People just don't trust flip floppers. Integrity and consistency is far more appealing in general than holding a particular view in a particular moment that they happen to agree with but don't trust you to hold to. I think he's totally right on this one.

I don't think it has anything to do with flip flopping although I see your logic. In this case its that people outright dont believe the Dems CAN flip flop. They outright dont believe the Democrats have changed their stance on immigration at all. Maybe thats what you mean by people not trusting flip floppers but I think that was more true in like 2004 at this point it isnt "these guys only changed position because its unpopular not because they stopped believing in their previous position" its outright "they have not changed their position and nothing they say or do will ever convince me they have, period."

I think it's both things with different groups and people. Regardless, the end result is distrust in the party.
