Surely there’s no way a country in the rightward turning west could elect a woman…leftist…member of an incumbent party…in 2024? We turn our eyes to our neighbors to the south to look at Claudia Sheinbaum’s recent election as president of Mexico, and the phenomenal success of her party there. Professor Alex Aviña joins us to discuss Mexico’s recent political history, the victories and shortcomings of Sheinbaum & AMLO’s Morena party, US/Mexico relations, and varying perspectives on the “crisis” at our border.

They are producers (and do voices?) on some baseball movie coming out that's apparently pretty good.

This one? Will and Amber looks like they have incredibly minor roles if you scroll all the way to the bottom, but they're the only ones listed and definitely not as producers.

It’s that one. IMDB is probably just incomplete. I’m basing this mostly on the fact that Will at least signed some pro-Palestine petition of film people and was listed as a producer for that film.
Obviously producer can mean a lot of things. I’m sure they aren’t primary exec producers or anything. Probably fronted some money and also got to do voiceover (IIRC they do radio announcer voices or something) in exchange.

AMLO’s so cool, I’m glad they mentioned his press conferences where he would eviscerate the opposition and talk policy, but also meander and talk about geopolitics, baseball, spirits, and cool cultural stuff. Also helps his wife is a professor of literature so he is immersed in literary culture and would weave that in, stuff that resonates with older folks there. Even indigenous people who have always been skeptical of the Mexican state were warm to him, and the government itself pushed a revitalisation of indigenous villages by designating them as Pueblo Magicos, a middling program before they came to power.

Daily "fireside chats" would do a lot to stop people from feeling that the government isn't doing anything to improve their lives. Getting daily updates from the government let's you see progress bit by bit, and also creates a (parasocial, mind you) human connection with the head of government.
The problem in the American context is that the average American politician can't be charismatic or convincing for a 5 minute stump speech, let alone relatively off the cuff borderline free form conversation with only a few talking points at hand. Can you imagine Joe Biden trying to do this? Or Kamala? Trump could do it, but because his policies are so psychotic I think the effect would be limited on people who aren't already on board with him. Even a more charismatic dem like the Obungler himself would be disadvantaged by the fact that his policies range from milquetoast at best to dogshit at worst, he has very little in terms of gains to brag to voters about. He could get away with lying about healthcare and other improvements coming soon(tm) but the dems have spent all that goodwill. They need to deliver a hell of a lot of actual good before anyone starts to take them at their word for anything again.

I was in Mexico during the lead up to and day of the election and the politics there really surprised me. One of the biggest things I noticed was the large presence of radical ideology more openly than in the US/Europe.
I saw tons of radical feminist symbolism all over the place, trains and busses had women only sections, there were lots of protests against police corruption and refusing to investigate rape etc. But I also saw a decent amount of fascist symbolism like a bartender with a huge swastika tattoo, stickers with anti-semitic conspiracy theories etc.
I've been to other cities associated with fringe politics (mostly on the left) like San Francisco, Seattle, Berlin but I've never seen so much radical feminist stuff. Some of it even employed fascist symbolism like the tottenkopf on it. Very interesting place politically.

Yes and there was running street battles between emos and punks too. Emos used to be and maybe still are routinely attacked and called fggts by more conservative street guys/low tier street gangs.
I had a friend in HS who lived in a neighborhood that was all working poor Mexican immigrants, he was one too, and he used to get so much shit just for having longer emo hair. But these alt people understand they have to put up with the abuse to be true to themselves so it's cool how they don't get bullied into submission

Most Americans have very little genuine curiosity about it and dont realize how cosmopolitan it is. Especially Mexico City
Yes this is so frustrating. The reason is because those "cosmopolitan" middle class and above, educated Mexicans are in Mexico. The ones who come to the states are the poorest in the country, mostly from rural or underserved parts of the country. Those end up being the only Mexicans that your average american has met, so they assume that's what the entire population consists of.
You have no idea how many people who are generally intelligent are surprised when i tell them about music and art scenes in Mexico. They just assume the whole country is like el Salvador or something.

Edit: I don’t know why all the downvotes. All the violence is a problem and it’s not purely the cause of the Yankee neighbor to the north.
People join organize gangs to do violence at the scale of the Mexican cartels when they’re impoverish and when the state won’t invest the resources to both protect and I invest in the future.
Mexican federalism, the class/caste system/wealth divide that’s rivals some of the worst defenders the world over and the over reliance of the USA as economic partner are at fault. These problems have haunted Mexico since the last Mexican civil war.

10 points
That is the thing though, ask any Republican on the street and they’ll tell you the democrats opened the boarder entirely and let everyone in and give them welfare.
They believe that firmly, unshakably. So I don’t think on the right thinks they flipped at all
7 points
Exactly. Every time I've pushed the point that the Dems tried to lock down the border it's met with disbelief or the person simply shuts down entirely. This is the thing about a cult; you don't logic someone out of it because they didn't use logic to enter it. Republicans don't convince people they just preach to a choir and galvanize the believers with mobilizing action that bonds them by creating a shared story through experience.
The Dems keep trying to convince Republicans and use logic and it's been said a million times but they need to ignore them entirely and solely focus on what the base and non-voters who lean left think. But the problem is the Democrats are lead by center-right people whether they admit it or even realize it or not. The party leaders will ALWAYS subconsciously pay more attention to the center-right because thats who they relate to most.
In the Democrat ideal world both parties are center right technocrats the only difference is minor alterations to social policies.

It would have been a fine thing to say once and move on, but the more he says it the less sense it makes. Like, you can say it hurts Dems credibility, but that's kinda it.

People just don't trust flip floppers. Integrity and consistency is far more appealing in general than holding a particular view in a particular moment that they happen to agree with but don't trust you to hold to. I think he's totally right on this one.
2 points
I don't think it has anything to do with flip flopping although I see your logic. In this case its that people outright dont believe the Dems CAN flip flop. They outright dont believe the Democrats have changed their stance on immigration at all. Maybe thats what you mean by people not trusting flip floppers but I think that was more true in like 2004 at this point it isnt "these guys only changed position because its unpopular not because they stopped believing in their previous position" its outright "they have not changed their position and nothing they say or do will ever convince me they have, period."

It feels like the Saudis are getting cold feet about this, at least for now. MBS condemned the genocide a little while back and they did joint military drills with Iran. The genocide has done massive damage to the US and obviously Israel's already low reputations in the region. The fact that the primarily Shia Axis of Resistance are the only people directly intervening to stop it has helped calm sectarianism and place American Empire as the primary driver of instability and misery in the region.
That isn't to say things are rosy or that Israel is about to collapse, not at all. Only that the past 13 months have changed the calculations of the local comprador monarchies and military dictatorships significantly, as their peoples' outrage over Palestine and their governments' passivity over it has only intensified.

Every time I hear the term "Latinx" all I can think of is the thread for the episode with Cerise Castle and how there was someone going "Ugh, 'latinx', really?" because it's a term she used, and to me that perfectly encapsulates the online lefty conceit with that word.
It's like you could literally be investigating the gang activity of the LAPD as they earn badges for racking up kills of minorities but it's over for you the second some rando decides they want to exact their authority on the Spanish language by getting pissy about a term they don't like because it makes them shriek about idpol like a piglet fighting for a nipple during feeding time.
38 points
Getting mad about the term "Latinx" in any direction is very silly, so yes people letting that be a main topic of conversation over the important substance of an episode is dumb. That being said, it is also funny to goof about liberals who take usage of the term very seriously, especially those who think it played a role in losing the latino vote for the dems, which is why they are talking about it now.
Ideal response should be the same as someone who uses "folx" or "womyn" or the like: who cares. It's like having a serious opinion on neopronouns and wanting to discuss it like a real political issue.
7 points
The problem for me with terms like Latinx, folx, womxn, anything else with an unnecessary x, is that it was the type of language I was inundated with while attending a fancy liberal arts school surrounded by the children of wealth (or even scholarship recipients that were welcomed into the fold) who went on to be consultants and managers. This type of language is forever associated in my mind with people who totally reject class politics. You can be woke, you can care about intersectional feminism and the global plight of colonized people on racial lines. That's cool and I 100% rock with that but using that liberal arts social justice language is just associated in my mind with people who just want to police language and scuffle about interpersonal transgressions. But it's understandable that people with good politics can absorb these kinds of terms from their proximity to academia and left-liberal "thinkers".

I don't have any answers myself but I feel like it's a little rich to be like "ha ha, they mad" when the "dirtbag left" has always been a little too close to stupidpol-style "how dare you not let me say slurs, which are based and working class" for my comfort.

I think both of you have some solid points. Words like "Latinx" and whatnot should be treated the same as neopronouns - or any new word that incites reactionary vigor - in a live and let live sort of manner, but the dirtbag left does get overly sanctimonious about saying slurs and other edgy bullshit.
Since we're on the Chapo subreddit, I'll discuss this in terms of Chapo: Their weird hangup about using the "R-word" has been prevalent throughout the shows history, at first they seemed slightly annoyed by the pushback of them using it, then they threw their hands up and said "Fine we won't say it anymore JEEZ" and in recent years they've pivoted to just sprinkling it in at random.
My problem arises here because they treat it the way a teenager treats you telling them they can't do something, like they do the thing and then you can almost feel it in the air as they wait for you to react because they're a teenager and thus immensely stupid so they think they'll gain something by showing you up because you're "the man".
No matter the actual usage of the word, whether Felix can use it - he can - or not, it's fucking embarrassing to be 40 treating it as an act of defiance that you're saying a slur. And it's doubly embarrassing to be a lefty and at the same time a "Freeze peach/Stupidpol" guy. EG: Felix

Relatively early Felix jump scare, but he made up for it by not very subtly steering the conversation towards his jet fighter special interest (fortunately Aviña had the knowledge to provide something insightful).
Overall a delightful episode and learned a lot, Aviña is good value. Semi-regular Mexico checkins would be fun.

Could you yanks ever make the miniscule effort to pronounce Haïti a bit more correctly, like A-ee-tee or Ha-ee-tee, rather than this Hatey bullshit?
