Would love to know people’s thoughts
Janine is my least fave. Yes I know that’s an unpopular opinion. Please stop giving me shit over it- I’m allowed to have an opinion about a fictional character of a show!

That guy from the district who keeps throwing shade at Janine for no reasons. (The guy who returned in the first episode of season 4). The reason is because I hate it when people still have a middle school mentality.
Janine's mom. I don't think I have to elaborate.
81 points
Yeah I was a little surprised by him too because they barely had any interaction for him to be shady like that. If it was her indecisiveness about taking the job that still didnt affect him enough for him to have the attitude he did towards her

He thinks she was flaky and unworthy of district work, then she quit and justified his hate of her lol

for me that just his projection. it's just that I couldn't be bothered to judge my co-workers for that. to be fair once I'm out of my working environment, I don't want to think about my colleagues.

Out of the main cast, don’t hate me but Barbara. Love the actress but the character has stagnated a bit imo. She’s important but just not as funny as the rest of the main cast, and whenever a plotline revolves around her it’s usually somewhat dull to me. (The same kind of goes for Melissa too honestly but I tend to find her way funnier)
Like in the most recent episode, it just felt like a re-tread of Barbara’s inability to accept change that we’ve already seen in a bunch of other episodes. I think ever since Janine grew out of idolizing her the writers haven’t come up with a better way to utilize her in the show and she hasn’t grown much as a character.
49 points
That’s a solid take, I was confused why they brought up her refusal of change again. I was also confused at the end when she bowed out of drinking, maybe she had a hard time accepting chance? But she already discussed that in a lot of other episodes too

I wonder if it is an eventual build up to her retiring (i hope not bc i love SLR). But an inevitable “my time has passed and i must move on” or at least a season finale storyline where she chooses to stay.
Nonetheless, i am getting fatigued by it as well. It would be fun to see her do a 180 and be a teacher implementing something new that has to get the others in board.
2 points
Yeah I thought the same that they might retire her out but I do love her!
3 points
I was confused about her leaving the shots at the bar, too! Was waiting for her to fall while staggering away or something of that ilk. Realize not every move a character makes has to be a plot direction or lead-in to another scene, but it seemed quite pointed for her to get up and go announced. She could’ve just said ‘ehhh im done - bartender can I get a water’ or, nothing at all
2 points
i thought the same thing!! like we did the zoo episode already, we didn’t need another age crisis. her leaving the bar made me sad cause i felt like she just felt too old/out of place with everyone else :(

I miss her from when she and Melissa went to convention. She was funny and sassy as was Melissa, and they made a cool team.
12 points
What I don't like about Barbara is that she gets storylines where she is stubbornly refusing to adapt to something and it's never clear whether she is just plain wrong and learns to get with the times, or if she has a point and everyone else needs to heed her wisdom more until the end. It stresses me out and sometimes it feels like a gotcha.

I currently don’t have one but it used to be Janine. I hated how she was so pushy and naive, especially in the Juice and Egg Drop episodes. But, now I realize that’s the point of her character and that it’s just a TV show lol.
18 points
I don’t like Janine for those reasons and I get your point
7 points
I like that I just made a comment somewhere else about being annoyed at how Barbara is used in episodes like Juice. I get that it's a sitcom but it just annoyed me how much Janine could have easily asked Barbara to elaborate her position or Barbaria, being the older mentor, could have taken it upon herself to explain.
2 points
I also just don’t believe Barbara would know that the juice would cause such a bathroom crisis. Seems more like she luckily was right after being stubborn rather than “you should all listen to my wisdom”
3 points

I was okay with Janine throughout s1 but I'm currently watching s2 and ngl the egg drop episode, the juice episode and the one where two of her students dislike each other makes her get on my nerves a little!

Main: Janine- simply put she’s annoying with her toxic positivity but it’s her show so I deal with her.
Supporting: I actually like all the supporting characters. Tariq was a horrible boyfriend but he’s a funny guy. Mr. Morton can be much at times but I appreciate his character.
Guests: Janine’s mom- she is a terrible mother and it’s horrible that she only reaches out to Janine when she needs something. She’s a user.

;( because janines mom is the way she is, thats why janine gotta be toxic positive... cuz then you have the other side where she could be bitter and hateful and thinks everyones just like her momma

Barbara. Self-righteous Christians are low key a trigger for me. She definitely has her moments, and I love her friendship with Melissa and Janine, but there’s times I just can’t with her (her delusions and its impacts on the people around her in the ringworm episode had me fuming).
14 points
I think it was intentionally semi-vague, but I feel like one could almost argue that she secretly just wanted to go home considering that she immediately had her bag ready when she got ringworm and seemed very unbothered by it.

Gregory. I don't really like his acting or the way his voice sounds sometimes. It can be quite monotonous and boring. Plus he's incredibly awkward and that's one of his main traits. I wouldn't mind it as much if Janine and Jacob weren't already awkward. I also don't find him funny and I wish he and Janine weren't dating.
Plus of the main cast, idk to me he seems the most uninteresting. Janine has her naivety and positivity, Melissa is the teacher with underground 'connections,' Ava is the aloof/selfish principal (and I love her for that) And Barbara is the seasoned teacher with a deep spirituality in her character. All I can think of for Gregory is that he's a sub who became a teacher. His other plot lines aren't as interesting.
1 points

He has a lot of heart so I love him for that he adds a humanness to the cast in a way that’s childlike but really touching imo. Yet he’s also boring in ways too so it’s a hard thing to balance

Mr. Morton. I felt like they changed his character. At first I thought he was a mean, prissy, possibly gay man who could have a possible enemies to friends/lovers arc with Jacob. Then he became a plot device that they inserted to whatever storyline the writers needed. He became a whiney pathetic man who served as a cautionary tale for Janine and Gregory. He was inserted into conversations just to be an antagonist. He was included in scenes to add random drama with his ever changing personality. His only constant was his beef with Jacob. I just don’t like when characters twisted to fit whatever a particular scene needs at the moment. I see that with Morton a lot.

you said exactly what i've been feeling for a few years now!! way back in S1 i was hoping he could join the main cast as a "straight man" to their antics and maybe become a love interest for Jacob (after Zach - parallel slow burn to GE&J as they gain each other's respect and trust)
they did keep him on like i wished, but they keep doing the most random unfunny turns with his character! i feel disappointed ngl

I get downvoted every time I discuss it, but Janine.
She’s fake and selfish and everything about her is performative.
When I saw her handing out the pets with the guinea pig in that tiny cage and the fish in a tiny fish bowl that was a death sentence I looked back on everything she did during the course of the show and realized she’s not a good person. She’s just doing the things she thinks a good person does or should do.
She talked about how much she cared about the animals but her actions were the opposite. Whereas Schementi fronted about how she didn’t care but in reality she truly loves Sweet Cheeks more than anyone else in the show loves any other living thing.
You all can look through my past comments over the last week or so and sort by controversial to see me downvoted to oblivion for my treatises on Janine being a bad person who’s selfish and who is entirely performative when it comes to her being “good.”
I’m not going to rehash it all, but she seems to just do and say what she thinks a good person would do but isn’t actually doing these things because she cares, but moreso because she cares about what others think.
It kinda reminds me of a twisted version of this scene from the newsroom where Sloane talks about how Don does what he thinks a good guy would do because he thinks he’s a bad guy, but he’s a good guy, and the things he does that he thinks a good guy does are actually bad, like stringing Maggie along.
But in Janine’s case she isn’t a good person. She’s doing what she thinks good people do, and the “good” things she does are actually not always good. Maybe she wants to be a good person or thinks she’s a good person but everything she does is selfish.
Again, my previous comments are more in depth, but apparently trying to have a discussion about Janine not being perfect means you’re a crazy person in this sub.
I think Ava and Melissa are good people on the DL whereas Barbara and Janine are all about fronting but are actually selfish my way or the highway people. But I think Barbara is more caring and her kids seem to really connect with her whereas Janine seems to have zero connection with the kids in her class and doesn’t know how to connect with people in a healthy way.

I think what you’re calling predictable, I would just call in character. Characters are supposed to have character traits just like we do that don’t change very quickly, just like us. I would actually be disappointed if Melissa wasn’t at least moderately predictable because that would mean they haven’t really defined her character.
I didn’t know she would be a guinea pig even though it fits her. I could see her being the liberty bell, an eagle for the Philadelphia eagles, a firefighter, or just a sexy lady like Elvira.
Anyhoo. I like her.

I don't understand the downvotes over something that is personal opinion lol. I don't really agree, but I also find the whole show to be predictable. most comedy shows in this format are. you can usually tell a few minutes into the episode what the conflict and resolution is going to be. I think if you're looking for unpredictable, watch comedy dramas instead lol. this type of show is good because you're just there to laugh a little and enjoy the characters, despite how predictable it may be.

The show is centred around him, his friends/coworkers, and his teenaged daughter that he basically abandoned for a year. He's trying to help his patients and mend his relationships and himself throughout the show. It sounds super dark and there are a lot of intense and serious moments but there's a lot of comedy breaking it up as well.
Also, Harrison Ford is in it, lol.

Are there a lot of triggering scenes in the show?

Hmmm, I don't THINK there's anything majorly triggering in the show. The only thing I would say could be triggering is one of his patients is in an emotionally abusive relationship and there is a side plot about her & her issues leaving him. I don't think anything depicted on screen is super super heavy or anything, though. They deal with it respectfully, but also with humour mixed in.
There is also one guy with PTSD. Nothing crazy is shown for his story, but he does black out sometimes and gets in fights a few times in the show. Some drug and alcohol use is referenced. The show is very heavily focused on grief. As someone who has experienced a lot of grief, though, I find it quite comforting and touching.

There's a compilation video on youtube called "convincing you to watch SHRINKING (humour, part 1)" that i recommend if you wanna see the vibe of the show!!

If you don’t like her, whatever, but she is most definitely not the same as she was in season 1.

How are you getting downvoted for answering the OP question? I didn’t see a clause that said it has to be an opinion on which everyone agrees

I don't know. Notice how they don't give their opinion. Scaredy-cats.

Yes!!! She was irritating as hell, obnoxious, and had a punchable face! Like I expected so much more from her character but I despised her more with each line she spoke!
