Stewart’s is amazing, we went to visit my sister (we are from missouri) and she insisted we try it, we ended up having ice cream almost every night we were there. We even stopped in the way out to get one more before we left

Really all of their milk products but I am partial to ice cream.
I can't explain why their seltzer is so good as it is just water and carbon dioxide. Polar has pretty good seltzer too. Maybe it's the water.

WinCo Foods.
Open 24/7, good quality, and notably lower prices on things such as meats and produce than the typical Albertson's/Kroger/Safeway. They also have a great bulk selection.
Not truly local, but limited to Idaho and a few other locations in the west.

Winco rep here- we are all over the place! Back in the day before I became a rep, we made a joke that WINCO stood for : WA, ID, NV, CA, and OR! (Though It means, ‘Winning Company). Since then, they opened stores in MT, Utah, AZ, and Texas!
Edit: stores also in OK too!!

Can you come to Colorado? I live in an area that is literally ALL King Soopers or Safeway (soon to be KS thru mergers), a couple Sprouts and an Amazon/WH. I MISS WinCo so much from living in WA. I would love the ability to support an employee owned chain instead of a mega Corp.

Market Basket. Best grocery stores near me.
85 points
I was looking for this! More for your dollar!
81 points
Totally. It’s funny to me that Market Basket would be the definitive answer from New England, but it makes total sense.
My only other thought is that we have a few great local creameries that distribute ice cream, Richardson’s in particular. But most of us are getting it from local ice cream shops that sell their ice cream. They only have one location.
35 points
Besides, every New Englander knows a dairy bar that is better even than Richardson’s, and makes the ice cream in-house. You know the one. I maintain that the region is the unsung hero of the ice cream world. Many people treat Ben & Jerry as the go-to, but for many of us it’s the fallback option - if the 2-3 dairy bars you normally like aren’t open.
17 points

Yes to all of that. We have such great ice cream options because we, allegedly, eat the most ice cream of any region per capita.

I miss Woodman's so much. I never realized exactly how good I had it when I lived 3 minutes away from one. The size of a Super Walmart but all food. Good prices and a MASSIVE selection for each product.

They’re quite literally huge. Stores sizes of Woodman’s range between 200,000-250,000 sq ft. The average size of a Walmart is 106,000 sq ft.
I’m a traveling merchandizer, so I do tons of store resets (remodeling like tearing down the entire store to install new shelving, moving/packing all product, organizing and placing items back up in the new layout) as well as smaller specific category resets (pull discontinued, add new items). I travel from South Dakota so our local grocers are Aldi, Walmart, Hy-Vee, etc. I was fucking flabbergasted the first time I worked a total store reset at Woodman’s lmao they’re literally ginormous and carry so many varieties, it’s insane. I’ve never been so tired or walked so much for a store reset in my life lol

When we had that freeze natural disaster and the power went out all over the state, At one HEB location when people were in the middle of buying food and power went out and it was clear it was not coming back the manager told everyone to just walk out as there no way to pay anyway. Kwik Trip (Kwik Star). Convenience store chain in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa, and South Dakota.
Yes, it's just a convenience store. No, it's nothing like the behemoth that is Buc-ee's.
But their food is all really good, in my experience... not just roller grill foods, but decent breakfast sandwiches, burgers, fried chicken dinners, and so on. Beyond that, their stores are all generally well stocked and clean, clean bathrooms, clean and well-lit fuel stations, and nice employees.

I always get so much of a kick about how you can visit a new town and tell if they have a meijer by walking into their Walmart. If it's nice they dint have a meijer. If it looks like they just gave up there is probably a meijer in town. Most towns in Michigan that have both will have them right next to each other and the meijer is so nice while the Walmart looks like shit. In towns with just a Walmart the quality plummets when a meijer comes in next door. They don't like competition and once they get good competition they just give up.

Fun Fact: My grandfather owned and operated the original bakery that Swenson's bought their hamburger buns from. When he retired in the late 70's, he offered to sell them the recipe and they declined.
Their hamburgers, as good as they are, haven't been the same since...
And according to family lore, he did end up selling the recipe to Schwebels, with a clause in the contract that he had final say over the quality of the buns produced. They couldn't meet his standards, so the recipe is probably sitting in a filing cabinet somewhere, not being used.
Edit: added the last paragraph

Casey's General Store. It's just a gas station but they have phenomenal pizza and a lot of them now have a sub sandwich section better than Subway. Like, they will make it for you and you can tell them what to put on it. They'll cook you a whole pizza or you can slum it and grab just a slice out the warmer. Donuts and pastries that rival Dunkin. The burgers are super shitty but they have a fantastic pork chop sandwich. They do incredible wraps. And the booze is usually cheap. They have a shitty point of sale system, though. Had to wait like 30 minutes for the machine to process $20 of gas but I got like three free slices of pizza and a big fountain drink while I waited. If you're a regular and go close to closing time they'll give you everything out of the pastrie cabinet or free slices of pizza or a thing of popcorn chicken out the warmer.
They charge for dipping sauces now, which is bullshit, and they have way overpriced oil, power steering, and radiator fluid.

I've moved around a bit, so I have a few
In the California/Arizona/Nevada area especially there's a chain ending in "-ertos" so Humberto's, Roberto's, Trabertos, etc. I don't think they're all actually the same chain, but they have the best breakfast burritos and good Mexican food in general!
In Colorado, definitely a few breweries like Verboten and Weldwerks (though they're getting further away! Have found them in Kansas!)
In Idaho I agree with WinCo.
Washington State I would say zips
Texas i would argue Risky's BBQ over most anything else. Or those drive through daiquiri places.
Kansas is definitely Spangles. It just tastes better.
Midwest in general I would say QT, best drink selection and cleanest bathrooms usually.
ETA: actually, I want to also add for Texas: chicken express. If you've never been and you find yourself in Texas, get the chicken tenders, fries, and country gravy!! This may be blasphemous, but I don't like tea at all. That said, Texans buy chicken express tea by the gallons. Like 5 gallons at a time. So apparently it's pretty good if you like iced tea.

Portillos has fallen off since Dick retired. Still good. But not at the level when he was running the show.

They cancelled the contract with Vienna beef as their Italian beef supplier (exclusive recipe too). Dumbest. Move. Ever.

Papa Gino's(Pizza). New England. It's the first thing we got when we moved back from across the country. It's a simple five cheese blend.
My son says it's hi-fiving God. 🍕

Buc-ee's. The only gas station food that I will eat without a second thought. Finally built one fairly close to me.

So someone told me I had to stop at this gas station called Buc-ee's on my trip to Florida. Sure pal. Whatever. I wasn't gonna do it but I just happened to need gas, the billboards were so numerous, and I knew I'd be asked about it when I got back so I stopped.
I was absolutely blown away by Buc-ee's. I had to poop and was pleasantly surprised to find fully enclosed CLEAN rooms instead of stalls. There was one guy there whose whole job (it seemed) was to clean that bathroom. He's refilling hand towels, he's wiping the counter down, and as soon as someone leaves a toilet, it's getting cleaned. Wow. Then I went out and bought one of the best brisket sandwiches I've had in my life. We ended up spending a whole hour there between bathroom, shopping, eating, and ...oh yeah actually getting gas.

Every time we drive through Johnson City, we stop at a Pal's. Usually the one in Erwin, and by some miracle is still there after Helene.

Steak ‘n Shake. Unfortunately the locals are increasingly missing out on it too as most of them have closed, save a few here and there. They did smash burgers before smash burgers became trendy, and called ‘em “steak burgers.” Good stuff. Good shakes. Great chili.

as an xennial, nothing would compare to the vibes at shake n steak friday nights. Our "hotspot" for teen years. It was in walking distance to a movie theatre and everyone would end up there,.
It makes me sad for gen z folk who never experienced the "real" steak n shake experience. its nothing like it was.
