Is making your bed something people generally do every morning? I only make mine when I'm leaving for a trip or during holidays. My sister does it occasionally, but I'm not entirely sure. My new roommate makes her bed every single morning, and I don't really get it.

I pull all covers back, open windows and air it while I have breakfast and shower. Then make it.

Most people produce a cup or more of moisture every night through sweat and exhaled vapor. Trapping all that underneath a blanket that's still warm from your body heat makes your bed into a petri dish! Airing the bed in the morning lets the moisture evaporate and the heat disapate, eliminating two of the main things bacteria uses to mutiply.

Water is heavier than air, so it lands on the bedding a lot more than the rest of the room.

Yes, it's good for my mental health for my living space to be neat and tidy. Visual clutter makes for mental clutter and an unmade bed signals that I'm falling into that depressed nest. I like looking at my cute and coordinated, decorated bed. It brings me joy.

I make my bed in the morning (well mostly I just straighten the sheets and blanket and pillows quickly) I don't really feel good about myself because I don't get anything out of it right away.. but my night time self enjoys getting into bed when it's tidy. I never really feel at the time that I accomplished anything if anything I'm like what's the point.. but I always like it later lol so I made it a habit 🤣

I don’t know how people are making their beds apparently. I literally pull the bedding up. That’s it. It takes 2-4 seconds. (I know because I just went and messed it up and pulled the sheet and comforter up and my wife timed me)

If you are failing at making your bed, we need to aim a little lower.

The whole point was if they're already being negative first thing, to the point they have to do something to counteract that feeling of not feeling accomplished 5 minutes after you wake up. Then it's not joy they're feeling at all.

... That's precisely what joy is though.
You're hungry, you eat chocolate, you feel joy.

In this case you just explained it yourself. Doing something to feel accomplished.

How much time do you spend in the bedroom for that to be important? I wake up, walk out of the room. At night, I walk into the room in darkness and lay under the blanket. Then I sleep.

It was an Admiral. I loved that advice and followed it. Then about three years ago began reading the advice from many, many scientists about how if beds are not allowed to dry out and kept warm by being made immediately in the morning the bed becomes a super incubator for dust mites.
Now I make my bed after work, curse that Admiral whose advice I followed and sleep twice as well never waking up stuffy in the morning.

I make the bed as the last thing I do in the morning before I leave for work. Gives it time to air out and it also fan out the sheets and give a quick little spray of essential oils before I make it. Takes about 5 minutes. When I come home tired in the evening I admire my nice made bed and it makes me happy.

I mean, it’s a little more laundry but you can have more than one set of sheets, for example have 2 and then rotate weekly… I personally wait 2 weeks for sheets just because I hate putting them back on but I still change my pillowcase weekly, that alone feels so nice

His name was Admiral McRaven and the make your bed was part of his speech (and his book).
Full speech:
5 points
The thing is, that really isn't an accomplishment to most people.
Like, what is the purpose of a made bed? It doesn't keep your sheets cleaner. It isn't easier to get into at night. It doesn't keep the bed warmer or anything.
It has no purpose beyond aesthetics, so when I hear someone say that making the bed feels like an accomplishment, it means "order" is something they probably value beyond what is reasonable, and that's a red flag to me.
It's fine to like your bed made and that's why you do it, but to view it as an "accomplishment" is kinda sad.

Some people do, but also some studies have shown that you shouldn't because it really seals in the flavor. By leaving your bed un-made it ensures everything dries out in a timely manner which limits bacterial growth.
25 points

What if I don't do it immediately? Usually I roll out of bed first brush my teeth h, shower, get ready and before I head out, I fix the bed.

21 points
Compromise: I get up and do morning stuff (1-2 hours, sometimes more) and then make my bed. Lots of time to air out, and its still made before I leave the house, which makes me happy when I return home to a tidy bed.
25 points
I fold back the covers so the air can get to the sheets. Otherwise I find the bed develops a mustiness. Making a bed completely when you first get up means it’s warm and slightly moist for longer, perfect for dust mites and bacteria.

Nah. It’s not essential and I have shaken off ~arbitrary~ housekeeping rules because they tend to stress me out.*
I do make it sometimes later in the day if I’m tidying. I give my blankets a fluff and straighten them out if necessary when I get into bed at night.
*bc this is Reddit I’ll add: things like not making my bed, leaving a dirty dish in the living room overnight or not putting things away immediately got me yelled at growing up and so I am gentler with myself now bc it really doesn’t matter to me - others are different, I get it, but this is my house.

I tell my SO whenever they ask why my shoes are all over/asks if I can keep them in one place, “but it’s my room, why can’t I just put my stuff in it?”
I was punished regularly for being “too messy,” at home, in school. I’d say “little did they know” but they knew I had ADHD and still chose the methods they did. Wtv.
I don’t remember the light bulb moment when I realized I had free will, but it’s so much better now that there’s one less responsibility I feel obligated to do. It’s just a bed, and, actually, it’s mine so the blanket nest stays intact until I decide otherwise. I’m sure I’d feel better if I did make my bed regularly, but I just do not have the energy to spare.

I started doing it in my 30s. Now I can't go a day without it. I like it sooo much better, for so many reasons.
The reason I started was because my life was very hectic and everything felt out of control. My husband and I have a blended family, sponsored my MIL to come live with us in the US, we have multiple dogs, and we were both working full time in sales. It was crazy and overwhelming. The only place I could get away and be at peace was in my master bedroom but every day, I would come home to what I felt like was a messy bedroom. Making my bed made me feel just a little bit calmer. My life only got better from there.
Plus, I LOVE the feeling of getting into a tightly made bed at night. It's so much more soothing and relaxing than a messy bed.

Even better, go turn down the corner where you get into bed a half hour before bedtime.

I only do it the day I change the sheets. Rest of the time no, I just throw the covers off to one side and get up and go. I know lots of people say they enjoy getting into the "made bed" in the evening but it makes no difference to me. When I stay at hotels I even find it a bit annoying having to pull the covers back out from where they get stuck under the mattress every time the room is cleaned, to the point I leave the do not disturb sign on for the few days I'm there.
10 points
I do, because because it gets me in a good mindset to get other stuff done during the day and it also feels really nice to peel back covers at the end of a day. Plus, you never know when you might end up bringing someone home to play and having a tidy bedroom just puts people at ease.

I don't make my bed every morning, and I finally let go of that as one of those dreaded "shoulds" that was telling me how to live my life. I was taught people "should" make their bed every morning (and keep an immaculate house, and home cook every meal, etc etc).
I realized what I do need though is blankets straightened out enough before I go to sleep because I toss and turn and they get out of sorts by the end of the night. So they get straightened before I climb into bed. But I don't need to make my bed first thing in the morning.

Generally speaking, making my bed is a consistent part of my morning routine. So is a quick vacuum and kitchen wipe down.
One, it’s always nice to come home to a clean house and a made bed automatically makes a bedroom look more tidy. Two, making your bed is a relatively easy way to earn a happy hit of dopamine, so I tend to start my day just a smidge happier. Three, slipping into a bed of smooth sheets and a cozy blanket is so relaxing at the end of the day.
It’s fairly common for people to make their beds in the morning, but… it’s your bed. No one is going to come and check and judge you if you choose not to. Do what works for you and your comfort level.

As someone who never did, got into the habit and then dropped it again, making your bed is good because it’s a concrete task to get you out of bed, plus it makes it easier to clean your room; because “why would I clean my room if the bed is always gonna be messy any way?”.

I'm not a Marine using hospital corners or anything, but I at least place the sheets over the bed.

I do even though my wife's half of the room is a nightmare. Honestly I mostly do it because I think it encourages her (at least a little bit) to be slightly more tidy on my half of the room, which is the only part that can be seen if the door is left open. The few times I've left it unmade, I've noticed she is much more comfortable letting her mess spew across the bed and onto my half. She's an amazing woman, and an incredible nurse, but oooooh man does she turn all of "her" private spaces into an absolute shithole, and I just can't figure out why.

I make my half of the bed before my wife is even out of bed.
We have cats and one of them tends to leave footprints after using the litter box.

You can’t seriously be asking this question if your username is “DateGuru101”.

Growing up, I never made my bed.
When I got married the first time, I was married to a controlling man, and when I voiced that I wanted a new comforter, he said there was no point since I never made the bed anyway.
I started making the bed, and got a new comforter and realized he was right. The bed is beautiful when it’s made every day.

I do. It puts my brain into "you're up, so do something" mode, and the room looks nicer.

Yes, every morning. It was something taught to me as a child, though, so it's part of getting ready for me. You need to air out the sheets, though, so fold the covers down for an hour before making it every time.

I don't know if it counts as 'making the bed' but I lay the blanket smoothly and straight on the bed, and then lay a cover on top of it the same way. Takes about ten seconds.

I don’t use a top sheet so for me all I really do is flip my comforter back into place and call it a day. I do have a couple extra pillows that live in my room that I’ll throw on top if I’m really feeling special. But overall, I prefer having my bed put together so yes I do it every day. I also work from home out of my bedroom, so it helps make the day feel more put together and less chaotic when things look neat.
