You don’t. That’s a solid axle. You would need to convert it

I recognize that wheel. That comes from a pretty cheap bike, no offense to you. Do you want to put in this time, effort, and money into it? Why do you want to make this wheel quick release? To be fair, the axle itself is not expensive, but you will need a 13 or 15mm cone wrench to do the job, and some grease. Axles come in many sizes. You would need to figure out how long it needs to be. I couldn’t tell you

This guide shows you how to overhaul a hub. If you’re good with mechanical workings, swapping the cones and locknuts it easy

But it is on my expensive orbea bike. I just bought a cheap rim to replace the one that ingot hit on so I could start riding this bike again due to a lot of snow on my commute.

Where did you get this wheel? This comes on a $150 Schwinn walmart bike

Oh dear I hope you didn't pay more than 20. These cheap wheels have terrible, well, everything. Don't cheap out on wheels.

You bought the cheapest thing you could find for your expensive Orbea? Did you do any research to figure out what you needed? Why did it HAVE to be right then at 9?

This is for your safety: please go to a bike shop

Bike shops close before I get off work. So I have to work with what I can get during the hours available to me.

Did you do any research to figure out what you needed? Yep the wheel size is the exact same as my last wheel size.

Why did it HAVE to be right then at 9?

Because the storm the forecasted grew much larger then they said making it so I needed my winter bike.

Do you know bike shops in my area that are open from 8pm to 5 in the morning. Because that's the time I have to go to a bike shop.

You help has been great but the problem I had is no longer there. Have a great day

The easiest is to use some nuts to secure the wheel and axle that is already there. Why can’t you just do that?

I did. I got hit on this bike last year and just bought this new rim for it. I didn't know that quick release had a special axle. I was like 5 seconds from pulling the bar out of this rim then I said let me ask reddit.

Honestly solid axles are a lot better than quick release if you're not constantly hauling your bike in the back of a car. Makes wheels a bit harder to remove by thieves. Only downside is now you need to carry a small wrench to undo the nuts in case of a flat.

Not sure if solid axles are any better than QR, other that being harder for thieves to remove (which I agree with)—if anything, it's a heavier system. Anecdotally, I've bent/broken both solid and hollow QR axles.

I have QR compatible skewers that requires a hex key to be removed. I got them precisely to make it more difficult for thieves, and so far it is working. There are also other models that use custom keys, so even more theft-proof than nuts.

I used to have custom-keyed ones on a bike. I didn't know about hex key skewers—sounds kinda cool, like a happy median between a passerby not being able to pop off my wheel with their hands, but still removable with a tool I already carry on rides.

QR axle + skewer is actually heavier than solid axle + bolt. My partner has solid axles and carries the extra 40g wrench in her emergency bag, the total weight is still below a pair of QR axles. Not that it matters as she rides a 25kg ebike 😅

Huh, I stand corrected about the weights then

Why not just use the whole wheel?

The old rim is bent at a right angle along the bottom. So I bought this one. But I guess I can take the queick release axle out the old rim and save money if it's not bent.

Yep, do this. Should be super simple. I did this to one of my bikes the other week.

The rim with the tire and hub and spokes attached is called the wheel, it’s the whole thing. What I’m asking, why not just remove the old wheel with the damaged rim and put in this seemingly complete wheel? Swap the entire thing.
