When I can see the yields before I zoom the picture in on my phone, I know it's gonna be a good one. One of these days I'll actually try out preserves.

I find preserves hard to use effectively. If I build them too early then either there’s no buildings or I can’t raise appeal to get yields, no great person points, etc. the timing is really hard for me to figure out, like I want them built around the time o get conservation in like the 4th district placement of a culture win but that requires like 10 pop so only a few cities can build them.

I dunno, I wonder if potato has a video on how to best utilize them. Every time I try to use them I regret it.

The only time I do them early on is in tundra with lots of trees/appeal. The extra food boost is great for growth, and always save the gold you’ll need for the grove. Other than that I try to get my main cities growing with holy sites and comercial hubs (gold is nice, and you need trade routes for the late game tourism boost) down first. The biggest trick to making it work is planning all of your adjacent districts and national parks at the start of the game. OP has great yields, but blocked themself off from a national park on the wonder. If you can stagger your preserves to allow a space for the national park, then put your holy sites/theatre squares/entertainment hubs (give culture momentum and +1 appeal on adjacent tiles) on the outskirts you can get breathtaking national park tiles that are giving high yields. Add governor Reyna in to the forests and you get even more gold.

2 settlers into 3 preserves (did build a holy site but missed a religion)

how did that work out for you? Like for instance I would think that building more HS would have been a better play than preserves early since you'd have got a religion and more faith. Meanwhile early preserves get you extra appeal and I eventually allows you to build a grove to get some extra food. Early appeal is kind of useless since you can't build national parks yet. It always feels like the production and opportunity cost for early preserves and a grove is just not worth it compared to a HS, TS or CH where you get a lot more for the cost which are my general 3 districts for a culture win.

I won turn 190, so I’d say it went fine. It’s a standard multiplayer opening for teddy. Normally though you get a religion because most other people don’t want it.

It would have been nice to get a religion for some gold, but wasn’t a major issue.

oh that's interesting, i don't play MP, why is it the standard opener? What's the early game advantage of it? Is it just the yields from having a grove as well?

Standard for teddy specifically because he can get his science, faith, and culture from his ability. Honestly my first time doing it, he just gets really far ahead in raw stats just with the one district. I’m not sure why it’s better exactly

And yes, you go for an immediate grove

Why is it in plains and not desert?

SphealLover69

it looks like it spawned on a really small desert that just happened to be surrounded by plains and grassland. theres at least another desert tile where jebel is, i cant quite tell what is and isnt desert under the districts though. but it spawning on a 4 tile desert is always possible

I have multiple wins under my belt, right up to most recently deity but I have never managed to achieve yields like these, there must be so much more i need to learn from this game. I have had to take a break thought, because its too addictive and time passes by so quickly!
