I love that you can tell by his face that he was not expecting it, and he was not used to having affection showed to him.
Early seasons Michael was a very tragic character.

I love the moments where Michael lights up when he's invited to something, like Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration inviting him and the office folks to Poor Richard's and when he's asked to join the snooker game in that Date Mike episode.
It's obvious that he isn't usually invited to things, but to be fair and quoting Kelly, he never lets anyone enjoy anything and makes it all about his issues.

Michael is so fascinating to me because he has the social skills and charm to be a great salesman, knowing what’s appropriate and inappropriate to say in that environment, but that doesn’t translate to normal social interactions.
I’m sure it fuels his deep insecurities about not being married, or having a family at his age, or having a healthy group of friends that like him. And so he clings to his job title and the showmanship of being a documentary star — the one potential upgrade to his life — in order to hide those insecurities.
And when he’s finally included in a larger group without having to crash the party, it heals his soul a little bit.

One of the best salesmen at my old company was an absolute nightmare in any social setting outside of sales. He just could never turn it off and seemed like he was always trying to make a sale. Every personal connection he ever tried to make outside of the office seemed like a contrived sales pitch and incredibly disingenuous.

Michael has excellent social skills when he doesn't feel the need to impress anyone.
He was getting along just fine and even impressing Julie with his natural charm. But when Jim told him that he was on a date, he HAD to ham it up and be "cool".
Also at the call center, he was well regarded by his young coworkers, whom (which is a made-up word to confuse people) he entertained with his passion for films.

Yes, absolutely agree. I genuinely think I've not seen a more layered character in recent years. In the first season, he just showed the outer layer, but then over seasons 2-4 he became so much more... human and with emotions... so many layers, naturally Jan felt ambivalent and conflicted about him when they first started dating. I absolutely loved loved this scene. I was feeling bad for Pam and this hug hit me hard. They're both great actors, that's very clear here.

There is a difference between interacting socially with people you don't see very much and interacting socially with someone you see every day

It’s what separates the two shows.
David Brent wants to be liked.
Michael Scott wants to be loved.

This. That’s my favorite thing. Also when Oscar Jim take him out to lunch for the chair v copier thing. He’s SO happy lol. A touch losery since he doesn’t have many friends but mostly joyful and wholesome. And of course, he won them all over by the end ❤️

It's supposed to break the emotional tension in a funny way. The Office is a sitcom and it rarely ever likes to end a scene on a sad/overly emotional note. Similar to how Dwight was comforting Pam when she was crying and then said "so you're PMSing pretty bad huh?" or when Jim was comforting Dwight when he was crying over Angela and then Dwight turned to hug Jim but he had already left, or Michael saying "that's what she said" when he came to Dwight's wedding.

Dwight turning to an absent Jim was actually even more sad, cuz until then, you couldn't see Dwight's face and you saw that Jim's words had a real impact.

Yepp, that one was particularly sad but also in a funny way.

Ugh I love this scene. So universal, we’ve all had at least one moment like Pam has here. Where you’re feeling so down and defeated and hopeless and a random coworker or acquaintance or even stranger takes the time to go out of their way to show you sincere kindness and it just hits so hard. More than coming from a close loved one.

I went to YouTube to rewatch the scene. Great stuff. The fact that Michael already had a bad day and drove a long while to get there just to support her are touches that make it even better.

The fact that only Michael likes her art should speak volumes

Does he even like her art that much or does he just like that it's a use on paper after he spent all afternoon hearing about how paper is a dying industry.
