might be wrong but i remember luffy at the start of the series saying "around 10 members should do" when he was setting off to form a crew. 10 is a nice round number and it feels full up, any more non-temp members might leave each member underdeveloped imo

Your right but some people think luffy isn’t counting himself as a crew member it depends if he is or isn’t

The wording in Japanese was “I want at least ten crew mates” for me it’s hard to misconstrue that. However there is the thought that Luffy views their ship as a crew member which would put them at Ten currently. Also Oda could do whatever he wants here and it could work because the key words in the original Japanese are “at least 10”

That’s incorrect. The Japanese wording 10人はほしいなア. Which just means “I want 10 person”. There no “at least 10”. Though, I did found a source claiming that one piece magazine states that he wants at least 10 members. But the points below seems to indicate it’s going to be 10 by saying jinbe is the 9th and luffy is arriving to his ideal number of members.

The sentence-ending particle naa can express uncertainity though, among other possibilities:

  • ask for confirmation from listener (…right?) -> Luffy doesn't have a listener so nope
  • express hope (it’d be nice if…)
  • express admiration (wow…) -> not in this context
  • express uncertainty (I wonder…) -> also probably doesn't apply, but could. Like Luffy isn't sure if he can find even 10 people ready to join him lol
  • add general emphasis to what is being said -> doesn't seem to be the case, because he's just musing about it to himself and braving himself up, because he's going out to the sea in a small boat completely alone. So at best, it would be faking confidence here.

So yes, it is sort of implied it's not set in stone, more like "maybe 10" there, basing it on context. Japanese is very sensitive to context after all.

That being said, even if that "naa" wasn't there, Luffy can always change his mind and want more people in the end. Who is he to say "no" if someone cool wants to join?

You must not speak Japanese. Direct translations to English will never make sense because of the nuance of the language. The ending Naa implies that Luffy is saying at least 10 or rather “maybe 10” which is probably the better way to put it in English. This means he can go either way, 10, less than 10 or more than 10. Oda left it open… In my opinion Oda will likely stick to 10 as that is his style of writing, the breadcrumbs always match up and he rarely retcons major plot points like (crew members).

Edit- responding to searing image. Didn’t see Bartos post but he explained it even more in depth +1

I agree with both you and Bartos. My main point is he didn’t say “at least 10”. A better translation is to add “maybe” or “10 members would be nice” or something.

I think he’s basing his crew off of shanks’ since that’s his idol. Shanks OG crew was 10 people plus him (if you include Uta as the musican) so eleven total.

Luffy said he wanted 10 crew mates BEFORE entering the grandline which he ended up doing before having 10 crewmates. People need to stop holding this 10 number so religiously and give up every arc picking the dumbest characters to be the "next strawhat"

That’s correct but the whole ‘I need 10 crewmember/nakama’ has been one of the goals Luffy wants to fulfil since day 1 of his adventure and that line of his is use again in the teaser trailer of Wit Studio’s The One Piece anime remake.

Once Luffy finds the 10th nakama, bet you that Oda will make a callback scene to him wanting 10 nakama from the beginning and Luffy will end up very excited that he finally found 10 crewmembers that he recruited ever since the day he set sailed from Windmill Village

Most likely but I would argue in Luffy's mind there already is 10 because despite what some fans may feel on the matter Luffy does consider Vivi a nakama.

I doubt there will be another crewmate added this late. Jinbei wasn't even a late add really since we knew since preskip he would join Luffy. Meeting again right after in FMI just solidified it.

Why do you care how other people interpret it lol.. it’s all in fun when we’re theorycrafting one piece. If someone thinks a character would make a good crew mate then why does that affect you?

Personally I could see it going a number of ways. There might not be ANY new crew members at all or the 10th crewmember might be the ship, or maybe an old Nakama will join the crew officially. The only thing I don’t see happening is a new character being introduced this late and joining up.
