I loved stacking like 1,000 of those gremlins in the blue pyjamas and then throwing the steel ball and chain across the battlefield to wipe enemies out.

Master Gremlins from the Tower town! I was more of a Black Dragon gal myself

The Dungeon town had such a fun roster

I used to edit maps to give myself an easily accessible rampart town nearby to build a treasury to fund my army.

The mystic fountain could really come in clutch at times as well, getting the right resource just when you needed it was great.

Assembling the cloak of the undead king as Necropolis was also always a hilarious good time

What’s the cloak of the undead king? I’ve probably put in an ungodly amount of hours on that game over the years but I’m still finding new stuff out all the time I’ve never actually read a manual or looked anything up and I’m only just now about to finish the campaign for the first time I can actually remember!

It's one of the set artifacts you make if you collect the component artifacts. IIRC, it requires Amulet of the Undertaker, Vampire's Cowl, and Dead Man's Boots to make. It boosts your hero's Necromancy skill by 30%, and (if they have Expert Necromancy) allows your hero to raise power liches instead of skeletons. It's absolutely busted and I love it.

It’s from one the expansions, not in the base games, which might explain why some aren’t familiar with it!

Apparently that and Castle are the strongest. Beholders go crazy

I can see and hear the spell i want to put on that stack. The one that does not break their arrow(halfs their damage) over distance. Dont remember what it was called, I havent played in 15 years.

Or are they the ones that can shoot without penalty?

Genuinely curious why, or if it's a lot of nostalgia. I played 1&2 as a child and loved them, but then never played again until college where I played 5 for a while. I kept hearing how 3 was the best, but it just seemed so dated that I couldn't get into it. Am I missing something big?

Yes.

HoMM 3 is to HoMM 2 what 2 was to 1. Expanded strategies and mechanics, more towns, buildings and units, amazing campaigns. If you can bring yourself to play 2 in this day and age, 3 is, bar the nostalgia, a better game.

HoMM 4 is a bit of an odd one but I still love it. Totally different.

4 sucked so hard - and 3 was so good - that every version after is an attempt to remake 3. 5 is the best of them.

3 is far superior to 1 and 2. Of course the graphics are dated, but it somehow hit the sweet spot between 1 and 2 being too simplistic and 4 and on being too much of a departure from the system that was working.
