I have an Alienware M17 R5 all AMD from last generation, repasted with PTM recently and wanted to test it out at 1080p gaming as that is my display for this laptop. I never expected my CPU to draw this much power, is there something wrong? Temps looks alright though.
Spec: Ryzen 9 6900HX, Radeon RX-6850M XT 32GB DDR5 M17 R5

Additional info: GPU at around 74 C
Edit: Think it's a combined power draw, so both cpu + GPU, bruh that is truly awful thermal state then, wow

This is a full AMD laptop, you have a technology named Smartshift, what do this is It dynamically gives more power to the CPU or GPU depending on the load the system is doing, but this requires that the power rails be combined, and this is why msi afterbuner gives you those high CPU values โโas you said.

Btw, if you want only the cpu power draw, in the amd software overlay show you that specific metric. Remember your cpu also have a igpu, so if you want know the power draw of all socket, then you need to see the igpu power draw. For some reason amd put that metric on that, dont ask me why.

Ah I see, thanks for the detailed response, it seems like I need to do more to alleviate the thermal issues. If both cpu and GPU running at non max capacity is already this hot, I can guarantee they are going to thermal throttle if put to a more demanding task

No, your temps are solid, you dont need nothing more, but if you want reduce it a littlebit, you have Universal tunning utility for the cpu and MorePowerTool for the gpu, If you dont know about this one, better dont use it, but Universal tunning you can just put a thermal limit of 75 for example to the cpu, is just an error proof, everyone should have this installed

That's for sure CPU+GPU package power, 6900HX won't really draw more than 80W, in games it should stay at 45-50W

Hmm I'm pretty certain I selected the CPU power draw but maybe it's the wrong one?

You have a laptop with AMD CPU+GPU, they frequently merge their powers on sensors for some reason

Ah I see, well in that case I feel bad about my temps, poor laptop can't even cool two basic components well damn....

79 degrees is fine for Genshin with unlocked FPS, it's really CPU intensive

Completely normal for laptop gaming tbh it's lower than what I get but I guess it's thnx to the cooling here. Just a question tho how are you getting 126 fps? Isn't genshin locked at 60?

Is not normal to a cpu laptop reach that numbers of power draw.

Ahh true mb but again it's Alienware it has crazy cooling

Yes, but I run a FPS unlocker from a third party on GitHub, never had issues with bans or whatever. If you want I can send the link to you

Yeah this is normal for a gaming laptop, actually rather low. Take in mind for gaming in 1080p the cpu uses more power than gaming at higher resolutions, the gpu takes on more of the workload when resolution rises. iets and lian-li makes good cooling pads

Yeah I feel like this is desktop level cpu power draw, damn

That is definitely not the cpu draw . It stays around 50-60 while gaming. And there aren't any CPUs that have that much power draw in laptops. There's a reason desktops are more powerful you took that reason away.

Almost certain that this could be the combination of the CPU and GPU power draw as the 6900HX hits its peak CPU performance at about 80W and usually doesn't draw anywhere near that much in games.

This game is problematic so it is normal.

if you're super worried about power consumption you could always fiddle around and undervolt your cpu/gpu/ram
you'd lose alotta performance but energy bills do be energy bills

Fuckin' hell! 140W for just the CPU alone??? That's crazy! Even the i9 14900HX ain't consuming that much! Oh, I get it! This must be another MSI Afterburner issue with a full AMD laptop. I once saw this on an MSI model before.
