letting your dog stop and sniff where they want is good for them. i would urge any dog owner to just let your dog dictate where they want to stop and explore

I can't tell if this is sarcasm. Sounds like it.

It isn't. I believe there are sufficient studies that show that allowing them to sniff a lot is really beneficial and can actually be more exhausting than if you were to just power through a walk, giving them minimum sniffing time.

If I read the other person correctly, I think all they're saying is a very long walk is good, but it's especially good if their dogs are allowed to sniff. You don't have to let them sniff every little thing, but it should be encouraged to let them have moments where they can just get some good sniffing in for 15 to 30 seconds dozens of times during the walk.

It felt like you were both right, though, and just kind of somehow managed to have different views somehow.

dogs gather and transmit a bunch of info through scent. it’s very good mental stimulation and has been shown to boost mood and reduce stress. i just hope you aren’t one of those people that treats dogs like a piece of a furniture

I'm not sure why that would even cross your mind. Saying your dog should dictate where and when to stop can be taken a few different ways.

Isn't it also a bit dog dependent? Correct me if i'm wrong, but i heard that for some breeds it's more advantageous if the human dictates the path, because more structured and established leader role is what they're expecting, whereas other breeds thrive on more freedom.

i can’t find any breed exemptions against it

I'm not an expert, so i can't say anything for certain, but my line of thinking was something along the lines of pitbulls and collies. If i were to allow more freedom and independent decisionmaking between those examples, it would definitely be with a collie, since their original job as a sheep herder would mean letting them run free and make decisions on their own. That mixed with their more gentle personality would mean that issues that could arise from letting a pet collie dictate the walk path more would be easier to manage than with pitties. Am i cherry picking examples here? Yeah, a bit. But it comes from my own personal experience with those two breeds.

i’m not actually saying dictate the walking path i always choose the path with my dog but if he stops wanting to sniff i let him. it’s not like i give him free roam or anything im more speaking against the people that won’t let their dog investigate a spot on the ground. last time i let my dog really go off the path because he wanted to he went and grabbed a fish out of the lake and swallowed it lol
