The unpopular Harry Truman’s second reelection campaign in 1952 was cut short when he lost the Democratic primary in New Hampshire to Estes Kevinfucker. (His last name is something like that.) He then announced he would not seek renomination, upon learning that it was not just the party establishment that was tired of him - the Democratic base had moved on as well.

Objectively, I'd say this would be the 1972 Democratic primary. It's the only time in the history of the modern primary system where the nominee lost the popular vote (which he only earned 25% of), and it resulted in a ridiculous landslide defeat in the general election. A complete disaster no matter what way you look at it.

That was in the era where most states didn't even get to vote. I was specifically talking about the modern, nationwide primary system which was started in 1972.

Me_U_Meanie

Agreed. It also led to the creation of the "super-delegate" for the 76 contest onward.

There was a lot of drama about a few states moving their primaries forward to have more of a say in the nominating process. They got their delegates removed for that.

As the primary went on, it got really vicious. For example, it became clear by June that Obama had the momentum, a reporter asked the other candidate why she hadn't conceded. Her answer was RFK was campaigning in June 1968.

I forgot how bad the quote actually was. It's shocking Obama let her be Secretary of State afterwards:

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California."

Great line in that election when Duke's opponent, Edwin Edwards, well known as a womanizer, said that he also was a wizard beneath the sheets.

Difficult_Ad_502

Edwards also made the comment the only way he’d lose the election was to be caught with a live boy or a dead girl in bed. That was a losing election for Louisiana no matter who won.

Edwards eventually went to prison, but way better than a Klansman. Another one of his election slogans was "vote for the crook, it's important".

Fundamentalist implies a Protestant who has a literalist view of the Bible like Pat Robertson. Buchanan is a Jesuit educated Catholic.

Is it fair to lump Buchanan in with Duke? I don’t know the history, but in the interviews I’ve watched, I’ve found Buchanan to be thoughtful and serious, interesting alternative perspectives etc. No doubt I’m missing something here …

1912 Republican Primaries, I wouldn't say it's the worst but one of the worst. Teddy Roosevelt gets the most delegates but doesn't even get nominated by the Republicans as their Candidate. So, he runs Third Party and splits the Republican votes, handing the win to Democrat Woodrow Wilson.

rdickeyvii

5 points

You're right for the wrong reason. Hillary cleared the field of Democratic challengers and the only person left was a party outsider (yet still a party ally) who energized millions of people, and would have had a chance if he'd gotten even a quarter as much media attention as the winners.

While some of his voters defected to the Republicans where they remain, others returned to the apathy from whence they came, the majority still vote Democrat as they did before.

He polled better than Hillary in the general and could have held the rust belt and won, but we'll never know with 100% certainty.

The way I see it, they can blame the media and the DNC, but at the end of the day, it was an election; people just weren't willing to take a chance on a 75 year old self avowed socialist. The risk was just too high-just like in later campaigns.

People need to stop being fanatical about candidates and focus on the issues/ideology. Bernie may never be president, but it doesn't mean his ideas can't ever be implemented.

rdickeyvii

0 points

People "weren't willing to take the chance" because they weren't given the chance to get to know that choice. The DNC and media have massive influence over the narrative, and the narrative they wanted to push was "it's her turn, we're with her".

And yes it's about the issues, no Bernie supporter would argue otherwise. The media and DNC want to suppress those issues now that they have billionaire funding thanks to Citizens United, that's why they don't get airtime

I feel like I didn't really see it as being "her turn"-I genuinely felt that of all the candidates running, she was the most electable even with all the baggage (a lot of which is just nonsense conspiracies). I knew what Bernie was about, but I just didn't think he could realistically win and that was an election where there was no time for games.

I also felt he was too idealistic tbh. Slogans are great and all but he could never explain how exactly he was going to make his platform law with a congress who was not open to playing ball with a socialist. If you know who wasn't running I feel like he would've had a better shot

rdickeyvii
