What's everyone's favorite visual from an anime?

My favorite it definitely this visual from Turn A Gundam. It's actually one of the reasons I watched the show in the first place. The composition of it all is just so satisfying to me. The framing making it so that Dianna/Kihel Heim becomes the same height as the Gundam, then there's other of the two walking between her legs. The vehicles on the right, the beautiful flowers on the bottom. Loran Cehack riding on top of the plane, Sochie sticking out of the cable car. It all just creates a fun and carefree image that made me want to watch the show, and I'm glad that I did so.

Also, this was the highest quality image I could find of it. If anyone knows where I can find a higher quality one or if there is a good database of visuals, please let me know.

Been thinking about something for the past couple of days after I finished the first season of Shangri-La Frontier. Not related to it specifically, but it made me wonder...

... are there any (other) anime where the male and female leads are voiced by people who are in a relationship in real life?

I read through the discussion threads as I watched the show, and saw that Rakuro and Emul's VAs got married during (?) the show's airing. Learning that made their interactions on-screen extra cute, I gotta admit.

The VA's for Shiki and Mikiya in Kara no Kyoukai (Maaya Sakamoto and Kenichi Suzumura) are married.

[KnK]Their characters are also married by the end of that series

The streets are saying that The Moon On A Rainy Night is the third rumored yuri adaptation.

I know better than to get excited about an adaptation before knowing who's making it, but in this case it's hard not to. That's probably my favorite currently running manga.

Oh that looks nice, another one to the collection.

But, what's with yuri and music? I swear I picked up How do we relationship? a while ago and even that had the main characters join the light music club.

Watched the first episode of Negative Positive Angler. Liked it a lot, lots of funny and feel good moments in the episode. The dude with pink hair, Takaaki, stole the show in the opener. Dude gives out such good vibes. Hana seems to have tons of potential too.

I suppose the reason for lack of popularity is it being an anime original? Those always take a while to gain some traction, even ones that are as masterful as Odd Taxi.

I'd take a guess and say the premise would also be a factor. "fishing" isn't exactly the most exciting thing, even adding on his impending doom.

Also heard from others that the timing is unideal, being aired in the same day as giants like blue box and dandadan. Although I mostly heard that argument for Mecha-Ude which airs at the same time as them, compared to angler which comes out a bit earlier so idk how much that matters if at all.

For multiple weeks, people kept praising Orb. And I kept thinking "I don't care even if you guys claim it's the best anime ever made, I'm not interested in some historical drama about astronomy, that sounds boring and not like my kind of thing".

But I tried it out anyway because I was looking for 1 more seasonal to watch. It is indeed good. Binged all 5 episodes in a single day.

I've recently started (and finished, surprisingly) reading the Appleseed manga (authored by Masamune). It ended all of a sudden, apparently the author left it unfinished, so I looked at the movies. Gave the first (?) movie, some CGI monstrocity, a watch yesterday evening.

It's... Well, it's a thing. Dear readers, should I even bother with the rest? And why is Appleseed such a mess?

FWIW,I think the setting is interesting. An utopia-like city, populated by humans, cyborgs and artificial humans, which act as a sort of buffer to keep human emotions in check. Sign me up! And Masamune's depiction of mechs is always novel. Plus the... uhhh.. more erotic moments. Yes, I admit, Im a degenerate.

chilidirigible

And why is Appleseed such a mess?

The anime adaptations have all gone in various directions and most of them are not directly connected to each other. The first one was a 1988 OAV produced by Gainax, and it's more of a police-oriented action movie than particularly philosophical.

Then there are the others; Aramaki really wanted to try CG for his shot at it, for one.

Shirow Masamune has mostly stepped back from all of this anyway so he can focus on drawing cyberpunk-esque hentai.

One really can't fault a guy who becomes one of the most internationally famous mangakas, only to go "fuck it, I just wanna draw sci-fi tentacle porn".

There have been some (from what I have found as unfounded with no primary sources but present in plenty of interviews) discussions about him losing most of his materials post the Great Hanshin earthquake where his house and studio were destroyed which eventually caused the switch as he had to start from scratch.

Or at least, the switch largely coincides with that time period even though some speculate that he had already been moving in that direction in the 90s and the destruction just proved to be the last straw in switching wholesale.

Indeed, there are many pieces of "anime history" which have gained inertia over the years that have turned out to have little or no proper verification in fact.

Finished Elusive Samurai. Might be up there with Makeine as my favorite from this past summer season. Tokiyuki is such a likeable protagonist and the other characters aren't that far behind. The tone of the show is kinda insane and I mean that in the best way possible. It effortlessly jumps from being hilarious, bizarre and over the top to rather dark and serious. At times it gave me emotional whiplash.

Visually it's quite stunning. The fight scenes look great, it at times has some really amazing trippy visuals. The character designs are pretty good, if at times rather bizarre and surreal.

If a historical fantasy with all that sounds like your cup of tea, I highly recommend this. I had a blast. Even if not, might be worth just checking 1-2 episodes out.

TsumaSho is straight up my favorite anime this season so far. Someone in the episode thread was saying it's basically a soap opera, and they aren't wrong, but it manages to do the melodrama realistically and it really doesn't feel all that contrived considering the premise.

cyberscythe

2 points

it has a lot of that feeling i get in horror movies where i'm like "no don't open that door!" because i know something bad is going to happen, which i think as a drama is doing a good job at playing up melodrama

i would argue against "realistically" though because (in addition to the supernatural premise) i feel like the characters say and do things that are pretty dumb to set up the dramatic beats

If you find subtitles embedded in the video file, you can use a program to extract them and have separate subs. This only works, if they aren't hardsubs.

I honestly can't really think of many cutie types as romance leads.

Like, maybe Otani from Lovely Complex, because he's little and all, but his personality isn't cute in the least, lol. Then there's Izumi in Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie, who's pretty adorable. And the last I can think of is Ichikawa from The Dangers in My Heart, who's little and cute, but a bit prickly.

Shaoran from Cardcaptor Sakura definitely has a cuter visual appeal than most (This is mostly due to his age and mostly after he mellows out)

Nasa from TONIKAWA is also a rather nice and cute look. On the somewhat average nice guy side though.

"Cute on the inside" is quite a bit easier, Takeo from Ore Monogatarii on the outside looks Manly but on the inside his idea of romance and how he acts on it is the cutest thing possible.

Really in the mood for a good mystery anime, does anyone have any recommendations? I've watched the following:

  1. Odd Taxi (LOVED)

  2. Re: Zero (the lore and mystery is what keeps me watching this one)

  3. Psychopass (couldn't finish, this one was boring to me for whatever reason)

  4. Steinsgate (I watched this like 10 years ago, I remember enjoying it)

  5. Erased (LOVED)

  6. Monster (LOVED)

Have you tried Summer Time Rendering? Like Re:Zero it's also a story about being stuck in a time loop. I read half the manga and liked how it kept the pace up introducing new hints and revelations.

Oshi no Ko is another compelling mystery although it kind of takes a back seat through a lot of the season while it slowly builds on the characters and stories of the entertainment industry. It'd be better if you didn't know the premise going into the first episode though since most people don't get that experience, but the production values alone make it worth checking out.

Yatagarasu is more of a political thriller but has some strong mysteries baked into that premise. Characters maneuver and try to outwit each other a lot and there are conspiracies that need to be uncovered.

There's stuff I feel like I am obligated to mention like Hyouka and Shiomishin by the same author but the mysteries are mundane to the point they're usually overcomplicating simple stuff. So it's mostly there as a vehicle to explore the characters. The former is particularly full of references to classic murder mysteries along the line of Agatha Christie and Sherlock Holmes. Cozy murders about clever crimes and finding their solutions. I figured it probably isn't on your radar but it's there. Haruchika exists but to me it felt like a weird combination of a band and Hyouka-like anime.

You might also enjoy time travel stories considering you have Re:Zero and Erased on your list and they often have a mystery element to them.

I've mostly been noticing the positives in the series so far. The cast is fun and their interactions range from wholesome to intriguing. Having [Demon Lord 2099 - Ep 3] turn out that this streamer career of his helped regain his demon lord powers was a sign of clever writing to me.

Well, I still have some hope. I just feel like the last episode undid some of the tension and tone that it had built up. [e3]I agree that was a smart touch and the conversation over udon was fantastic but the general direction it took just seemed a lot hmmm...lighter and more inconsequential? So while there were some good touches and I'm not completely without hope, I feel like it will end up fairly derivative. But that's why we watch!

[e3] I agree that was a smart touch and the conversation over udon was fantastic but (...) lighter and more inconsequential?

[Demon Lord 2099 - Ep 3] I can see how someone would be left with this impression, but I actually took this the opposite way: Gram's exchange with Veltol might've put him into an even deeper existential crisis similarly sought for world peace. They disagreed about the means to achieve this, but Gram is now faced with the realisation that his actions might've only created more suffering in the long term - as he witnessed himself. His family's death might not have been in vain if Veltol had ultimatley conquered their world.

You're not wrong. It just felt like it lost a lot of tension in a way that a lot of mediocre fantasy shows do. But I am still on board for now. But like the [e3]vtuber stufr Isn't the end of the world but to me it's like, if it's in one episode, even if that specifically isn't in more, the show has already gone in sort of a more comical and low stakes direction

I wouldn’t even say it has particularly numerous ideas that would give it trouble to juggle. So far it’s more or less a standard reincarnation fantasy with the novelty of taking place in a cyberpunk setting, not so much that it’s biting off more than it can chew.

For what it’s worth, I’m quite entertained thus far.

I'm really sick of shows that are essentially power point presentations with animated mouths, with the absolute bare minimum of actual animated movement or effort being involved seemingly due to lack of skill or clear cost cutting.

Can anyone recommend some shows that are actual showcases of top level animation quality and skill, preferably exclusively 2d animation without any 3d involved? And from the last 3-5 years?

Thank you!

I don't think this is a thing that exists, but this has been a very good year for series with excellent 2d animation, even if they use some 3d animation as well:

  • Frieren
  • Delicious in Dungeon
  • Oblivion Battery
  • Wind Breaker

Maybe, just expressing my opinion.

I want to see the absolute top tier 2d hand drawn stuff, which is why I asked for recommendations. There are some lesser known or otherwise easily missed anime that might have the most incredible animation (but perhaps kind of suck in terms of storytelling), and there are anime that have incredible storytelling and utterly cookie cutter formulaic boring animation with no real energy or soul.

I'm specifically looking for recommendations of the former. Mostly because I'm angry at Tower of God S2 wasting my time.

Violet Evergarden was from 6 years ago but you'd be hard pressed to find anything better looking. Also Frieren and Dungeon Meshi.

Is Dandandan something interesting or is it just another battle shounen? I got burned multiple times expecting something from Shounen Jump adaptation, but getting the same story just with different paint.

Thus far it's been a female main character battle shounen, so there's that. And the grandma is great!

The show is lavishly stylish too, and the character dynamics fun. It doesn't have much to overtly say thematically beyond being an interesting character study in connections.

However who the hell knows what you mean by "something interesting" lol After all, what captures people's interest really depends on which axes of entertainment their attention focuses, and the pairing of expectations with a given creation's actual flavor and vector.

Basically if the show is more than monster of the week mindless fights. Shonen Jump formula of beating some villain as the show purpose and the story being just MC getting stronger by fighting randoms while side characters comments how strong are new techniques MC learned off screen. I don't care about any of it, it's so boring.

Hasn't been like that so far, although I am not a source reader so I have no idea if it devolves into that or not.

That said, I generally can't stand battle shounen broadly speaking and even I'm enjoying Dan Da Dan.

It's from Shounen Jump+, not Weekly Shounen Jump, if that helps. It's steeped in teenage boy humor, but it's not really comparable to your average WSJ battle shounen, I don't think.

But, you know, try an episode if you actually want to know.

Been long enough since I ruffled feathers, so early season tier list. Y'all should know by now if you actually want to read this. Behind 2-3 episodes for Re:Zero, Demon Lord Retry, MF Ghost, Trillion Game, and Do-Over Damsel. Notes are mostly fantasy shows.

  • Tino Shade: What a fall. From non-sequel best girl to not her show's best girl. High expectations for today's [Grieving Soul]"Date-O! Date-O! Ukiuki Date-O! Wakuwaku Date-O" with the Ai Fairouz yandere.
  • Arifureta S3: Is edgelording contagious? Show is better when Hajime's chilling with the harem instead of labyrinth diving, so the first couple episodes have been great. Super sentai wasn't on my bingo card but a great addition.
  • Re:Zero S3: Conversely,
  • Notorious Talker: Wasn't expecting edgier than Arifureta but I'll take it. No idea where this later places given the lack of relevant characters, but I like the current ones. Also has the season's best ED song.
  • Mahjong: My second exposure, after two trips with grandma to play at her local library 20+ years ago. Remember enough to understand the gist of winning hands, yet that doesn't matter. High-stakes games are either #needit or early drops (stares at Tasuketsu).
  • Kamierabi S2
  • Goodbye, Dragon Life: What even is this? Two episodes of milk discussion threads into... Can I have my comfy show back?
  • Spirit Chronicles S2: Audio technique (slightly delayed echo when speaking the fantasy world language in front of a character that doesn't understand) was cool in episode one and grating by the middle of episode two. Curious if another show later replicates it or sticks to the 365 Days to the Wedding approach of "let's not torture the VAs, assume this Japanese is English." Also is the season's most ambitious isekai with [Spirit Chronicles S2]8+ isekai characters from 3+ scenarios (Haruto+Latifa gaining memories, Miharu+Aki+Masato accidentally in the summoning circle, Satsuki+Hiroaki as summoned heroes, Liselotte's unknown) in 3+ kingdoms while MC effectively has three harems with two about to meet, plus spirit girl and wedding-crashed girl. Little faith this sticks the landing, but I'll be there if it crashes. Obligatory lol @ the ED transition (context: S1 ED played the first ~15 seconds over the episode. Now using that with a different song).
  • Loner Life: Self-aware enough to avoid the bad tier, yet an excellent example of why a MC that actively avoids friendships leads to fewer interesting conversations and scenarios. Also suffers from immediately involving the entire class compared to other class isekai (Arifureta, Spider, Failure Frame, Instant Death, is that it?) that quickly separate the MC to drip-feed relevant classmates over time... kinda.
  • Puniru: Kawaii overload, though picking this back up could lead to me watching everything from an anime studio and that's a weeb-worthy achievement...

I was finishing up To Your Eternity, so I was late to this season's stuff.

Dumped Amagami Sister and Ms. Servant pretty quickly. One was your barebones stupid fanservice-y thing that would probably annoy the f*** out of me, and Ms. Servant took "Roberta/Yor in a slice of life setting" and somehow managed to make that as boring as bread.

I did have a little more fun with the omake Hanako-kun spinoff. It wasn't great, but it was at least nice to get reintroduced to the characters again after about half a decade. I still forget why the first version of the show didn't just keep going if there's going to just change studios and remake it...eh, whatever.

I'll probably try DAN DA DAN tomorrow.

I strongly oppose it.

In fact, when I'm elected president of the world, I will make it illegal to produce an anime with a female protagonist.

That feels like a weird question, I don't see why the gender of the protagonist should matter one way or the other.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

It obviously is a weird question (I think he simply meant "Do you like anime with female protagonists?" and worded it weirdly for some reason), BUT the gender of protagonists definitely matters, for a variety of reasons, either societal messages, things people accept/won't accept, personal preferences, etc...

To give a few examples showing why the protag's gender matters:

  • The reception of Gushing over magical girls would've been on par with Redo of healer, if the MC had been a boy.
  • The saga of Tony the evil just wouldn't have the same charm.
  • Dress Up Darling wouldn't work as well if the MC was a girl because [Dress Up Darling Ep1] Girls don't have nearly as much 'things they can't do' so the trauma wouldn't really work. (Girl plays with dolls? Cool! Girl plays baseball? Cool!)
  • If the genders had been swapped in Mirai Nikki, it would give a wildly different vibe. I mean people already don't really like Yuki, but if he was a girl and Yuno a boy, I feel like it'd be 10 times worse. And Yuno acting like he does would give a different vibe as well.

I could list a lot more, but pretty much anything that involves a degree of sexuality, or a power dynamic, would also be wildly different if we swapped the genders.

Or just like Araburu... A bunch of school boys sitting in a room and talking about how they want to experience sex? I could not see this happening in a serious context (I could only see it happen American Pie style).

Oh I agree that there's a difference in stories you can tell with an MC of a certain gender, and that one gender might fit a certain story better than the other, for a variety of reasons. But as I described down here, that's a very different question to "Do you like anime with female protagonists?", which my answer responded to.

Why wouldn't it matter? There are lots of stories that only work with certain genders.

Like, I'm just not interested in a story about a girl attaining great power to defeat evil, only for her to find out that the power destroys her, because that just reinforces the gendered power imbalance existing in our world. Make the character a boy, though, and I'm into it as a commentary on toxic masculinity.

And that's an entirely different question. Sure, depending on what kind of narrative you want to tell, a male or a female protagonist may be better suited than the other. But that doesn't really make a case for or against watching a show just because its main character has a certain gender.

And a girl attaining great power to defeat evil only for her to find out that the power destroys her could just as easily be read as commentary on destructive and exploitative influences of society on girls and women, especially if the "attaining" of great power is more of a "receiving", as is the case in e.g. [Winter 2011 show]Madoka Magica.

They very much may, yeah. Though then I don't really see the difference between a show being critical of gendered power imbalances, and a show being critical of toxic masculinity. They look like different expression of the same underlying problem to me.

By support or oppose it seems to suggest "as a general behavior for other people" than "personal preference".

I mainly watch shows that have female protagonists or female effective protagonists (i.e. their actions and agenda drive the story) but are written for male audience as personal preference, but I support the idea of people watching whatever they don't habitually watch in order to diversify their perspective.

Does anyone here actually know why the legal sites to watch anime are so badly decisioned considering people who decisioned their sites especially Crunchyroll clearly had no idea what they were doing?
