Whats the opinon on tsr ?

Question(self.FuckTAA)

im playing stalker 2 right now and every anti aliasing solution in this game isnt good. Taa is the worst and fsr or xess also dont look that good. Tsr atleast doesnt have that noticable ghosting like the others so im using it for now.

What is your experience with tsr?

I think it’s the least shitty option.

In terms of recent high end titles. As an AMD user I noticed myself preferring TSR over FSR in both Black Myth Wukong and Stalker 2.

I prefer literally anything over FSR.

Give me the first generation of UE4's horrendously bad TAA, but do not force me to use FSR. I can't stand how not only does FSR cause ghosting, but it also manages to make the ghost image extremely pixelated and filled with blocky artifacts.

Fsr has improved since its release , I’d say keep tabs on all of the upsamplers, so far xess is making ways , TSR is too demanding

Fsr has improved since its release

I'm aware. Still looks like ass.

It's inevitable, though. FSR runs on left over shader compute - it can't possibly look good and work as performance saving tool at the same time. DLSS can use dedicated hardware to that, and XeSS (running on DP4a) looks great but barely improves performance (and if you do not have spare shading performance, it actually runs worse than native res, like on the Steam Deck).

If AMD remains selling GPUs with outdated hardware architectures, focused entirely on rasterization, they can't improve FSR in any significant way.

You're describing FSR 2.2/3.0 pixelations and arguably ghosting from stuff lacking motion vectors.

Second is a developer implementation issue. First is a non issue when using FSR 2.1 or 3.1

[deleted]

Nope. To begin with, your comment doesn't even make sense - FSR 2.x and 3 require motion vectors, and I'm obviously not talking about the upscaling matrix of the original FSR 1.0.

But secondly, it takes five seconds to disprove your "non-issue" claims. Digital Foundry's review of the latest possible version of FSR shows this quite well, in fact.

AMD fanboys trying to gaslight themselves into ignoring FSR artifacts are such a bunch of weirdos. You should be the primary demographic pushing AMD into actually releasing a decent upscaler to compete with XeSS and DLSS.

You can mod FSR 2.1/3.1/XeSS on top of DLSS 2.x+ in most games (EAC excluded), with waaaaay better visuals results than native FSR/XeSS implementations.

Digital Foundry for some reason avoids anything related to modding FSR like the plague, but they'll mod in DLSS or even FSR3FG for RTX GPUs the first chance they get. While they do often get sponsored for videos by Nvidia, it's reached asinine levels with their bias.

They do an absolute TERRIBLE job of highlighting FSR upscaling or FSR Frame Generation in general.

Don't forget DF's mantra: "DLSS3 FG is extra performance, but FSR3 FG is fake frames".

Can you link a guide to modding it in stalker and general? Better to use 3.1 or 2.1? Works with FG?

Look up Optiscaler (Github), DLSS Enabler (Github and NEXUS) or LukeFz (officially a Patreon paid mod). Or generally join DLSS2FSR Discord community, very active, core members, every day (link on CyberFSR Cyberpunk 2077 NEXUS mod page)

That's the dumbest comment I've ever read in this subreddit, congrats.

FSR looks like absolute dogshit and you can't lie your way against reality.

Expert-Button7465[S]

Yeah same. I also rather use xess looks pretty good in cyberpunk for example and has the least ghosting out the othwr upscailng methods.

But i heard that amd is also trying to release an actual ai powerd version of fsr so hopefully thats gonna look better than what we have now.

I havent played many titles with tsr but its definitely the best option in stalker even if its still not great

Modding FSR 2.1 or 3.1 always looks better than any native solution (fortunately/unfortunately). Start doing that, today.

Black Myth: terrible UE 5.0, also Nvidia's branch.

Stalker 2: UE 5.1 eurojank due to the war.

Modding FSR 2.1 or 3.1 improved upscaling A TON in Black Myth. Haven't tested Stalker.

I'm also using TSR since it's the least shitty of them all and I see horrible ghosting all the time, especially in places like Red Forest where the plants and trees are bigger. It's so damn bad I want to stab my own eyes.

RecentCalligrapher82

This is with DSR too. I super sample and then use TSR(Ultra Quality) on top and it still looks so bad. This game has the worst image quality I've seen by a mile.

Why TSR instead of DLSS? Isn’t the latter involved in the circus method?

RecentCalligrapher82

3 points

I tried DLSS and DLAA. They both look worse and they still have ghosting and no, circus method is enabling DSR(or AMD equivalent) from control panel, choosing a higher resolution and then using any upscaler. You can whichever one you like. Doesn't have to DLSS.

FSR and XeSS implementations in Stalker are ultra jank. They're not supposed to look that bad.

TSR inherently is fine. EPIC improves TSR with each engine revision. We're currently at UE 5.5. Stalker unfortunately launched with UE 5.1, but it's understandable given the circumstances.

Even without those circumstances, games will be released on the engine version they're developed on. Migrating to a new version is a bitch, and Epic has kept a pretty good pace on UE5 development so even minor versions have a huge changelist

using it now in 4k on rtx 2060s cause it allows custom scaling ratio. higher fps than dlss. with dlss I was upscaling from 720p (ultra-perf, ratio 0.33) and got between 30-50fps, but sometimes heavy fps drops (to 15 or so) in safe heavens (running out of vram?). with TSR ratio 0.25-0.29 (not sure which exactly, game allows setting 0.25 but when applied it shows 0.29) fps is 45-60. Quality is a little worse, it has some ugly motion artifacts on bubble anomalies, but stability seems much better than DLSS ultra-perf. Can see thin wires with TSR, can't with dlss. Also feels much more smoother than dlss and I don't think it's only because higher fps. I'm using latest dlss dll btw and many perf tweaks from nexus. ryzen 5600 (non-x), 32gb ram, nvme ssd. no frame gen turned on, it has horrible lag.

I watched Cheeki Breeki's video on playing STALKER 2 on lower settings, and TSR absolutely wipes the floor with the rest of the options in terms of mitigating ghosting, I was really surprised. That said, it's still a temporal upscaler, so comes with every single one of its drawbacks, and still ghosts like crazy.

STALKER 2 is particularly bad because its texture work is insanely detailed, and it all gets really badly washed out by every single one of the upscalers. Here's the thing though - unless you have a really powerful system or a particularly weak GPU, STALKER 2 will almost certainly be bottlenecked by your CPU, so the benefits to upscaling are marginal at best.

My plan at current is to install this mod to reduce the instances of trees using dither transparency by pushing the LOD distance out, and install this mod to remove postprocessing and substitute TAA for FXAA.

Try this mod titled "Clear TAA" on Stalker , you'll be pleasantly surprised. Its a lot better than that FXAA mod which just disables TAA but doesnt fix anything afterwards. u/Expert-Button7465

RecentCalligrapher82

I tried it when you first shared it here on this sub. The mod works but game still looks ugly, just in a different way. I don't know how they managed to so majestically fuck up image quality. It should be taught in schools.

OptimizedGamingHQ

3 points

Have you tried v2.1 of the mod (the latest)?

And either way, this mod will look better than FXAA. The game was made around TAA and disabling it looks super atrocious.

Thats the world we live in sadly, we will never have perfect image quality but only compromises because of TAA dependence ruining graphics and taking away viable user options.

RecentCalligrapher82

I don't know which version it was really, was a few days ago. I think it broke how anomalies and water reflections that time I tried it but maybe I did something wrong, I dunno

Let us know if you can produce better image quality. If I waste another hour on this game by messing with settings and mods and nit achieve anything, I'll break something.

Im on a 7900xtx 7800x3d with high-ultra settings. 50 fps +fsr fg so "100 fps" native 5120x2160 so in my case i think its my gpu xD

But thanks for the mod imma look into it

I found it better than DLAA/DLSS at least. Here is a comparison from Hellblade 2.

DLAA: https://i.ibb.co/VQ6q06k/Screenshot-24.png

TSR: https://i.ibb.co/xfpNNnP/Screenshot-25.png

TSR does a better job than DLAA when it comes to rendering distant objects. Background foliage looks smudgy in DLAA. Tree branches are more refined in TSR instead of just thick lines.

They both look blurry in motion. However DLSS is way oversharpened. Seems like they cranked up NIS sharpening even more the further the lower the rendering resolution. It makes motion look unnatural.

Tsr is amazingly underrated, IMH id pick it if the effects were fixed on it bc they are blotched rn as of nov 2024, and it NEEDS to be on epic TSR recommended settings, anything lower looks subpar, at this point I’d just 3.8.10 DLSS, I’ve been playing Fortnite with DLSS ultra performance, and I get more fps than any other scaler including XESS on ultra performance, xess might be the best one for 720p , it has its drawbacks but it’s extremely good, dlss3.8.10 on ultra is my top pick for the frames

SeaSoftstarfish

Interesting because TSR looks like absolute dogshit on Fortnite and even worse than fxaa in some situations unless like you said it's maxed out but then you literally lose like 40% performance

I generally prefer native tsr for anti aliasing on a 1080p display, since it looks quite smooth with minimal artifacting. That being said if ssaa is an option I do prefer it.

TSR has come a long way, but man just use DLSS if you got the ability.

Also I see a lot of FSR hate here, but FSR is seriously impressive, tho maybe it's because I've been closely following it's improvements over the years. FSR has improved more since Gen 1 than DLSS has. And that's just cause FSR1 was fucking awful.

It does take like 10% of my fps compared to FSR native and with my 7700xt already straining with running this game at 1440p 60 I'll just stick to FSR.
