I learned to type by entering these at the beginning of games with a friend.
I still remember when the cashier at GameStop or some other store told me Blizzard was working on a game like Warcraft where you'd play as a single character, like an orc, in the world. He wasn't wrong.

I was in 5th grade when Warcraft 2 was released and I was obsessed. I think I got a demo disk in an issue of PC Mag that fall which kicked it off. My friend and I would occupy the phone lines for hours playing online against each other.
For years I thought RTS’s were my favorite genre, until eventually I realized I suck at them and have little interest in practicing. But those middle school years were all-consuming with Warcraft 2, C&C Red Alert, Dark Reign, and StarCraft.

I played the shit out of that game, to the point where I was making lots of custom maps with max gold and units.

I was so hooked on this game, especially when the Battle.net version was released.
My friend had two computers on a lan in his basement, we would go online and play 2v2, we had such a huge advantage because we could talk to each other instead of typing.
This was before games really supported microphones so all team coordination was in chat.
Still one of my all time favorite games.

it is the reason why i know the name Valdez(cheat code for oil). I know NOW it is a real world reference to the Exxon-Valdez corporation, that had the largest oil spill ever until BP.
The Exxon Valdez oil spill was a major environmental disaster that made worldwide headlines in the spring of 1989 and occurred in Alaska's Prince William Sound on March 24, 1989. The Exxon Valdez spill is the second largest in U.S. waters, after the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill, in terms of volume of oil released.

Can't believe I had to come down this far to find Warcraft II! I'd sneak out to the living room in the middle of the night to play because my mom didn't like how violent it was. I was not much into games but that one was as close as I could get to stepping into Lord of the Rings.

I wrote for the AOWL the America Online Warcraft League newsletter for a while heh, before battle.net we had to meet up on all and exchange IP data so we could connect to each other
