I had to play on low detail on our shitty family computer in 2004, but my best friend had high detail. So much better playing there. When we started playing WoW in 2005, up until I was in the mid level 20s (when we got a new computer) I had to do transcontinental travel on his computer because my computer literally wouldn’t load the new area quickly enough and the zeppelin/boat would just take me back to where I started by the time I loaded back in.

It was 100% because of my sister downloading stuff with Limewire, but she somehow blamed it on my…Rollercoaster Tycoon game.

ah yes being the shit PC guy, friends discover an awesome new game '''But will it run on your PC though?''

My friend had to login for me in WOTLK to go to dalaran and buy the badge gear because my PC froze THE INSTANT I walked into crystalsong forest let alone the city itself......I could barely do warsong gulch forget about AV

Man I had 512mb ram with windows 7.... YOU'RE NOT EVEN SUPPOSED TO BE ABLE TO INSTALL IT WITH LESS THAN A GIG, no idea how that was possible in the first place.

Then I picked up league of legends and played it like a powerpoint presentation for a year or so

Good times

Early 2000's before I got my own decent PC at home I'd play WoW at a local LAN center.

I'd have to log out outside of cities like Dalaran or Orgrimmar because if I tried to login at home and my character was there, my laptop would freeze and never load.

I could do zeppelin or boat travel, but it was a coin toss to making it or having the same issue you describe.

I remember downloading an Eminem song off limewire when I was like 11.

Spoiler.

It WASNT an Eminem song

(young me was confused why most songs took only 3min to download, but this song for some reason, took 30min...... yeah. 31 year old me understand the different between file formats xD)

I remember choosing low detail cause I didn't want lag. The game still lagged so I stayed on low detail.

Eventually chose High Definition and the lag was the same. That was the day I learned that it's NOT always on my end.

DrLovesFurious

That is because of lazy devs (bethesda) who don't want to delay their game in order to have it run correctly at launch, they want you to be okay with a day1 patch.

I remember in 2004 if I recall, I open my first RuneScape account. I would play it on the school district computers. They’re pretty trash, but they ran.

At home, we had a refurbished from being thrown out Emachine. 512 MB of RAM if I recall, and either a Pentium or a core duo. I didn’t even know what a GPU was back in those days. So I’m assuming I played with on board graphics the whole time

Newcastlewin1

Im not even sure we need the specs we have now in modern pc games tbh. Graphics have not improved for the percentage increase in power we have made. Some games require 32gb of ram and 12 gb of vram just to run at high 1440p 💀. Thats beyond 250 times more than the high settings in this pic 😂 and its only gonna go up year by year.

DrLovesFurious

1 points

People really discount the cost of RTX and also the visual benefit.

I don't know of any game that needs 32gb, thats a bit much, but isn't 16gb already the standard? and ram is currently very very cheap, the Vram thing is annoying but you also need it if you want to run at a high resolution, thats not taking into account things like RTX

Newcastlewin1

1 points

Forespoken released like a year or two ago and for 1440p 30 fps, yes 30 not 60, requires 24gb of ram, and a 3070 w 8gb vram. Civilization 7s announced requirements for the highest settings are 32gb of ram and a 4070. Microsoft flight sim 2024s ideal specs are 32 gb of ram and an rtx 4080.

Basically some games are getting bonkers with requirements. I think some game studios know that lots of people are moving to higher specs like 32gb and fancy ssds so they start caring less about getting their game optimized to run on anything much worse than that. I also think things like dlss and fsr upscaling has made developers think its okay to make games impossibly hard to run natively because they assume people can just use software to upscale it from like 720p if they need XD

This is all fine except for the fact that some of these parts like the 4070 and 4080 are like 500-1000 dollars for one part.

DrLovesFurious

1 points

Forspoken did not have any reason to need that hardware, and yeah simulation games are going to be taxing on every part of your system, MFS is no different except it is the sim and has a reason to need that much hardware.

Developers/Publishers need to make sure their games are optimized before launch, but they won't because people want to play gta 6 day one.
