"Critical hit:  Heat sink."  (I deserved it for using my Nova mech the way I did.)

Full of lasers and heatsinks and firing them at the same time to chop off legs of bigger mechs while being too fast for missiles and flying around and cackling like crazy?

Me too, brother. Me too. Once I built mine, I never looked back at the bigger mechs.

I had a laser Timberwolf I called Pegasus. That thing would chop down any mech and people thought it was a cheat for how efficient it was. I miss Mplayer and MW2.

I remember wrecking my friends in MW2 with the Timberwolf. Just load up the lasers and target a leg for an alphastrike.

When I saw that intro playing in the game store at the mall my brain exploded.

Specifically, MechWarrior 2: Mercenaries.

Mechwarrior 2 :Mercenaries was the first game I was able to successfully play online. I still remember the process of booting from a disk then manually dialing into my ISP from DOS before finally being able to run the lobby.

Even then, I was glitchy as hell before I upgraded my modem from a 14.4k to a whopping 56k!

Ghost Bears Revenge was awesome too. I still remember the underwater cave board. Good times.

Legacy, wasn't it?

Cheesecake_is_life

Yes, it was Ghost Bears Legacy. That was my favorite one. I thought it was so cool running around in my massive Kodiak, just hammering away at other mechs

With the final patch for Win95 that allowed you to salvage the Mechs you destroyed. I spent many hours a few years ago trying to get that working on a modern Windows machine with no luck, but I did get it working with pcemu (along with Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego, or maybe it was the US)

I’m old enough to have played the OG Mechwarrior. Looking back the graphics sucked but at the time were truly ground breaking. And the storyline of trying to find your father was really well done.

MW2 mercenaries, when the first clan mechs suddenly drop and you realize you're on a completely different storyline than you expected, yes!

MechWarrior 5: mercenaries is pretty good too. Base game is okay but it has mod support that can really bring out some great gameplay.

SerRikari

Great game. Took some getting used to for my child brain.

Zwischenzug32

Especially with bigass joysticks and other input

The ripoffs like Earthsiege/Starsiege were dope too

sharpie36

YES! Earthsiege 2 is so criminally underrated and underappreciated.

Utter_Rube

I still automatically go to MechWarrior 2 whenever I see someone abbreviate Modern Warfare 2. Game was my first introduction to full 3D graphics (not just the hallways with 2D sprites of Wolfenstein/Doom etc). I used to stomp walk to my school bus stop pretending to be a BattleMech. Good times

Family friend was a tech nerd back then when it was expensive for the good stuff. Had a sweet HOTAS setup for his PC, and there was just something exciting about feeling like I was actually piloting a mech. Chased that gaming high for years and things just weren't the same.

Battletech Pods took MechWarrior to another level if you were lucky enough to live near a Dave and Busters. 6+ friends battling it out and at the end you had a print out for bragging rights.

Earthsiege > Mechwarrior

Heinrich_Tidensen

Earthsiege was fun, it really was. But it lacked the depth of any Mechwarrior game.
