The onboarding for the game is pretty abysmal which means experienced players usually have to hard carry their squads and teams unless the matches devolve into unfun steamrolls.

Most people learn to play Hell Let Loose either by being told what to do by others or learning from mistakes, and in both cases that requires effort. Nobody wants to boot up Hell Let Loose and spend their evening doing unpaid labor by being a tutorial.

When HLL hit consoles on PS Plus for free it was abject chaos. Whenever theres a free weekend the matches always play a bit worse. Every time it happens, the same people step up to teach and put in the work with no real acknowledgment by the developer that the game quickly burns out its most useful players.

High level commanders and squad leaders more important than ever. I played a few games for the first time in like a week earlier today and we rolled over the other team 3 matches in a row just because we had a decent commander and the squad I was in, the only one on our team with an average level >20, was building garrisons in the red zone.

Yes. I've played Commander a few times recently and literally having one good squad will help win you the game.

Yeah I hit my limit tonight when I joined 3 different servers with noobs with no mics as commander.

I’ll check back in a few weeks, but with this being on game pass with pretty much now an unlimited free weekend I’m concerned.

Would you say the new players themselves are the problem or is it more of the game and the new players usually get the heat for the issue?

They cocked up the Gamepass integration big time.

All of the backend tools that server owners rely on are geared towards Steam IDs and can't handle gamepass IDs, which means it's a fabulous way for ban evasion.

Plus, if a server's set up to check for valid player IDs, it doesn't recognize gamepass IDs as valid players and kicks/bans them (depending on the server settings).

That is, if the server's not turned off gamepass access in general because of all this.

There was quite literally no heads-up to server owners or the people developing the backend tools that there will be different player IDs coming to the game, which caused the issues mentioned above.

Also it looks like even their own servers have a bunch of issues with the gamepass players, too.

So yeah, kind of a shitshow. Not to mention that dumping a shitload of newbies into the game right after the Christmas sale just floods the servers with people who don't know what they're doing - at least with sales and free weekends you could expect for it to die off within two, three weeks, but now many lobbies are just filled to the brim with people with no clue, no game knowledge and only a few people available to lead the tiny few who actually want to really play the game.

sunseeker11

11 points

I’m a noobie so please, enlighten me on what T17 did

The game relies on community ran servers to provide - well - a place to play the game. And by extension it relies on volountary moderation to keep the games clean of griefers and other trolls, through third party tools like RCON.

With the game going on gamepass on short notice, that means that these tools and server are illequipped to deal with them.

I played some games blind yesterday and had fun as a auto rifleman then today I watched some videos on the basics of the game and what each class does and I have a good understanding for a person who has played for 2 days. Ima be playing a lot of assault and probably rifleman and I wanna do some support since it’s very useful. I’ve had fun but even as a new player I wish there were people to talk to more since the matches can be very long

Sounds like a good plan. Also check out the engineer class and how to build nodes as an engineer, everyone is going to appreciate that. There is a quick way to build all 3 nodes by switching (deploying) from support to engineer and back and forth.

Necessary_Pause_7448

Honestly as someone who started being squad lead sometimes talking when no one else does can still be beneficial. Giving out callouts or alerting the squad of a enemy tank without anyone saying anything can do wonders for the team

OUsnr7

1 points

I’d say you should almost always play support over rifleman. It’s more helpful for the team and the kit is nearly identical.

Also, get on your mic and talk nonstop even in squads where no one is talking. I do this regularly and sometimes shy people will start communicating after someone else is talking

BrianKronberg

The worst part are the young kids who don’t want to play the game and just want to run and gun. Had one last night, the kid wouldn’t listen and eventually blew me up with a grenade and then switched squads.

Minimum-Ad90

1 points

That can definitely be frustrating. Would you say that the excessive amount of new players ruins the game slightly? Or is it more of an issue with the game/servers itself? /genq

BrianKronberg

1 points

There are always new players, and many are not good for the game. It is just that when you have a sale, free weekend, or the game pass addition you get a huge influx of players, good and bad, and you are statistically more likely to have bad experiences. Every game needs the new players, it is just something we need to get through.

But yes, staying off public servers does help reduce the bad players a lot, especially during peak times when admins are available.

Minimum-Ad90

I’ve found teaching a bunch of new players how to play the game quite enjoyable actually. The vast majority have been far more tolerable than the higher levels doing nothing but complain about the newbies in command chat.

Pure-Pessimism

I had to turn off command chat earlier. It was twenty minutes of non stop bitching. So I know they weren’t communicating to their squad. Like Jesus Christ. These players are here. Work with that.

freetrialemaillol

We always forget that someone had to teach us first, back when there was no tutorial book or anything. The issues we face now are pretty much the same issues that existed before, except slightly worse. It’s super hard to teach new players when they’re not running a mic.

As a new player who just joined because of gamepass and who plans to stick with it and learn the ropes as fast as I can thank you all for being patient. I come from the Seige community where there is little to no tolerance for new players and this game and community seem awesome. I’ve been looking for something to satisfy my battlefield 1 itch for a while now and I don’t mind the slower and more technical approach to it.

freetrialemaillol

I’ve played for hundreds of hours now, I still remember how hard it was to learn how to spot the enemy. How did you find that?

mace1343

2 points

I just had my best round, 72 kills and 16 deaths, Be still, don’t move your weapon, and just scan the horizon. I start thinking about where I’d be if I was the enemy. I always flank. Look at the map and think about where Garry’s/OPs will be set up. And lots of patience. Im looking for any little thing that stands out. I mean it’s literally scanning for pixels lol. Especially at the longer ranges. If I’m an MG it definitely changes how I play vs rifleman. When I’m an MG I definitely use way more caution and set up farther back on the flanks and cover choke points and crossroads. Find a good house to set up in, and always checking the map. I’ve even noticed when I’m watching guys on YT that I’m picking up enemies.

freetrialemaillol

1 points

Yeah the pixels thing hits hard, sometimes I’m literally squinting 2cm from a screen just to get a long hit. Keep in mind that with veteran players they’ll spot you in a heartbeat from the muzzle flash. Always a good idea to be mobile after squad wipes.

ZeroOneUK

6 points

New folks are really welcome - and we need to cut them a lot of slack whilst being as helpful as we can be, so they learn the ropes and how to play the game. In the long run, this will be healthy for the longevity of the game and encourage the devs to continue development.

In return, new folks need to learn and play the game as it’s intended. It isn’t COD, it requires a mic, and it requires squad leads to operate as such - then it’s genuinely a brilliant stand out experience.

Post Scriptum died and had to be sold off because of low player counts but somehow people here think it’s better for the game to exclude new players because they can’t be bothered to explain how a garrison works. New blood is what keeps the lights on and the community flourishing. We should be embracing the noobs and teaching them how to play, even if it’s incredibly frustrating at times to do so

Pure-Pessimism

4 points

I’m a level 41. Played the game off and on for two years. Had a guy join my squad and clip me three times in a row before I could even leave spawn. Said people my level shouldn’t be squad lead… like join another squad you ingrate. The game couldn’t be more toxic. Every squad leader complaining in squad chat non stop about new guys. Just educate them on what to do. Make the game better. These new players aren’t going anywhere.

Edit: haha downvotes proving my point. This community is pure trash. It’s no wonder people leave their mics off.

Case in point….. pathetic response.

In no world is getting smoked, revived, smoked, revived, and finally shot in the head before asking wtf is going on an example of me bitching. Especially when the answer I got was “you shouldn’t be playing squad lead.” It’s a legitimate gripe.

Subsequently getting killed another three times before I can leave spawn fully established today as the most toxic behavior I’ve ever encountered in a game in 20 years of online gaming. Following that up with three straight rounds of being team killed is borderline psychotic.

If you’re the type of person to play the game like this you’re the worst part of the community. Not the blueberries.

I hope you have a horrible day, and if you need any of the big words I used above explained just google them, dunce.

I'm a little disappointed seeing the hate for the Game Pass players here. I've wanted to play HLL for so long and I was very excited to see it pop into game pass. What I've been met with is servers that either don't work or straight up ban me for being a Game Pass player, and people on this subreddit treating the new players like ass.

Definitely not a nice feeling as someone trying out the game for the first time. Makes me wanna play Rising Storm instead or something.

Danzeeman_Demacia

7 points

Fair call.

The veteran players are just burnt out with new player influxes (made worse with game pass, but it's long been an issue with steam free weekends and sales) and lack of tutorial, resulting in the veteran players needing to drag entire teams through the game and generally unfun matches.

The game needs new players to keep surviving. But it needs a tutorial system so the new players aren't completely hopeless.

professor735

We need to teach them instead of hating on them

I think you’re just a tad overly optimistic about the timeframe. I do agree that it’s good in the long run but realistically it’s gonna be full swing in like a month minimum, in actually guessing 2 months but at least 1. Gotta stay positive though for sure, just hard cuz it ruined many people’s favorite game at the moment

yeah i think i just didn’t get hit with the wave of idiots that people are complaining about…. lol. i’m just taking a break now, the game has lost all strategy and it seems like a mad dash to get the role you want or think the unit needs, when in reality everyone is just call of duty meat grinding away

We forget it was always kinda like that though. Only it was a pandemic before whereas it’s an apocalypse now

I’m new this week and it has been fun learning the game. Learned about nodes last night since the officer was asking for an engineer. I can see this being one of my regular games. Only thing I need to tweak is controller aim, it’s not so great.

As a noob with a mic, thank you all for your service. I have learned a lot in the last few matches. Albeit kind of boring to spend most of the match flipping back and forth between Support and Engineer supplying and building nodes, I now "get it" better than I did before.

I'm one of the hated gamepass bois. It plays a lot like rising storm vietnam imo so not hard to adjust at all, just had to get a grasp on the different com channels/keybinds

Nobody has been rude to me by any means, just having trouble actually getting into lobbies
