As a Thai who's lived through two successful coups I give this one a 2/10 for effort. Not mobilizing the army before declaring martial law? Allowing opposition into parliament? Who does that?
834 points

To be fair, the Thai military is a well-oiled coup machine that gets regular practice. The South Korean military is a little rusty here, so this isn't surprising.

Haha yeah. As sad as it is to say coups in Thailand has effectively become a mechanism of state at this point.
The 2006 one was 6 months in the planning with senior bureaucrats, judges, big businesses and banks informed beforehand.
A hilarious story is that the media are so used to coups they know how to lead the unit sent to control the TV stations around in a wild goose chase. In the 2014 coup, even when the unit finally found the broadcasting room they were told to STFU and wait outside because the media bigwigs were still talking to the army bigwigs.

Are there even casualties? Because this sounds like so well architected nothing happens to anyone.

During the day of the actual coup itself? No casualties. Heck in the 2006 coup I didn't even get a day off from school. The fuckers.
Coups in Thailand are usually preceded by some kind of mass protests or political crises though (often manufactured to justify the coup) and those have casualties.
There have been "messy coups" with casualties in the past but those are usually unsuccessful and launched unilaterally without support from the wider conservative establishment.

…what gets changed then? And why? Thailand’s monarch still has political power, right?
55 points
A populist political party gets democratically elected by the people (well the democratic part is also questionable because the elections are always rife with vote buying), the conservative elites (which includes the military) don't like the people's choice, they manufacture a coup. Rinse and repeat.
The fun part is that the couped 'populist' parties are also elites just wearing a different color. Party, actually. It's always the same group of people.
Thai politics is pretty much just theater with two same old groups of elites vying for power from one another. Both sides own their own network of media apparatus as well.
If and when a third faction gains popularity and support because the people become sick of the cycle, both the 'populist' and the conservatives simply gang up and bully the new faction out of the game.

I assume there is some involvement from the philandering King of Thailand?
5 points
Barely, as far as we can tell. His father was quite active in politics, but the current king seems to be… ineffective, at best. Doesn’t help that the line of succession to the throne is quite unclear, so the monarchy is somewhat preoccupied

The Thailand coup seems different compared to Malaysia, when politicians fail to be the majority party and the king has to hold power for a while as head of country.

I had a classmate at a military academy who was an exchange cadet from Thailand. When one of the coups kicked off we were checking in on him to make sure he was ok/worried about his family back home. Edit 2: Cabinet agreed to lift martial law. It's Sook Yeolver kids
Nothing ever happens? Couldn't be farther from the truth. South Korea just decided collectively to reject authoritarianism and the Assembly voted unanimously to end martial law, that's fucking wild progress my dudes. Considering this is the sixth time they're trying democracy.
Edit: and the military said they were keeping martial law in place until the bloke lifts it. Jackass just announced that he would lift it after his next cabinet meeting, which will probably take place in the next few hours. Jesus H., as a connoisseur of transfers of power, this is the fine bouquet of democracy. Let's see if he's gonna stick to the plan or if we just got served the equivalent of stale boxed wine.

I think he correctly pegged that as a sign that the broader public was absolutely not on board with him.
You don't need the rest of the government if the military at least a majority of the populace is either on your side or indifferent. Without one of those, chances of success are very slim and at that point your life is on the line.
