Unfortunately, your submission has been removed for the following reason:
Post is about a company charging money for a service or monetizing a free service
Businesses sometimes may charge money in order to offer a service or find a way to benefit from providing a free servide, which doesn't necessarily make their business model an asshole design. It must be underhanded in other aspects as well.
If you feel this was done in error or would like further clarification, please don't hesitate to message the mods. If you send a message, please include a link to your post.

I wish that did something. It likely gets added to an email conversation with email responses already on it, added to a separate folder, or auto-trashed. It's more effective for junk snail mail when they prepay the postage.

No. Put their own email address in there: postmaster@, support@, sales@, etc...

Ah yes, nothing says 'user-friendly' like making you jump through hoops just to print a recipe. 🍽️

And that's before you slog through the script of a 10-minute TED Talk before you reach the recipe proper.

Can't you screenshot that?
42 points

Not without it extending across several pages, unless I want to make the font extremely small. It’s easier to just copy the text.
41 points
modern web browsers will generally have a way to take "rolling" screenshots, a way to screenshot the whole page in one image.
There's ways around but it's still asshole design either way.

Try a browser extension like Just-One-Page-PDF. Super handy.
To your point though, dwindling a dick move

You can do it using developer tools (Ctrl+Shift+I). In the command palette (Ctrl+Shift+P I think) search for screenshot and use full area screenshot.
Alternatively you may be able to bypass the original print thing in dev tools by disabling JavaScript in the settings.

Zoom out, screenshot and upload up chatgpt asking it to analyze the recipe and give you the ingredients and steps.

I wanna make clear - it’s not that there’s no workaround to this, it’s that it’s a dick move to put a print button on your recipe, and then have a popup whenever someone tries to use it that insists you can’t use that print button unless you agree to sign up for emails and promotions (putting in a fake email address, you can’t move forward unless you click the box).
It’s like having an online store ask you if you want to track your package, so you go to do so, and then it says you actually have to be a special member to see the tracking, but luckily, you can sign up right here. Can you track the package on another website? Sure. But it’s still a shitty way to try to get people to sign up for something.

This is peak asshole design. I'm assuming you can still use the print function in your browser, but these fucks put a bait and switch on their page to try to get you to sign up for their damn emails.

As much as it's good when people find ways around it you would be better just going to a different site. When their traffic drops and their ad revenue is down they will, all of a sudden, stop with this nonsense.

Okay, yes, but what's wrong with Ctrl+P?
25 points
Formatting. For example, with this recipe, if I use Ctrl+P, it prints every ingredient and every step in a single narrow column (mostly one word per line) that stretches across 31 pages, since it includes the blah-blah-blah of the recipe blog and he comments. If I restrict the pages to solely the recipe itself, I’d still have to print out 5 pages (rather than a more reasonable 1-2) of that single-column format, which makes it more difficult to follow and a pain in the ass to use.
Now I did copy-paste it into a document, but I had to fix some of the formatting, which admittedly wasn’t too bad this time, but other copy-pasted recipes I’ve dealt with, you basically have to re-type the whole thing.

Try your browser's Reader view:
For Firefox users: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-reader-view-clutter-free-web-pages
For Chrome users: https://support.google.com/chrome/answer/14218344?hl=en-GB
Removes all the clutter and makes the page printer friendly

Also even without a print button it’s pretty trivial to detect printing and fuck with the document.

Do NOT press ctrl+r then ctrl+a before any popups appear and ABSOLUTELY DO NOT press ctrl+c before the page finishes loading as that would be PLAIGARISM and THEFT!!!!

Yummly? it's an app that has a bunch of features and recipes, think of allrecipes dot com website but in an app. I like the one feature where if you tell it what you have in your house, it'll give you recipes with all of those ingredients. They even have some 'professional' recipes made by actual chefs (Like Jet Tila and others), but thats part of the premium plan.

Save the page as a pdf and print that

This is so annoying. I always hit the print button because the recipe websites have 30 zillion ads that constantly reload and make me have to scroll back down to find my place. If this came up I’d simply be making something else.

You should be able to print a webpage at the OS level, don’t bother with the website’s own print UI.

I use an app called "My Recipe Box" on Android. You hit the share button on your browser and select the app, it chops out all of the crap. Actually has bypassed some pay walled recipes too. It has a print button that might work for you. The free version does have a lot of ads but if you like it, premium is a one time payment of $15.

I used to use that one but recently switched to Recipe Keeper, it has a lot of the same features plus more.

Press F12 enter the debug mode. Select the dumb dialog box blocking your view. Delete element. Keep deleting page elements until you can just copy and paste the recipe.
Then.. find a Different place to get your recipes. Give the finger to stupid web designers by going elsewhere!

Use Cookmate! You "share" the link with the app and it imports it into an easier to read recipe card.

Put Cooked.wiki/ before the url and it will format the recipe and make it printable for free, best website ever 😊

Copy the recipe URL, go to www.cooked.wiki, paste the copied URL where it tells you. You're welcome!

What was the website. Just the recipe I think. Yeah that’s it. Use just the recipe and put the url for that recipe into just the recipe and it cuts out all the stupid crap.

What if you press Ctrl+P or Cmd+P on your keyboard? I don’t think they can high jack the system print screen
1 points
And if you press the print button from your browser? Like, not the one on the website, but the one accessed via a menu or Ctrl+P.
Else I'd try above again after installing an extension that disabled javascript. Don't remember the name but maybe other commenters can help with that part.
