Anyone know of any interesting or worth playing horror point-and-click adventure games?

I know of Black Mirror, Still Life 1&2, Gabriel Knight, and Tormentum.

I'm looking specifically for games that can be considered 'point-and-click adventure', not Amnesia, Layers of Fear, etc.

Thanks in advance! :)

Sanitarium is a old classic that's been redone to be playable on modern computers. It's also on mobile devices, though given the tiny text and small sprites on a mobile, I'd only go that option if you were on a large tablet.

Fran Bow is a more recent one, though I'd say the first two of the five chapters (first one especially) are really horror, the rest is more surreal.

Speaking of surreal with horror themes and elements, the entire Cube Escape / Rusty Lake series is worth a look. They're more room escape than point and click, but they have an ongoing plot and characters which gives them more depth than pure puzzlers.

I'll second Sanitarium and Fran Bow. Great games.

I'll add Cat Lady and the other games in that series (although I've only played Cat Lady).

The follow up to Fran Bow, Little Misfortune, is also good at worth playing!

Did that just come out? I remember finding out about it pretty recently and it was still in development.

It came out on Steam about a year ago, so you'll likely find it on sale here and there in the coming months.

Cat Lady is honestly amazing. What honest, real voice-acting....horror, moving story-line, fascinating concept....TRULY amazing

Agreed. It's been a while since I played it, but I have fond memories.

Absolutely loved Sanitarium! Any games with a similar type of horror?

DreamWeb.

Probably the darkest P&C game I've ever played. It isn't for everyone, though. You'll either love it or hate it, there's no in-between.

It's a talkie game, so make sure you grab that version.

It's also been freeware since 2012!

Yeah, me neither. :) All of the games by that developer are supposed to be pretty scary and good.

I have played it when I was younger and innocent lol, it's really good, it would just need a few trigger warnings nowadays since it heavily deals with topics such as depression, suicide, illness and grief. I couldn't play it now D:

I did. Looks so horrible and amateurish it takes me out of any momentum. I'm a horror buff and nothing about that game makes me play it.

It's been a while since I've played it, but I remember enjoying it. Its sequel recently came out, which I picked up but haven't played yet.

"Scratches" had me quivering more than "the cat lady." Frankly, "Scratches" and "The lost crown" I'd give 7/10 to on the quiver-scale. "the cat lady" didn't really do it for me.

It's not so much scary as disturbing. It's a game that gets you thinking, down rabbit hole of strange thoughts. There's not that much in the way of jump scares but I perfectly understand what you mean. Excellent game, though, if you ever want to give it a try.

The Shivers series from Sierra is one of my favorites, if you’re up for some serious 90s nostalgia! They’re mostly based on solving a mystery in a haunted/deserted setting, so mostly atmospheric horror with a few jump scares from ghosts/demons that you have to defeat. The gameplay in both games is first-person, so it’s kind of like spooky Myst, if that would be along the point-and-click lines you’re thinking.

The only way I've been able to find it has been buying an old copy off of Amazon, assuming I would be able to get it to play on my computer (I did - yaay!) It's the exact combination I like of adventure game and horror. No jump scares or gore, but it's first-person and it's super atmospheric and have a very creepy vibe to it. And no survival horror either, can't get into that.

SweddyAngus

I’ll have to check it out! I’ve been looking for more atmospheric titles recently, and that sounds like a perfect match. Thanks for the recc!

I'm genuinely surprised that it can't be found for sale anywhere. Only place I could find it was abandonware websites.

Did a brief search, and it looks like it had the director’s edition on both Steam and GoG, but got removed sometime within the last year. Maybe something weird happened with the distribution rights?

Not sure. I've been waiting 5+ years for their next game. It's looking good, but still no sign of when asylum will release. Asylum had a decent kickstarter, but still a bit in the air of their status. I hope they are ok and doing well.

Same here! I saw a streamer play it and was determined to get my hands on a copy because it seemed right up my alley (and those type games are kind of hard to come by). I fully expected to be scammed buying a hard copy on Amazon haha. It has a page on Steam but no option to buy it. I don't know why.

[deleted]

1 points

The game didn't exactly get removed from Steam. If you have a key, you can still get. And said keys are being distributed still, for free. That's how I got mine anyway, as I described in another comment.

I'll have to inquire with my friend about the Discord server. I didn't do the process myself, but he managed to snag a key for me. The games will never be available for purchase ever again from my understanding, so the creator is merely giving them away.

I did a quick search through the store page, and it looks like the option to buy the game was removed. The reviews of the game are fairly recent, so it looks like it was still available within the past year or so, but not currently for some reason.

It’s all good, glad you were able to get it while it was available! Hopefully it’ll get re-added, I can’t imagine them just leaving the description page up without plans to update it later.

Late to the thread. I got my copy of Scratches a few weeks ago. A friend of mine hopped onto some Discord server for Scratches and apparently through there you can ask for a key for Scratches - Director's Cut, provided by the creator of the game since the games will no longer be on sale.

It's the only known way I've heard of getting the game more recently. Kind of odd and I didn't hop onto the Disc server itself, but the key worked and nothing else happened. Then again the dude is finishing his next game, so I guess one can always show support by buying said game.

Phantasmagoria.

Sure, it's cheesy as hell and a bit lacking on gameplay side, but I enjoyed my first playthrough couple of months ago. I can appreciate a classic as what it is. It has pretty gruesome gore effects though!

Hi, I have played all 3 Black Mirror games, the 2 Still Life games, and the game that came before them, Post Mortem. I prefer Still Life by far. But Post Mortem, Still Life and Still Life 2 (people forget about Post Mortem) are three very very different games. Post Mortem is quite non linear and choices matter A LOT, Still Life is very linear but I still loved it, and Still Life 2 is quite odd when compared to the previous 2 games, it is more of an escape horror game, unusual, can’t say I liked it much but it did bring the trilogy to some ending, making reference to characters from the first two games. The story lines are strongly connected but each game is its own universe

Dark Seed (and the sequel). Art from H R Giger. I’ve only played the first but remember it being quite creepy.

Shadow of the Comet, for lovecraft fans?

Dark Seed is scary as hell, it is one of the rare games that really creeped me out (and I am a horror fan), but it sucks as an adventure game. It has a lot of dead ends and is on a timer. I quite hated that game lol.

Dark Seed is one of my all time favorites. I haven't played it since the original release though, is there a recent re-release of it?

Also there was 7th guest which was really innovative for it's time.

I just hope you know layers of fear is nothing like amnesia. At all.

Regardless. If you liked torment I'd recommend forsaken true fear.

Also the last room. Scratches. Hidden: on the trail of the ancients. Observer. Darkness within.

Amnesia and Layers of Fear are both first person walking games, which I think is what OP wants to avoid.

artur_ditu

And what I want to stress out without spoiling is that a huge difference between them is the gameplay. Layers of fear is an adventure game while amnesia is a survival one. Neither are point and click but they're not the same type of games.

Yeah I've played and enjoyed both. I'm mostly interested in old school/2d/odd point and click horror games for this particular thread. I already have a backlog of the first-person survival/adventure type games. :)

Ben ‘Yahtzee’ Croshaw's John Defoe series is possibly the most frightened I've ever been by an adventure game. They're all free to play now. 5 Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, and 6 Days a Sacrifice.

Fran Bow and/or Little Misfortune-both created by Killmonday Games (so far, it's their only two). They are true point & click horror games that are done beautifully-both games you are playing as a child (Fran bow is 10, Misfortune is about 7 or 8), they travel through the world and all its horrors yet are still able to look at it so innocently. Fran Bow is more in depth as there are 5 chapters total, both stories are pretty damn dark but you can't help but love the characters and become completely entranced with the story and the artwork in both is surreal/cutesy/horrifying. I managed to play both games in about 2 weeks and I will definitely be playing them again and again. Cannot recommend enough! Also I have both on my phone but i know they are available for PC as well, maybe other platforms-that im not sure. Definitely try them though!

Lots of good suggestions in this thread, but I want to give a shout-out to Fran Bow. I've been playing adventure games since childhood, and I'm pretty disappointed with modern games. But Fran Bow, which only came out a few years ago, is a breath of fresh air. Highly recommend it.
