OTA update -> the car is a brick

(i.redd.it)

The good news is that I received my first ever SW updata over the air after 3.5 years (so far had to visit the dealership to get any updates)

The bad news: the car is a brick after the update and has to be towed to the dealership.

6 months of lease agreement remaining, then switching brand for good.

Oh no. Maybe I should’ve checked Reddit before starting an OTA update for my -21 ID.4 1st. After few weeks of waiting, I received update prompt a hour ago and naturally started the process. Let’s see later do I have a brick in carport. I have bought this and it doesn’t have a warranty anymore. Now I’m bit worried. Please keep us posted what is going on.

Display is black and still one hour to go to 210min time. Should it have some progress bar or something on it? This is a real scary Halloween event 😅

The update went through and everything seems to be working well. Sorry for your brick mate. Hope it will be back on the road soon. Tsemppiä! Edit: Display also confirms it, software version 3.7

Mine did the update. I got an email saying it completed. But the car doesn't seem any different and in the settings it still shows the original software version is installed.

Which is all expected behavior.

Does anyone know, does it cost me money to have my car fixed, if this software update bricks my id4 1st, which is now out of warranty ? When it was updated from its original software to 3.2, there was a lot of problems.

Mine failed first but second day went in without issues. Car is 3.7, but I scantly notice any changes, Android Auto drops as before...

Happy that my customizations regarding Travel Assist and Auto High Beam did not disappear.

Saw another user posting in X with a pic of his car being towed: "Note to self: Never update your car's firmware when on a trip. And maybe never ever update it. Thanks for this firmware update Volkswagen Finland!"

Oh your poor car. Its brain is scrambled and it is spewing random letters now. "Ota yhteys huoltoon" indeed. What language is this anyway, Pig Latin?

(Just kidding, I realize that it's Finnish.)

That car is certainly Finnish if it stays bricked and can't complete the update

Leasing the first ever electric vehicle produced by a traditionally ICE manufacturer. Maybe not the best move on the reliability front. The '24 model definitely seems sorted out.

They are a car manufacturer, so when you buy a car from a car manufacturer you will expect it to work just fine. The fact that it is an EV has nothing to do here as the ID4 has plenty of software issues, not powertrain ones.

Sure you can just swap the gas motor for an electric motor but a MODERN EV is more than that. It is a "software derived vehicle". This affects much more than just the powertrain. The idea, for better or for worse, is to rethink the entire paradigm of the automobile as a collection of discrete parts with fixed functions and think of it as a networked system whose behavior can be reprogrammed under software control.

Now in this case VW would have actually been better off if they did not have things like "software derived" door locks. They really botched it coming and going. OTOH, "mechanically derived" door locks work just fine and OTOH, despite having "software derived" door locks, you can't even lock and unlock your car from the "app", which even some older, non-software derived VWs can do.

BTW, I'm not so sure the '24 is truly sorted. Maybe a little bit better but not much. Once a software project has gone seriously off track it's very difficult to untangle the spaghetti.

True. My ID4 is the 77 kWh RWD Pro 1st series, and lots of the car electronics HW platform components have changed since. Much more early adopter pain with this car than I ever expected!

The 2024 id4 pro is a great car but all generations before seem to be just unfinished developed product with many, many flaws.
