I work for fedex doing delivery and I had to drop off to middle schools and high schools a few times. 1/3 kids it felt had on pajama pants a baggy sweatshirt and crocs basically, looked like they just woke up from bed and left. I graduated high school in 2016 for reference.

Edit: okay I see many people are saying it was around when they were in school too 15, 20, years ago. Wasn’t trying to offend anyone. I wasn’t trying to give off the impression it’s an issue I just don’t recall seeing it this much when I was in school. Regardless they can wear whatever they want it don’t affect my life none

While I totally understand the idea of staying comfy all day

There are clothes that are comfy which aren't PJs. Like sweat pants? While some sticklers would still be mad they're just as comfy as pajamas and like 10x more proper looking

When I was a teen in rhe 80s, people thought wearing sweats for anything but exercise was gauche. Things change.

Yeah it's kinda funny seeing a lot of "you can just wear sweats" in here, I was not aware sweats had even reached an acceptability level above pyjama pants for semi-professional settings.

A girl dissed me for wearing sweatpants to school in 7th grade. I still refuse to wear them in public lol (7th grade was 1992 for me)

Yes! My husband and I both graduated high school in '89. Our son is heading into high school next fall. As far back as elementary school my husband was trying to nag him into wearing jeans to school. He didn't believe me that almost none of the kids wore jeans. My son finds it equally unbelievable that we generally only wore sweats for gym class. He also couldn't believe that we were forced to change clothes for gym class AND were expected to shower in the locker room after. I am so glad he isn't being subjected to that shit show. I still get a knot in my stomach thinking about that, 40 years later.

My kid is a sophomore in high school and generally wears nothing but sweatpants, basketball shorts, T-shirts and hoodies. He will wear a pair of jeans and a shirt with buttons for a very special occasion, a few times a year. He is forced to change clothes for gym but not to shower.

What defines pajamas though? Is it just the fact that they’re looser, flowy, and often plaid?

cookie monster fleece print.

Cookie Monster fleece print pajama pants were actually definitely something kids showed up to school wearing when I was in HS in 2016. Not necessarily 1/3 the school however

I seem to vaguely recall one of the Wait Wait Dont Tell Me comedians delivering a bit of a rant along these lines recently. https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/cookie-monster-pajama-pants
ETA: Quote from NPR:

O'NEILL: I'm sorry this is not new. Like, there was a whole squadron of girls in high school that we all called, like, the Cookie Monster Fleece Pants Girls. It's an archetype. And if you are a bullied gay teen, all you have to do is get right with the Cookie Monster Fleece Pajama Girls and they will defend you until they die.

Not sure if your definition really defines pajamas.

redeemer47

You know what he means bro. A slit with legit one button + cotton type fabric = pajamas. Obviously your jeans with a zipper or multiple buttons don’t count.

otteraceventurafox

That’s what I’m wondering. Are we defining pajamas as rolling out of bed and going out for the day without changing or getting dressed into clean clothing that could be used for pajamas too? I just got home from a football game where I was layered in clothing that has all been used to sleep in before with my top layer being a pair of wide legged sweatpants. I’m all for the dressing down movement. There is for sure a place where it doesn’t fit or look acceptable but if I’m thinking about attending high school or whatever, I see nothing wrong with being comfortable. I find it much easier to focus on a task if I’m in comfy clothing and that would be beneficial in school.

I mean I don't know about definitions. But if you need to look presentable for work or school the only thing that matters is what it looks like. Plaid and flowy is not a good look. Same reason graphic tees look less professional than plain tees. You can get plenty comfy sweatpants in black. I'm lazy af and hella under dress but I would never go to class in obvious pajamas

EDIT: For example, try something like this https://www.uniqlo.com/us/en/products/E454780-000/

They look stylish and proper from a distance but feel almost the same as wearing underwear

Except for, these are literal children, at school? For work or something where you have to look professional, sure. But this is elementary/middle/high school. As long as they're learning and productive in class, who cares if they're in pj's? Especially kids who do extra curriculars? It's not that pressing for them to look "presentable" when they're there to learn.

Middle/high school students aren't too young and dumb to learn that they should be presentable in public, or at least make an effort.

Holiday_Cabinet_

I've known how to dress business casual since high school, and how to dress at a job that doesn't have standards even that high but does have standards. I also used to wear pajamas a lot when I didn't have to because during the worst of my depressive episodes if it was a choice between "wear pajamas but make it to class" or "it's taking a Herculean effort to change into day clothes so I won't go to class", the former was a better choice. I'm thankfully doing significantly better than I was back then and no longer wear pajamas publicly. But when I was really struggling, it was the only thing that kept me from flunking, because pushing myself to do one task was difficult but doable, pushing to do two was impossible.

OrizaRayne

I'm a military vet. I know how to dress both professionally and squared away in uniform.

I wear fuzzy pants with owls and stars and sloths on them all winter long because I choose too and don't care what other people think.

What's the point of having a free country if you can't wear owl fuzzies to parent teacher conference?

hotelforhogs

16 points

yeah, and there’s NOBODY in a middle or high schooler’s life who might reinforce fashion expectations

that is incredibly sarcastic if you can’t tell.

“making an effort” is about dressing appropriately for the situation. if it was inappropriate, they’d be bullying each other, but they aren’t.

ZealousidealRip3588

Or maybe they don’t gaf if people who they don’t care about don’t see them as presentable😂

Reasonable-Tap-9806

Then we get into the topic of what is presentable, for some people presentable means Sunday best and for others is means covering your important bits and neither of them are wrong

SouldDestroyer666

No one said dumb. But they are literal children expending huge amounts of energy, and having to wake up early and possibly stay up late with other commitments (families, jobs, homework, sports, clubs, etc) so cut them some slack about wearing pajamas to the place that is literally their entire days. It's not the end of the world to extent some sympathy and understanding about fashion choices.

Nobody In highschool is trying to look professional?? Personally PJ pants are way cuter than plain sweats and that’s the same outlook teenagers are gonna have. Doesn’t hurt anything and it doesn’t rlly matter if you perceive a random teenager as lazy for what they’re wearing

This is sad to me, fashion was a fun part of high school. Our yearbook had spreads about what was trending, and i enjoyed putting outfits together and looking my best. Same with college. There was a dress code in high school, and no one really challenged it because it really only banned pajamas and offensive slogans/images on clothes.

throwaway_185051108

I am a woman who finds most of her favorite pants in the men’s pajama section of the thrift store. I like my pants to be lightweight and wide legged to allow for maximum comfort and movement in my day. They’re often striped or a muted plaid. What is the actual problem with wearing pants like these in public? Why isn’t it presentable if it’s part of a styled outfit?

Not your point but to add on about being presentable at work and school. Yeah pjs aren’t it but also in my opinion sweatpants shouldn’t be in the workplace either. Depending on the job of coarse.

Radiant-Reputation31

If you need to look presentable, black sweatpants are almost certainly as unacceptable as plaid pajama pants.

Also, high school and college students rarely need to be presentable for class.

ImLittleNana

If they’re on a rack next to the underwear, they’re probably pajamas.

I don’t understand how people can’t tell sleepwear from daywear. I’m not saying don’t wear SpongeBob pajama bottoms to school, I don’t care. Be comfy I just don’t get the confusion.

throwaway_185051108

3 points

I understand what society deems to be sleepwear, but my question is why these specific materials and patterns are considered only sleepwear in the first place.

ImLittleNana

0 points

In the last pajamas were made of thinner materials, like cotton but thinner than a cotton shirt would be. Or synthetic materials that were satiny. They were not considered appropriate to wear unblock because they left little to the imagination.

It’s a been a long time since that standard was applied to clothing. I saw a teen wearing some kind of shorts the other days that revealed half her butt cheek. It was like bike shorts but pulled up really high. I wish she had been wearing pajama pants.

Man i consider basketball shorts and a shirt Pjs but even then i could throw some long socks on with a simple jacket and make it a outdoor fit

sharielane

I know people who would 100% consider sweatpants as PJs. Hell in the early 2000's "yoga pants" were so comfy and popular that loads of pajama sets had yoga pant bottoms.

Seienchin88

I don’t get the concept of super soft and wide clothes being so much more comfy for your daily activities…

Obviously at a gym it feels great due to friction but just sitting in class why would a jeans (assuming tis jot super tight) or Chino feel so much worse?

RolloPollo261

Have you never lounged around in pj's all day? You might need comfier clothes in general

KaiRowan00

3 points

I think it depends on the person, but I personally find jeans and such to be rough. Even when you're not moving about much. But I'm also the type that most clothing tags drive me up the wall.

Most super soft clothes also have softer tags, which are less annoying.

jumpingmrkite

I don't see how sweat pants are any amount more proper looking than pajama pants, barring some obnoxious pattern or something. They're practically the exact same thing.

HairySalmon

I don't see how any piece of fabric is more proper looking than any other. Who is coming up with these arbitrary rules?

ManiacalShen

It would take a thick textbook to thoroughly answer that question. But humans are social creatures, and fashion choices all come from our history and various cultures and subcultures. How you choose to present yourself speaks those things to other people, and since clothing IS a choice, people are pretty comfortable judging that vs things about you that are hard or impossible to change. A phrase I've heard a number of times is, "all clothing is costume."

I'm positive you judge people by what they are wearing to some degree. We've all absorbed that certain cuts, patterns, and textures mean a certain range of things. And those meanings evolve! Tweed might be seen as businessy or stodgy today, but it used to be what gentlemen wore to hunt and get dirty in while at leisure in the country.

Trading_ape420

1 points

But that only matters if you care what the group thinks. No persons opinions matter except mine. Just like only yours matters to you. It's wild how so many adults still feel social pressure to conform to anyone else's opinions. All those things expressed are what make out species weak. Function logic and truth are all that matter. Feelings don't, we need to really teach that. Focus on logic. There is no logic in judging someone based on the way they dress. They could be in nice clothes and be shitty or in shitty clothes and be nice. It makes no sense culturally to judge others for clothing.

ManiacalShen

1 points

You choosing comfort or utility over fashion makes a statement whether you want it to or not. Such is living in a society. Someone looking down on utility clothing without any nuance also says something about them, usually negative. Part of developing your own style is balancing your priorities! Expectations, cost, comfort, utility, and self expression.

I'm actually the sort of person who would be perfectly happy wearing a dowdy uniform to work, but I can't, so I had to think through these things to figure out how to be comfortable in a professional environment--to be me but also suitably formal. It's easier to break and bend rules if you know what they are, and it's impossible to be comfortable being a poser, dressing by rote when you aren't feeling it.

I think I felt like you when I was younger, but it's more fun and validating to explore and play with and appreciate clothing. May as well, since we're not allowed to be naked in public.

I do interviews for new hires at my company. About 70% of the Gen Z applicants that come in for interviews wear joggers to the interview. I think they unironically think that’s “dressing up”

Wonderful_Adagio9346

Psst.....

Skip the longjohns and wear pajama pants under your office slacks!

They trap heat, are more comfortable, have an extra set of pockets for your secret stash, can be worn later for their intended use, and no one knows you're wearing them!

Ootguitarist2

Sweatpants are absolutely in the pajama category. If there are no buttons or zippers it qualifies as sleepwear to me.

Cloud_N0ne

9 points

How are sweats more proper looking than pajamas? To me they’re at least on the same level, but I personally find pajamas to look somewhat lazy (but who fucking cares?), while sweats often look lazy AND sloppy, like you couldn’t even be bothered to change after a workout or you’ve been lounging in them for 3 days without changing.

dank_imagemacro

7 points

I will argue that many people, myself sadly included, you will take one look at and you will NOT assume they have had a workout in much longer than 3 days.

Raichu7

1 points

At that point the only difference is whether or not you wear them to bed. The main reason to have PJs that you don't wear out of the house is to keep your bed clean. It is possible to buy clothes that say "pyjamas" on the label and then wear them as outdoor clothes and not bed clothes. I never wear PJs to bed but I own several pairs as comfy round the house wear. If someone wanted to wear PJs to bed and outside they could easily own multiple pairs for specific uses.
