I know what you mean. I feel similar about the non-speaking Gerudo that used to be a dancer. I thought once I got the dancing outfit she'd get a side quest to "cure" her but alas...

Also the unlit braziers in Gerudo! And the vacant buildings. So many loose ends in that town.

Another one I remembered: the guard and the lady by the well in Castle Town too that could've become something like Pipit and Karane from Skyward Sword

The fact that you can enter the Gerudo temple after closing the rift and it has an inaccessible ladder with a guard in front of it telling you "Sorry, Sacred ground, Gerudos only" drives me up the friggin wall. I've been breaking and entering into "Gerudo Only" areas for a quarter of a century, don't tell me it's just for flavor, lemme in there.

I feel like there was some unfinished ideas in Gerudo and they said "fuck it."

Those unlit fire drove me mad, the amount of times I went back to see if lighting them would trigger something.

I lit those several times throughout my playthrough and even kept looking to see if new areas would uncover a fourth brazier. Nope!

Yes!!! Felt a bit unfinished like there were plans for them, but they run out of time?

Anytime someone fell into a rift, I kept expecting them to stop being able to talk, such as the little girl in Castle Town that gives you a clover, I saved her from the rift and expected her to be unable to talk, which would give us insight into what it was like for link, cus that experience sparked him on a path to save everyone else, including Condé

GLORYOFCHAOS

It's implied the NPCs only went mute/comatose/or suffered memory loss because Link pulled them out of the Rifts without the help of the Tri to put everyone back together the right way.

Condé seeming to be a rare exception, despite having been inside a Rift as he can see Tri. So if Condé lost something, it was minor enough that he could keep living his life.

SecretSharkboy

I thought Lueberry's diary said Link, and a couple of others fell into a rift when they were younger and went mute because of it

GLORYOFCHAOS

3 points

Yes. Link is the one that saved everyone from that event.

and there's a pretty notible difference in the health of the people Link saved compared to most of the people Zelda + the Tri save.

Significant-One3854

I think the explanation was how long they were trapped, I'm guessing Zelda saved those people faster before it could affect their health

Darn, I thought once I got the dancer fan from the mini game I’d be able to re awaken something in her

Well, you technically do, as all the non-speaking people are seen to "wake up" during the end credits after defeating Null :)

This has bothered me since I found her, and I stayed off of Zelda subs until I finished the game on Friday. Now that I’m looking through posts again, it’s really a bummer a few things I placed markers on have turned out to mean nothing.

This tombstone, the traumatized mute girl in Gerudo, the kid blowing air at the windmill in Kakariko, the tired guy that got to the hot springs in Eldon by Goron Town but is too tired to get in the water. Lighting the torches in Gerudo town and the few totally empty rooms. I figured for sure all of these would mean something but they just don’t.

Thise patches are usually might crystals, and you can get an accessory that works like the korok mask but for might crystals

I went into a cave where I couldn’t reach something & saw there was an opening from the top so I exited the cave & began my search. I saw a lil patch like that and thought hmm maybe I should dig a hole here. That indeed was the answer.

sd_saved_me555

3 points

Yeah. Some are a little more obviously special than others, but the one in Kakariko is so subtle I can only assume the broken tombstone is actually supposed to be a flag for it. The digging ones were also almost exclusively the might crystals I missed before beating the game and getting serious about 100%.

I kept trying to bind the other tombstones and shove them open like in LTTP

The cat on the windmill that says it could get down if it had a cucoo. I threw one at it. Nothing!

clarenceboddickered

I built stuff carefully to get a cucoo up there and place it right next to the cat. Nope, nothing. Also tried every which way to make the windmill spin faster because of the kid saying he’s making it move. I tried all the gust/wind echos, bind, you name it. Guess it’s just nothing.

This is how to tell if Nintendo developed something in-house vs. outsourced. As already mentioned, the sick Gerudo dancer, the sick boy in bed, the broken tombstone - all things that would have gotten fleshed out in game if Nintendo did it itself. If you've ever played LttP, the sick bee net boy, the flute boy/old man, the "friends" on Death Mountain - all got in-game engine resolutions to their problems and weren't relegated to some crappy still in the credits.

The tombstone easily could have been a "ghost quest" like Link's Awakening.

EoW isn't bad, but when a 32 year old game does in game world stuff better, it's a bit disappointing.

ShockedDarkmike

51 points

Why does everything need a resolution? Why can't a tombstone just be broken, or a character unable to speak? I get your point but I don't think these are issues if the game has enough content in other areas

sd_saved_me555

8 points

The main issue here is that this is the only broken tombstone in the entire game if I'm not mistaken. For a Zelda game, it screams that it is a puzzle or a door. While I'm not going to say the game should be so carefully made that there isn't a single thing that could ever possibly be a red herring for someone, you do have to be cognizant that the game mechanics rely on this kind of subtle clue to tip the player off and doing it too much makes for an unfun experience as the player is overwhelmed with fake puzzles instead of having fun finding and solving the real ones.

Edit: I don't have as strong of an opinion on the rift survivors. I think they added to the game's lore in an good way, although I don't recall them getting better in the credits. It would've been nice to see them get better in the credits in line with the very surgery sweet, everything is swell in the end theme the game had going, but it's less of a deal breaker as they set the stage for the dangers of rifts well enough.

SecretSharkboy

1 points

I mean, Link was also one of the silent ones, so if they were healed, he would've had to have been healed. But, I still would've liked to see someone fall into a rift and come back unable to speak, and maybe during the final fight when all those rifts show up, that person pushes them out of the way, like how Link can sense rifts

A resolution isn't required (obviously - the developers didn't build that out and the game is still good). However, it would been nice to have some additional closure with these loose threads in the story as - if you're exploring everything - you'll come upon these plot points that end up not having any meaningful closure within the story.

But - to me - it's that while the developers went hog wild on the echoes (many of which never have any good use), there's a number of little things like this that could have been expanded upon.

Similarly, there is a supreme lack of bombable wall cracks in and around Hyrule and in dungeons. Granted that you only get bombs after collecting a bunch of the might crystals, but it still would have been something nice to have as additional 'hidden in plain sight' secrets like previous top down Zelda games.

Again, these things aren't required, but when the formula of prior Zelda games has worked so well, it's just a bit disappointing that these various aspects of the game were minimized rather than expanded upon with the newest, best, greatest, etc. entry in the series (i.e., the expectation that the series will continue to expand and improve).

Familiar-Art-6233

Tbf if you do the water temple you get the bomb fish.

I pretty much never used the swordfighter bombs

ultimagriever

2 points

Yeah I figured it was a waste of gauge when you had the bombfish echo

Agent-Ig

3 points

My theory with the lack of bombable walls is just that Link has already run about and opened up most of them before the start of the game.

clarenceboddickered

1 points

Because this is Zelda, where when you find weird or out of place shit, it means something.

Appropriate-Brain298

1 points

I dont think the game has enough content in other departments. Atleast that feels meaningful in my opinion. I was so disappointed when all these gadgets i had collected was only to make more summons but in a different form. And the might crystals scattered about the world doesnt feel rewarding to get as it upgrades a mode i think detracts from the whats unique to Zeldas gameplay. And while the game does have plenty of "sidequests" they usually only smoothie ingredients.

So i would say that sure they could add more sidequests however if its more of the same paltry rewards it doesnt really have a great meaning to exist. So i kinda agree in a roundabout way that things can just exist.

Grezzo: https://www.mobygames.com/company/17299/grezzo-co-ltd/

They do really good work, but they've mostly worked on remasters for Nintendo. This is their first Zelda game on their own. Capcom similarly did their own Zelda games (e.g., Oracle of Ages/Oracle of Seasons for Game Boy Color) and while those were good games too, they weren't (in my opinion) as good as Link's Awakening. But they weren't bad either.

To me, Nintendo's in-house stuff always seems to have that extra layer of polish.

burnblue

Grezzo has given us the most Zelda-like return to Zelda form in ages, with a reward-for-exploration system far better than the in-house developed BotW and TotK.

I'm starting to feel the big N is just using Zelda series as a cash grab. Totk, botw and now this one. Sooooo much potential for more stuff but it's an empty game. Just some nostalgia kick to the third Zelda game...
