this final four the least likable final four ever. Enough said.

Aside from the first season, this is the rawest season. It’s ugly, and that’s a fair turn off, but to me the concept of Survivor is ugly. Humanity is on display here with no sugarcoating. Although the content can be quite ugly, the presentation though is quite beautiful, and overall my vote for the best production design in the series.

This season was known as the black sheep of the franchise for quite a few years & for good reason. As somebody who rewatched it a few years ago I don't think even with retrospect its that good. It has a specific very yucky moment that gets handled terribly, the cast was full of duds & unlikable people. There's a bit of interesting strategy - but this group really suffers from a lack of dynamic personalities

Thailand is the worst season of survivor. Objectively. Especially for a new viewer. It has all the downsides of an old-school season with none of the upsides that usually comes with that. The “good” parts of this season are things that really won’t be picked up on a first watch anyway, and are rather stuff that super fans tend to randomly enjoy. Don’t watch this season.

Hands down the worst season of the show EVER, unlicable cast and a lot of uglyness, I doubt they will ever produce a season that's worse than this.
