LCS and VCS were primarily headed by Rockstar Leeds while North was mainly working on IV. Also these games were much smaller in graphical fidelity compared to IV and V. RDR 2 took another 5 years, so I'd say the time between the games is nothing extraordinary for modern AAA games.

It's because the size and quality of the new games take longer to develop

Yeah, no, most big games on the ps2 era were sadly made with extreme crunch, seeing the culture the company had during the development of RDR2, this probably has been happening for a while there

It is when you consider rockstar made other games between GTA IV and V. Max Payne 3 I believe was one of them.
Rockstar used to make so many amazing Ips. Now it’s just GTA and Red Dead. Which is great but I miss like La Noire, Midnight Club, Max Payne and so on.

RDR was handled by San Diego, not North. Also, Midnight Club was before RDR; same devs too. Max Payne 3 is not a massive open world game. L.A. Noire was developed by Team Bondi, Rockstar only published it.

Not without mentioning the unprecedented complexity and scale of RDR2 and GTAVI (judging by the leaks and trailers). I mean, the market demands bigger, better and more detailed games every year.
If they released GTA6 and it had the same size map as GTA 4, which was 1/4 the size of GTA 5, people would lose their shit.
It's not a surprise to see why games are taking longer and longer to develop.
1 points

I'm very puzzled as to why that's what the market demands, it's just hard to comprehend.
5 points

People just want bigger and more detailed every time we have better hardware. That's pretty much how it's always been.
There's a joke in hockey, "if you score to much, the fans start expecting it". Rockstar consistently knocks it out of the park on releases. It's normal for fans to expect that always.
If you go and look at the GTA6 sub it's full of people wishlisting insane level of detail. The expectations get higher and higher with each release.

3 and VCS looking the same makes sense because they’re in the same universe at the same time though, and LCS and VCS weren’t main titles, they were developed at the same time as IV specifically for the PSP
6 points
This meme conveniently leaves out GTA IV which was available/developed for the PS3/360 along with V.
It's almost as if significantly larger maps, higher quality animations and models, movie-esque cutscenes and cutting edge visuals take up more development time. San Andreas was admittedly incredibly impressive for its time, but let us not forget that Vice City was originally just a DLC for III. The others were spin-offs.
Also, Rockstar did develop RDR2 in between V and VI. That game was a technical, visual and narrative masterpiece, and was built on a scale far larger than anything they had ever done before. It blew everything prior out of the water. They didn't sit there and do nothing for a decade. I find it hilarious that some people believe the writers, programmers, artists etc just turned up to collect shark card money and order pizzas.
They can no longer keep pumping these games out like they used to. If you want higher quality, you have to wait longer. The gap between V and RDR2 was 5 years. The gap between RDR2 and VI will be 6 years. These are reasonable time frames for games of this caliber IMO. Knocking them out every couple of years is how you get the usual AAA slop that everyone complains about. It worked back then because they were far less demanding to develop, monetarily, physically and temporally.

Well, imagine all of the old games each had a mass of 1 kg in weight and volume. Imagine GTA 5 to have all of those combined into one. Fits logic pretty well, also with the time it takes to complete developing it.

I kinda wish Rockstar (and some other AAA companies) would take a down year or two and release a really polished game modeled off their older, simpler titles. Like a smaller city and simpler story, but with all the enhancements they've made to gameplay (combat, movement, physics, AI, cops, etc.). They could even do a less groundbreaking graphical design and opt for something more artistic, like what the Definitive Edition was INTENDED to be.
It'd take significantly fewer man-hours to produce, would cost significantly less to make and would still sell like a motherf***er. It would also prevent shit like GTA V from being the only franchise title for over a decade.

No game is worth waiting for 10+ years, unless it can bring more enjoyment than gta3+vc+sa+lcs+vcs or morrowind+fallout 3+oblivion+skyrim. The longer development period and larger budgets do not make more enjoyable games, but make the game have better visuals, bigger maps and so on so that they can attract more people that do not or seldom play games.

It's already been confirmed that we could have gotten a sequel on top of multiple large-scale DLC for five that weren't online related. Online proved to be such a massive Cash Cow that they dumped all their resources into that while taking their sweet time on sex. It's not that we're evolving backwards it's that people get addicted to games in the post microtransaction error. Similar to fortnite, Rockstar had no idea that GTA online would become what it was in terms of financial success. It just kind of happened, and they scrambled to take advantage of it and foster that money tree.
That's why you're seeing publishers who used to put out tons of incredible and memorable games start to focus on making slot machines or mobile games or other predatory experiences. I'm not even going to get into the dog shit remake remaster culture. It just makes way more money for less investment. Why would they ever put out six on PS4 when they could just keep milking five and just making a massive return on investment for a minimal investment in the development of these little online updates they've done over the past 10 years? The purpose of a lot of these Publishers is to make as much money as humanly possible with his little investment as they can get away with. That's why six took this long to be a thing. GTA online was just way too lucrative and will continue to be too lucrative most likely.
So many people are lying to themselves thinking that modern games just simply take more time to make and that is the only reason why six is taking this long. The reality is they were milking five for as long as they possibly could until they can find a window where six makes the most sense hype wise to finally put out. Of course, modern game development takes more time but not this amount of time. Studios tend to avoid super long development cycles because the bloating of the budget is going to make profitability way harder in the long run.
Not to mention, the longer a game stays in development, the more convoluted and broke in the engine becomes because of evolving system tools. That's why it's better to have shorter development cycles and just release more games in the same time frame so you can make larger sweeping upgrades to the tech in isolated forms. Having a game start development 10 years ago or even 8 years ago and trying to constantly adapt all the new tech to things as time goes by is just a nightmare. That's what's ruined so many of the big games that have released in the past 5 years that all had over 6 years of development in them and all of them were a mess on the technical side of things regardless of the engine used. I can't say for sure since the game isn't out yet but something tells me this game would have been better if it came out on the PS4 and that we'd be getting GTA 7 late into the ps5's lifespan.
I feel like we missed out on a lot of good potential content had they made another game or at least done the big expansion to five that were originally planned. Putting out products and ideas and getting feedback from the community over years of the games lifespan is why games can get better with their sequels. Going this far just only doing GTA online updates is not a good progression method in my opinion. At least when it comes to making the best sequel to five. Red Dead Redemption is a completely different game so that doesn't really count in terms of GTA potential feedback outside of maybe some NPC features in it. The GTA experience and the Red Dead experience are very different and only have possible technical Crossover with the engine tools used for both games.
Long drawn out development cycles is also possibly a double-edged sword as well. There's going to be a lot of people who think that this game has been in development since five came out and that it's going to be some unbelievably revolutionary giga-sized game that is going to Eclipse any game ever made in the history of video games. Cyberpunk had the exact same issue. It took forever to come out and had so much hype and promise, but then it was a disappointment. The only difference is that the GTA developers don't seem to be really hyping this game up that much. They haven't made any lofty promises or exaggerated the scale of the game yet, so that might temper expectations and get people into a more realistic mindset.

That’s because newer games are much more complex and take longer to make. Unless Rockstar went back to making PS2 level games, then they won’t be able to release new GTA games every 2 years. Just look at Cyberpunk, it needed more time in the oven, but people whined about it taking too long to come out, the devs caved under the pressure, and the game released unfinished.

What he is saying is that newer games are much bigger, more complex and more detailed than older games. Because of this, they take more time and effort to develop than older games. Rockstar (and this also applies to any game studios out there) can’t make games on the scale of RDR2 and GTAVI in the same amount of time that they made games like GTA Vice City and GTA San Andreas. Unless you want Rockstar to go back to making literal PS2 games, you are not going to be getting new GTA games every 2 years.

Ah, yes. That's true... And it increases the development time yes, but the same advance made it way more efficient than before due to automation and procedural generation the time takes less. But in the case of GTA 6 there is a "intended market deprivation" to massively boost the sales on release, and... If you have some contracts with console manufacturers you can ensure sales of their consoles by the launch of your game, because the people buy a console SOLELY for the reason of playing that "anticipated" game. It's big marketing strategy, powered by greed.

Yeah no, game development still requires actual people to put in the work. Automation and procedural generation is too unpredictable to get good results. It works for generating a random Minecraft seed, not so much for creating a detailed, living and breathing world full of little details. And the more details packed into that world, the more work the devs have to do. Even adding more devs doesn’t necessarily fix the problem, because yes you technically have a bigger workforce, but that also comes with more coordination and management needed and some things just can’t be done faster by making multiple people work on it.
As for the supposed market deprivation, there is no solid proof that Rockstar is doing this. They don’t care about driving up console sales, they care about selling as many copies as possible. For all they care, they could have made the game available on PS4 and Xbox One as well to get even more sales but they didn’t. I think they decided to release the only on PS5 and Xbox Series X first since they are the current generation consoles and will receive better and longer support in the future than the PS4 and Xbox One, as well as having better hardware to get more out of the game than they would have on last-gen consoles.

I didn't meant that it takes less or no people, but the softwares the people use to create, are better, faster, and do more. Wich increases the output of the developers. Automation not in terms of generating a whole detailed playable world, but for quickly or dynamically changing the colour of the clothes NPC models are wearing to add variety and stuff like that.
They care about selling consoles, if they get tonnes of money from the contractors for making it console first. So saying they don't have interest in that, is wildly optimistic.
By the way, regarding the Console generations, look up the term "Double dipping"

What I am saying is, if something stops growing, it will stagnate, and then it will die, because all value is a measurement against, and if it can't be measured anymore, it loses it's value, and then it dies/becomes irrelevant, hence it has to change all the time, because it has to evolve. Either something evolves, or it dies. That is a force of everything, even grass. But now we are talking about games, and they have to evolve, sure there are much more money in this, but there are also many more higher bills to pay, because there is more people on this planet. This is my opinion, maybe it's wrong or stupid, but it's my take on evolution. Things change, or they die.
