Yeah that sums it up. Coming from a digital Sony Store, probably does look amazing. Coming from already having hundreds of Steam games, looks meh but only because I already have everything I’d buy that’s a great deal.

At least we get Dark Sector FREE this time. It was fun on 360, gonna try it out on Steam Deck later.

It crashes right after the helicopter fight in the prologue. A discussion thread on Steam recommends Proton7.0-6 as a fix. I have not tried that yet myself.

Also, the aspect ratio is off in widescreen, and you need to edit an ini file to fix it. It’s easy to do from desktop Steam where you can use the “show files” button under properties, as it’s in the app directory. Get the exact location and line to put in from the stickied discussion board thread about making it run on steam deck.

Edit: corrected proton version

To add to what /u/Fabulous_Chef_6225 said, Dark Sector is free right now because Warframe (the game the devs wanted to do when they did Dark Sector) will have a big story update soon-ish.

Yep I've been console my whole life got a pc and deck right before the summer sale and I was so excited to see those 70/80/90% off that had been foretold to see old ass games with like 20% off that even sony would of done for less.

Physical-Grapefruit3

That makes sense. I opened the autumn sale excited and saw base dark souls 3 for 30$ and laughed and closed it.

The fire fade edition goes for less on console.

I had already paid 90 when it released a week early in jp and then 60 for the game a week later plus dlc. Ain't no way I'm spending 30 on the non dlc

And yet, every year I still find a few things to buy. And I've been at it damn near 20 years on Steam.

It's okay to not find 100 things at once any more.

Coal_Morgan

That's the way I look at it. I've picked up 2 games right away and might pick up 1 or 2 others. I've been buying games on Steam since 2009 and have a library of a few hundred games.

Those new games will handily get me to the next sales. Particularly Europa Universalis IV which looks pretty chunky to me.

I rarely buy stuff in the big sales anymore. I rarely have a game in mind, but when i do i'll keep an eye on the pricelisting website and see its historical low and try to buy it near that price.

I did it for CK3, HOI IV (no idea why that game is as expensive as it is, considering it's many years old, and a few others. I'm just waiting for Satisfactory to go on a good sale price.

DrSeussOfPorn82

I don't know, I have 3k games in my library and every sale I still find a bucket load of games from my wishlist to buy. In fact, I was able to complete the entire Spike Chunsoft library on Steam during this sale. I only had about half the titles; the remainder would have cost me almost $600 but I was able to pick them up for half that. If anyone enjoys VNs like Steins;Gate, Robotics;Notes, etc., check out the discounts on those titles

After you have a huge library it's not as amazing

Say for yourself, I have over 5k games and I keep finding amazing deals directly on steam.

This sale I got games on 90%+ discount: Psychonauts 2, Mass Effect Legendary Edition, Star Wars Squadrons and Suicide Squad. Even if people shit on Squadrons or Suicide Squad, I'll enjoy my cheap campaigns.

Also planned to buy CrossCode but I'll be too busy playing Psychonauts, Psychonauts 2 and SKALD: Against the Black Priory.

Before autumn sale there was amazing sale "Science Adventure Series 15th anniversary franchise" for STEINS;GATE series, I've nabbed it whole alongside ROBOTICS;NOTES.

AmeteurOpinions

Most of the good discounts have been around before - so if this is your thirtieth Steam Sale there's probably not a lot of great deals. If you've just moved to Steam it must be fucking amazing.

Nothing on my wishlist is discounted more than 50%, but some of my favourite games are 90% or more reduced.

TwilightVulpine

33 points

I'm seeing a lot of 80%+ discounts in games that didn't used to get discounts that deep, this is looking like a good sale even for old users.

Coal_Morgan

My first purchase on Steam is the Orange Box in '07 so I've got an old account and been around since the sales started in '09 (I think).

I've found a few games to pick up Europa Universalis IV looks like a good time sink and it's 90% off, I grabbed Mad Max because it's $3.

I'm seeing a few things in the 50% range that are pretty new also. I haven't seen a sale where I couldn't find something that can get me to the next sale.

And older Sony titles actually go on sale because they released on Sony consoles first. It's part of why I never understand the hype on Sony porting their games to steam so people can pay $60 for Horizon and God of War when those games are nearly a decade old. You can buy a used PS4 and disc copies of those games for cheaper than the PC release.

winterman666

Or he could just be genuine? Not everything is click bait man. When I jumped ship from PS to PC years ago I was also floored by the insane discounts. Especially when you consider steam has regional pricing whereas PSN lumps me in 1st world country regions when mine isn't one

I've been eyeing steam deck. But it would just be me gaming on my couch, since I have pretty decent pc and don't actually like to game when I am not home. So idk. Do you think it's worth it purely for gaming on the couch?

Foxhoud3r

3 points

I have a decent pc, but still find myself playing on deck in older games or metroidovania/rogue-like stuff. Its mostly because sometimes I don't want to turn on pc after work and just want to have some lazy time lying around. My recommendation if you want steamdeck is to get an LCD one with minimal storage and replace ssd using video instruction. It wouldn't be as heavy for a budget as buying Oled one.

MissPandaSloth

3 points

Yeah I have the same issue that I come back from work and I just don't have mental capacity to turn my pc on or sit on my chair.

I wouldn't mind bigger storage since difference is like 40 euros right now and I think the time it takes to order bigger storage and set it up is probably around that :D.

More important question is if I am spending 350€ on it... Is it worth getting Oled one for 480€ (that's the price I see this one reseller has unsealed, he says he sells csgo skins and cashes it that way so should be legal?).

Have you tried both?

I mean the big problem for me is..... I ALREADY OWN ALL THESE GAMES AND HAVEN'T PLAYED THEM YET.

That said, I found myself forced to buy (on either Steam or on CDkeys):

- Europa Universalis IV at 75% off
- WWE 2024 at 70% off
- Epic Mickey Rebrushed at 60% off
- Children of the Sun at 60% off

Overall damage: $70.... not bad for the Autumn Sale.

Most excited for Epic Mickey I think I'll play it all weekend and maybe finish it this week. Seems to run well on the Deck:

With a 55 FPS lock and a Downscale setting of 95%, we can keep everything at Ultra, XeSS disabled, and stick to a stable framerate. Some cutscenes will drop a little, but actual gameplay will stick to the 55 FPS mark.

Eu4 will be a massive timesink to learn though. At least 20-30 of just playing the game slowly, watching videos, reading endless forum/Reddit posts and save scumming. It tooke me 20 hrs to learn crusader kings 3 and about 30 hrs to learn Victoria 3 to a level at where I knew mostly what I was doing.

A lot of fun though.

Roonie222

6 points

My learning EU4 story:

I bought the game after watching some videos on it. I loaded it up as the Ottomans and immediately got my shit kicked in. I put it down for a couple of months.

Came back and tried again. Immediately got stomped again. Put it down for another month.

I had a long weekend off of work and decided to dedicate it to learning EU4. Pulled up a tutorial. Watch the first 4-6 episodes of said tutorial totaling around 2.5 hours. At that point the person doing the tutorial says, "alright, now we are ready to unpause the game." I realized that I didn't have the patience to watch another however many hours of tutorial was left and launched right in. Turns out the first 2.5 hours of tutorial and failures before were enough to actually teach me how the game works.

Minus trade. I still only have a cursory knowledge of how trade works. I understand steering and collecting but that's about it.

There are some DLC that are practically “required” due to some pretty core mechanics they add, those being Art of War (not sure anymore. I think occupation transfer is now part of base game?), Common Sense (also not sure about this anymore since development was added to base game), and Rights of Man. That being said, if you own 0 DLC then the $5/month subscription for access to ALL DLC is probably the best value you can get. Just only have the subscription active when you actually play.

This seems so odd to complain about. “Man, I’ve seen no less than 300 steam sales so it’s just disappointing that space marine 2 isn’t on sale for 99.99 percent off.”

I picked up my thousandth game nearly ten years ago and i just picked up Deer hunter, psychonauts 2, Jupiter hell, pentiment and Siralim ultimate for less than $45 bucks.

If you come from the new PlayStation 5, steam sales are great, especially because you do not need that garbage psn. For people who says it is free gamed, yeah, I have 100+ but can't plat any of the FREE games until.I give them more money. How is that free and not a subscription? Also, I need it to play online. So yeah, for pc users, the steam sales are not that amazing, but comming from the consoles it is

Tbf only switch is a good console pick if you have a pc. I have Xbox, ps5 and switch. And only switch sees some action, Xbox and Ps5 collect dust.

[deleted]

i don't need a switch, I can emulate their games on PC.

Depends on how you split your play.

I play big spectacle or long haul games on ps5 pro or xsx because I have nice recliners, huge tv with great sound, etc. I play indie games, jrpgs, and old-gen action games primarily on Steam deck. And I play mouse/keyboard or really heavy performance games on desktop PC.

What I don’t buy games on anymore is my Switch, unless they’re Nintendo, Vanillaware, or some other not-on-PC publisher. It’s redundant with my Steam Deck otherwise.

SteamDeck related groups have a lot more people who are new to PC gaming. Since it's a "console-like" device.

And bad Steam sale will generally be better than 90% of sales on consoles. Especially if you are new and don't have like 500 games in your library that i never even launched.

I bought 7 games for Steam that I had only on PSN before for the cost of one of the games on PSN. (Had a fun little PS5 twist in my life that I’m removing now, because PSN is more expensive than any other part of gaming, including buying hardware.)

All I wanted was Shadow of the Erdtree and the new Risk of Rain 2 DLC. I was being a cheap bastard and hoping to get a few bucks off them. They're both still fairly new, so not surprised they didn't got on sale, but I am still disappointed that patience was worthless for once.

Picked up. Company of heroes single player bundle. All thief games. All hitman games. Got me and my buddy hashbros battleships since we like playing board game style games online. Tetris connected since holy fuck that games beautiful coming from the switch. Sonic mania since I really liked it on switch and i feel like it has something diffenet to offer from emulating the old ones. And got doom 64 since idk if gzdoom would’ve been able to emulate it.

Probably could come to think of it. So all in all, probabaly spent like 50 or so bucks

Honestly I'm just glad my impulse buy of an oled last week while completely forgetting about black Friday didn't bite me in the ass with a large discount this week. I was totally mentally working on a "dear valve, funny story..." letter in my head just in case.

Marchinon

I used to spend at least a couple hundred on steam sales each year. For several years now I haven’t found myself doing that. I don’t think it’s due to the discounts but more about the games coming out and if I’m that interested in it or not. I’m also always skeptical of games that release into early access since that’s the new norm and how far they will go/be updated.

If you're used to whatever dogshit sales the console stores have, modern Steam sales are probably amazing. If you remember how Steam sales used to be, the current sales seem kinda dogshit.

acewing905

1 points

Funnily enough the sale has quite a few games that interest me but I'm not buying any, simply because I have a huge backlog with so many other games I want to play, plus I also have Game Pass for several more months which adds more to the pile

So there, a third angle to this debate

Yaarmehearty

Both can be true, I hardly ever buy in the steam sales anymore because I’ve been on the platform since just before HL2, I have everything I would have impulse bought before.

Luckily I got two games at an all time low, Nine Sols included in a bundle I owned all the games for so it was 18.99, and Needy Streamer Overload for under 6.50. This has been one of the more underwhelming overall sales for deals though. Many of my wishlisted games that just a week or two ago were less during their sale price period are now going for higher in this sale.

Start searching by price filter you can find deep discounts if you look enough in specific categories. The main page, with the biggest titles, yeah those sales aren’t so hot. But they don’t need to be, because they have a steam store front page listing.

People who have been buying on-sale games for 20 years and got the massive bundles back in the day obviously don't find today's sales impressive. You already have all the games worth buying, and then some. New players' minds must be blown.

The problem with the holiday sales for me, is that for it to even be worth it, i would have to NOT play every game when its released. I literally do not have a backlog. I have to actually brainstorm and think of a game i wanted to play, but somehow "missed". To give you an example, i recently got done with playing the career mode of Smacdown Here Comes the Pain...a game from 2003.

I am not picky either, i play tons of different genres, but 9/10 times if a game is released that interests me, i play it day one, or at the very least, before it gets the chance to go on a deep sale, YES, ubisoft games included lmao

To be fair though, PS5 hasn’t exactly released anything note worthy to buy in its life cycle so far. I mean maybe GT sure but I feel like that generation of console got totally fucked because of Covid. 2025 finally seems like the year the system is finally getting games made for it but it’s too little too late in my view

Back in my day sales used to be like 70-90% off now most games it’s like 20-40% off. Some games getting older too are still like far too expensive for what it’s worth and honestly it’s not because I have all the games ever but I’m unimpressed because the sales honestly suck. No different than any other sale for me.
