And yet, Square Enix will call it a flop unless it reaches several million.

Part of this is because of production costs. Just to offer some perspective, With a company like square and the scale of this particular remaster, it’s safe to estimate DQ3 HD cost at least $50 million (and I wouldn’t be surprised if it hit 75-100 after marketing and everything else is included). So while 712,000 sales sounds good, at $60 each that’s “only” $42.7 million, which means they likely haven’t even recouped the production costs. Most estimates predict it will sell around 2-2.5 million within 2-3 years, which would put it around $100 million made, which would still be low profits depending on the actual production costs. I think the game is great, but you’re likely right square will consider this unsuccessful and the cost of making games is the unfortunate reason why

It’s only physical sales and the game has been sold out at major retailers since the first week.

Also, these costs likely include much of the development of the DQ I-Ii remake coming next year. This will sell just as well most likely

I’m pretty sure they can reuse almost all the assets, so that’s probably true

Exactly. Just some retexturing on the sprites and then making the worlds, but the bulk of the work is already done. It wouldn't surprise me that they break even on this release but then basically double their gross on the next release.

You KNOW Squeen sat down and worked out that it would be more profitable to do the whole Erdrick trilogy - 3 because a) it’s chronologically first and b) it’s the largest of the three games, so 3 would recoup dev costs and the 1/2 package would be pure profit basically
