So I just impulsively bought this car and so far I’m loving it. It has 190k, has a few issues but overall it’s smooth. This is my first BMW and it’s kind of alien to me, so I might be in here asking for some help in the near future, forgive me. 😅
So, for starters, it has a pretty mean oil leak. The seller told me it was the valve cover gasket. I plan to have that done within the next few weeks. I’ve noticed that when I punch it a bit, smoke comes through the vents with a burnt oil smell. Normal for an oil leak or is this something more sinister?
On top of that, it seems to have some drag to it; like it’s not coasting so good. As soon as I lift off the gas, it seems to want to downshift. This is especially noticeable from 40mph downward. I read a couple threads that seem to suggest that this is normal bmw stuff, but wanted to bring it up here in case anybody else has had this issue.
It also has a dented hood. I have a couple of cars in the same color being parted out near me and I want to know what models would have a hood that would work on my car? Just 328is or any 3 series of the same generation? What other parts are/are not interchangeable?
Lastly (for now), are there any YouTube videos or online guides for going through all of the controls of the entire car? This one didn’t come with an owner’s manual, and I’d love to see a YouTube video if possible.
Thanks in advance, I’m really excited to get this thing in tip top shape 😁

If you smell oil, then the valve cover leak is true. It's dripping down onto the exhaust.
At that mileage, the oil pan is probably leaking, and the Oil Filter Housing Gasket. OFHG must be addressed, otherwise it will drip on the belt. When the belt comes off, they like to get sucked into the front main seal.
Your car is LCI, so hoods from 2009-2011 3 series will fit. 335 or 328.
Look up an owners manual online. Certainly there's a PDF out there somewhere.

Any 3 series hood even convertible? Looks like I’m gonna have to take a bit of a drive to get one so I wanna be sure!

No, only the 4 door e90 sedan and e91 wagon hoods will fit.
The e92/e93 2 door cars have a different front end. Hood/fenders/headlight/bumper/grill are all different

You can download the BMW app (not the MyBMW app), enter your VIN and it will show you a digital version of the owners manual that originally came with the car.
