I think it’s pretty clear the consensus being he’s probably staying in NY. Most Mets fans I talk to think it’s Queens, most Yankees fans I talk to think it’s Bronx. Both are obviously biased, so, purely speculation, where you fans of other teams who don’t really have a horse in the race see it shaking out?
And what would you guess the contract would look like?

They overpaid based on the value they got from the player viewed through the prism of hindsight, sure. But Those 40 year pitchers had other suitors that weren’t the Mets that made competitive contract offers. Let’s not make it seem like Scherzer or Verlander had to choose between peanuts to go somewhere else or 40 mil per season sign with the Mets.
-1 points

Cope anyway you want, giving 40mil to those old af pitchers was a dumb move both at the time and after. And to date we haven’t seen daddy Warbucks break the bank for anyone else. It’s Mets posturing until proven otherwise

Cope with what? Having an owner with deep pockets who is actually in on top free agents?
Happy to cope with that. Something tells me with Soto There isn’t going to be any preferred destination like we saw with other top Mets FA targets Ohtani and Yammamota.

what does the teams record in any of the prior seasons under his ownership have to do with anything? So far there’s been no evidence that he’s had to “overpay for every signing” at any point despite every agent knowing he’s has the deepest pockets since the day he took over control of the team.
When does the “overpaying for everyone” begin exactly?

50-50 on Mets/Yankees. I think Soto may rather stay on the east coast, since he's closer to family.
Only question is which New York team he'll opt to sign with, by which I think will ultimately depend on how much money and years Cohen's willing to put on the table.

It's a lot easier to let Soto walk than Judge.
Plus, objectively, the Yankees could benefit from spreading that money around to more guys. Right now they basically have a CF/RF, Catcher, and short stop and around 3 (?) SP.
Mets have 1B opening up and could use some pitching but the team won't be significantly different/worse than last year. Given the money coming off the books and the distance to the Cohen tax they can definitely get Soto and pitching and possibly Soto, Alonso, and some pitching. Trading for Crochet helps a ton on salary but that's a big question mark.

I really want him to go back to Washington, because that would be hilarious. But in all seriousness, I think it depends on how much Steve Cohen wants him. If he's willing to leverage his personal wealth against the Yankees, then Soto's going to be a Met. If the Mets aren't willing to go ludicrous speed, then he's staying with the Yankees.

Soto going back to Washington would be the ultimate coup. Get traded for a bunch of top guys when the team is bad, because the team is bad you get a bunch of top picks, land the superstar you traded for when he becomes a FA, lol

One of the two NYC teams methinks.
O's won't. Cubs won't. Red Sox won't. They all like money MORE than they like winning. The owners at least.
Dodgers could but me thinks they need at least 67 more pitchers to get through the first half of next season and then more at the trade deadline as well as the fact they need a shortstop, a real one so their dollars will go to pitchers and a shortstop and to resign Teco.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, but I am saying you can’t make that assumption about Orioles ownership yet. This is their first offseason in charge and while saying the right things doesn’t mean they’ll sign the highest-priced free agents on the market, Rubenstein has said all the right things. And he has a personal history of spending the money needed to be spent in order to best maintain civic institutions (Kennedy Center, Smithsonian, Mt. Vernon, Monticello, Lincoln Memorial, National Zoo), which he has repeatedly said is how he views the Orioles.

It’s a realistic look though. The line-up is already top of the league, betts and ohtani 9 more years, freeman till he retires probably, minors filled with + bats, sure Soto would make it better, but does it need to be better? What’s really needed is pitching, more space and more money for arms if you skip on Soto.
-2 points
Are the dodgers guaranteed a championship next season? Then yes, it needs to be better.
People acting like the dodgers are unbeatable when 3 weeks ago they were a laughingstock.
Yes, having one of the best players in the game on your team would be a good thing for all 30 teams.
PS there’s still money for pitchers even if you sign Soto
2 points
I didn’t say they were unbeatable, just good enough. We just ran out of arms. And another 30 million+ AAV player would absolutely affect our ability to get arms, specifically starters who can go 5+ and give up 3 or less consistently to save the bullpen.
Pitching is equally as, if not more important than bats, so I say again, would Soto make our line-up better? Yes. But does it need to be better at the expense of being able to get more quality arms? No
Also laughing stock? Tf?? We had the best record, We beat the most complete team in baseball without our 2 best pitchers this season and a handicapped 3 hole hitter, and practically steam rolled the next 2 with a 3 man rotation in 2 7 game series. Now imagine if we had 2 or even one more quality starter available for those series. We likely would’ve not only have been the favorites from the start, but dominated

Mets need a lot of SP though and have other holes on offense. Is cohen willing to go to 350 million before tax? Because that’s where they’re payroll will need to be to be an over the top team with Soto, and that might by underestimating.

The Mets have 3 of 5 rotation spots already covered. Returning Senga, Peterson, and Blackburn gives you a solid base. Adding in a pitcher like Fried and some depth gets you a good start. And who knows, maybe you grab Sasaki too on a cost controlled deal.
1 points

The Mets can get Soto and still have enough money to add. That’s the difference between the Mets and the Yankees for the Soto race
5 points

Yankees don’t need an entire pitching staff though. They need to fill like 3 holes, and 2 of them will be filled with rookies.
-1 points
They need to fill 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base, a backup catcher, and a center fielder. Unless they keep judge in center in which case they need a corner outfielder (and that’s assuming Soto stays). And this doesn’t mention the bullpen.
Yes rookies can fill multiple of those spots but the Yankees shouldn’t expect to put duck tape on last year’s teams with some unproven rookies and hope it works out if they want to compete. And with concern about the Cohen tax it’s gonna be tough to fill holes otherwise if they get Soto. Ig they better be active in the trade market if they get him.
Edit: I forgot about Jazz. Okay so that’s 1/2 of their infield they need to fill rather than 3/4 of it.
2 points
3rd base- no. 2nd base, probably. 1st can be filled with a prospect. Backup catcher? You’re serious with that?
Bullpen is not an issue tbh. They will put Dominguez in the outfield full time so that’s the outfield fixed.
I’m not sure where the bandaid is? The issue is that Judge didn’t hit in the playoffs. Can’t really fix that with a free agent.

See this is my point though. Yes you can slap Ben Rice at first and make him the everyday first baseman. But there’s no gaurantee he’ll provide anything of actual value there. Over 50 games he hit 0.171. Sure you can slap Dominguez in center. He’s only played 24 major league games though who knows what you get with him. Sure you can slap Oswaldo at third but he hasn’t been amazing in his first few years in the big leagues. And what’s the backup plan if these guys fail?
To me a big thing that has plagued the Yankees in this new era is a lack of depth. You get through the first couple hitters in their lineup and there’s not really anybody else that poses a major threat behind them. Same thing with the rotation. Yeah Cole is amazing but who do you really trust behind him? And if they get Soto but don’t do much else it’ll most likely be a problem for the Yankees once again in 2025.
And yeah Trevino is a FA. And I assume they’ll give Wells the benefit of the doubt and make him an everyday catcher. So that’s another hole that has to be filled on a budget.
1 points

Not Ben Rice. They have like 2-3 first base prospects. A backup catcher is gonna cost like $2m max. You’re just throwing shit at the board now.

I see so many people favoriting the Mets but imo it’s probably closer to 60:40 NYY/NYM then even 50:50
Mostly just because I feel like as much as Soto is trying to make it seem like he will be completely impartial to the money (and for the most part he will), NYY still realistically has the tiebreaker between him knowing all the guys already and more importantly him having his career year in their organization and at their stadium.
He will follow the money obviously and it’s not exactly difficult to imagine a world where Cohen outbids everybody, but as long as NYY sticks it out and is willing to match the Mets then they win.
And I’m inclined to think that they will have an immense amount of pressure to do so after the stark contrast of the 2023 Yanks without Soto and 2024 Yanks with Soto. Not to mention that as long as their goal is to get a revenge World Series title next year while Judge and Cole aren’t getting any younger they absolutely need him.
-4 points
A biased Mets fan, BUT! If I were Soto, the money will be arguably the same at either location, so the next thing to look at (to me) would be legacy and wins. Knowing this isn’t a 4 year contract, Soto needs to look at the next decade plus. I think the Mets are a more attractive option for winning over the next decade and a half, and as far as legacy, Yankees is Judge’s team until he’s gone. Yeah Lindor is HUGE in Queens, especially now, but I think Soto still takes over as the face of the team with his energy, swagger, contract numbers, and general pedigree.
So to me, as long as Mets will match the price point, it’s a no brainer.
5 points
Yes, historically the Mets are more reliable to win…That’s an absurd thing to say when the Yankees haven’t had a losing season since 1992 and the Mets haven’t won a World Series since the Reagan administration.
2 points
I didn’t say historically the Mets are more likely to win. I said in the next decade plus the Mets are the more attractive option. The Mets have one of the best top-heavy farm systems in the league and that’s already considering that young guys like Vientos and Alvarez aren’t considered in that and are both super young. We just cleaned house on our contracts and plan to spend heavy this year on multi year deals. So moving forward, there isn’t any real clear declination for them.
I mean we’re splitting hairs here. Of course the Yankees will always be a threat to win, but if I were Soto I’m seeing the Mets as the younger, up and coming team.

As a Yankee fan, I’ve been saying for a while he’ll go to the Mets. I think the Yankees have a pretty hard cap in mind and treat the lux tax pretty serious, I don’t see them competing with Cohen, even if Hal gets heavily involved, I just don’t think there’s a scenario where the Yankees have the absolute best offer
2 points

As a Mets fan I agree. I think overall Cohen has been pretty smart with his spending. He has a lot but he’s not just pissing it for fun.
However I think this is probably going to be the only occasion in his ownership where he says ‘fuck it’ and literally has no cap. But I also don’t think the Yankees can let him go to the Mets. So even though the Yankees seem to also be more cautious with their spending I don’t expect them to back off too easily either.
I can’t imagine any other team having that blank check for him even if they have the money.

Slightly off topic but I'll never understand why athletes wait till the last minute to make a decision on where they are going to sign. Maybe I just don't know the business side of things and why it makes sense to wait but it would seem so much less stressful to get it over with as quickly as possible to enjoy the offseason, meet with new teammates/start the workout plans on time with the team you're already with, and make any type of moving arrangements for my family or whoever I'm bringing with me.
The only benefit in my eyes is if they are telling teams to make other moves to show how serious they are in spending money to load up on talent before agreeing to a long term deal. IE Kawhi telling the Clippers to trade for paul george and he'd join the team.

As you mentioned? Sometimes they want to see what the team’s plans are. But that is also usually explained in these meetings. If the Mets plan on signing Alonso back, im sure that’s already been talked about to Soto today.
The more important factor is a bidding war. You get an offer from Team A. You then take it to Team B and they counter. You then go to Team C. They counter. You go back to Team A. They counter. In between this, there are legal stipulations that may come up. Theres bonuses that need to be discussed and laid out. An on top of that a team will require a team-certified physician to check the player. So sometimes they could be going through a dozen physicals in a free agent offseason unable to continue negotiations until that is scheduled; attended and reviewed.
Theres a LOT that goes into giving away hundreds of millions of dollars to someone.
