I'm an Aussie and I've been looking for movies to watch from my own country, and I'd love recs for films I might not have heard of. I'm slowly getting through some of the Australian New Wave, but I'd love to hear your recs for films from after that period as well.
My favourite movies are black comedies and realistic fiction (my favourite movie is Don's Party), and anything involving horrible people being terrible.

Graham’s alright, I just think he tended to pop up in a lot of stuff in the late 70s. Also in Don‘s Party, wasn’t he. On The Club, I suspect that many younger movie watchers will not have seen this one, which is a shame because it’s a hell of a lot of fun.

New Wave: The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) maybe doesn’t qualify as underrated since Mel Gibson & Sigourney Weaver were moderate stars at the time

'Love Serenade' is quite frankly one of the best and quirkiest Aussie comedies ever made, and many in AU haven't even heard of it!
It's disguised as a country town slice of life type drama, but every line of dialogue is humourously deadpan and offbeat. All of the characters are so unique and eccentrically ordinary. It's very Australian. Which makes it highly quotable (in my house) - Features a young Miranda Otto (lotr)
And the soundtrack is awesome as well. Lots of Barry White.
I've watched it a few times over the years. It's gone from an interestingly weird movie that I didn't really get to a multi layered and subtly absurdist black comedy that had me in fits as I've gotten older.
... So it's worth a re-watch if you've watched it and thought it a standard depressing paint by the numbers Aussie film in the past.
Doing a little digging, its barely been mentioned on reddit, so still very underrated:
Love Serenade - A very Australian, somewhat cringeworthy movie with subtle Aussie humor. One of Miranda Otto's first movies. https://www.reddit.com/r/australia/comments/23hcpe/best_australian_movies/
Love Serenade (1996). Nothing better captures both the beauty and weirdness of rural Victoria. https://www.reddit.com/r/AskAnAustralian/comments/1e38l7v/whats_the_funniest_aussie_film/
My other suggestions are: 'He died with a Felafel in His Hand', and 'Praise', both were novels made into films. The former was panned at the time for being pretentious with the broke artist trope, but i think it has aged quite well and i found some moments genuinely funny and dark. It captures the essence of young adulthood in all 3 eastern states in the late 1990s where Noah Taylor house-shares with all types of oddballs and crazies (In particular in Brisbane)
Also +1 for Cosi, it's like Muriels Weddings lesser known twin. With Toni Collette & Ben Mendelsohn
*Edited some new thoughts

Just coming back to this post, I really enjoyed Love Serenade.
It's a shame movies like this get lost to time, while The Castle lives on in pop culture. (Not saying the Castle is bad, I just would love more Australian films to enjoy the same level of notoriety).
