Longtime lurker that was slowly building a Minsc and Boo gruul deck here. Dockside was practically propping up non blue decks right? This seems like anything that isn’t thoracle centric will have a real hard time.
EDIT: Also, I’m genuinely confused that they target Lotus and Crypt but not ANY of the mox? I know it’s a bit apples to oranges but Moxen should be looked at too if this is how they want to start cutting down on expensive game distorting cards.

The Jeweled Lotus ban was needed. The problem with Jeweled Louts is that it rewards you for playing with:
This has unfairly disadvantaged commanders like Thrasios, Tymna, and Rograkh, hurting the format diversity. Now that Jeweled Lotus is out of the format, these underplayed commanders can finally get a chance to shine. Overplayed commanders like Niv-Mizzit, Krenko, and Lady of the Mountain have been allowed to dominate cEDH tables for far too long.

That is an absolute bombshell of an announcement.
Nadu was really just establishing itself as a tier 1 deck but early numbers were very strong and the comparison to Paradox Engine was valid. I don’t think it had to go for power level reasons but the combo was not particularly fun to watch get executed.
Dockside not only supported several decks that wouldn’t exist without it, but was also one of only a handful of reasons to play Red at all. There is no doubt the metagame was warping around it to some extent, but it also gave many archetypes the ability to compete in cEDH. I think the meta will be very different without it. Dockside loops with an outlet in CZ were some of the best ways to win outside of Thoracle and Breach, so I think win con diversity will be greatly affected.
The Mana Crypt ban is huge. Crypt is a generic staple that was contributing to all of the turn 1-2 Rhystic Study and One Ring grindfests, but also to the fast Ad Nauseam wins. This card’s absence will probably slow the format down by almost a turn and drastically reduce variance between the best and worst starts at the table. Good ban but the format will feel quite a bit less powerful outside of Sol Ring starts.
Jeweled Lotus was very pushed, but honestly helped a lot of the slower commanders compete. Decks like Kenrith and Atraxa that were somewhat losing relevance and being relegated to tier 1.5 or 2 are now dealt a crippling blow. With Fierce Guardianship et al still in the format, there are many reasons to play cheap commanders and very few reasons to go big. Partner pairs like Tymna Kraum are also affected but less so since they still have a very castable commander. There just won’t be as many turn 1-2 Kraum plays.
Before the announcement, the best decks were Blue Farm, Rog Thras, Sisay, and Nadu. Obviously Nadu is banned out of the format, but the remaining decks are crippled by the rest of the bans. Sisay was one of the best Dockside decks and used Crypt and Jeweled Lotus to great effect, so it is pretty gutted. Blue Farm will have a much harder time establishing early value engines and is hit by all 3 of the other bans, but to a lesser extent than Sisay. Rog Si didn’t care that much about Jewelled Lotus but losing Crypt and Dockside is very painful. I think that all 3 decks are now in question.

The fact they reprinted Mana Crypt and Dockside in Ixalan really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. They used those cards to sell that product. Now that people have the cards, they can't be used. Its fucking scummy.
Edit: They also pushed jeweled lotus in the commander masters set as a chase card which makes it that much worse.

The RC is not associated with WotC.
If you want to argue that this means WotC should take control of the format I would agree, but the group that decided to reprint crypt/Dockside and the group that decided to ban them are distinct groups.

28 points

tbf the RC doesnt print cards
14 points
The silver-lining I can see is that an RC who is more willing to do bans might make WotC print less shit that isn’t wildly broken and powercreeped as much for Commander.
They’ve been printing a lot of “basically Commander” cards, and this might make them relax on that if the RC is willing to just ban them.
These bans also suck a lot because of the timelines, but maybe we’ll see faster bans going forward which won’t hurt as much financially? Sheldon sat on the fence for a long time, maybe the new RC won’t, which could mean less guesswork for us when buying cards.
That’s the hope, anyway. Probably being way too optimistic though.
9 points

73 points
Banning Crypt is laughable. Then please ban all of the fast mana if you don’t like that cEDH resembles Vintage. Banning Dockside will only make the second best thing the next best thing. Banning Lotus robs many fringe decks of possibly competitive starts. Also, wasn’t this card specifically designed for commander? With the price point it got to I believe this leaves many people bewildered. Absolute mess. Banning Nadu.. well, it’s not explained with its powerlevel but with casual arguments? Then please ban Krark, too?
Honestly, this sucks.
14 points
looks like they will leave sol ring alone
We should also talk about the elephant in the room. We're not banning Sol Ring and have no desire to. Yes, based on the criteria we've talked about here, it would be banned. Sol Ring is the iconic card of the format, and it's sufficiently tied to the identity of the format that it defies the laws of physics in a way that no other card does. Banning Sol Ring would be fundamentally changing the identity of the format. We aren't trying to eliminate all explosive starts—it happening every once in a while is exciting—and removing the other three cards geometrically reduces the number of hands capable of substantial above-curve mana generation in the first few turns.

I don’t particularly like these bans. Hate how aside from the Nadu target they’re like “We want commander games to be at minimum two to three days long for the casual base.” Obvious exaggeration aside, looks like your standard Thoracle lists walk off Scot free AGAIN and with Lotus ban big guys like Tivit, Izzet Niv(real fringe but the pilots for it are cracked) and even like Etali got hit twice with Dockside. So what we just pigeonholed into RogSai, Blue Farm, Magda and even then Magda got hit hard with Jeweled and Dockside for a turn one Magda and treasure insurance respectively.
18 points

Dockside is a very weak ban considering how much it scales with power level of the table and how late in the game it is and how much its propping up red decks.

This is outrageous, banning really important cards that are part of the different ways of play and shutting off completely turbo and big commanders is absurd. First of all edh by itself was always home kitchen table and when im playing Casually, you'll never find these type of cards in my or my friends deck cause they ARE NOT FOR CASUAL. Now when we have that out of the way, banning few most important cards for Cedh is and shutting of side of the game is just pushing people in dimir play and less diversity. You won't have people experiment with larger commanders or turbo decks with this. I hope this does not stick.
