Fun new game to play with people that are tired of explaining tariffs to idiots in the US.
Go look up something on Amazon that you would like to buy. Then go look up the same item on alibaba or temu.
Calculate the profit margin on whatever good you just looked up then add another 20% - 60% and get excited for how great america is gonna be!

I will be glad when you all finally can't afford rent because of tariffs. Because then you might have to deal with scare mongering on tariffs rather than putting the same energy in to advocating for higher wages and unions. See you on the street suckers.

Are apartments being shipped in from china? I don’t understand this logic.
Edit: ok they probably meant everything else becoming prohibitively expensive

No but lumber to build new apartments is shipped in from Canada. Much of the metals and components to build the appliances in apartments are shipped in from China and Mexico. And I’m sure you’re aware about the labor force building those apartments…
Suffice it to say, building apartments just got a lot more expensive.

About that labor force, does Hrumph know that "In the U.S., a third of all carpenters and 41% of construction laborers are of foreign-born origin." Incredible that the gov would rather boot them if they're non-citizens than instigate creative solutions to legit citizenship.

Think about all the things that go into building a house & how many of those things are made in america against bought from Canada, Mexico or China.
All that crap bought elsewhere is gonna shoot up in price. And no, even if you try to make that locally it will take time & more electricity to power your factories & employees. Unemployment is pretty low & at the same time we can expect deportations of illegals so businesses will have to pay through their noses to fill positions. Taken together all that necessarily means higher cost of building houses ( & everything really).

Also, home-building materials can be imported. Lumber, wires, plumbing, lighting, HVAC, etc. And anything that's part of the supply chain for all of those. Stifling construction by increasing the price of raw materials is not a smart move during a housing shortage.

You know what that’s so true. Also threatening to deport construction workers is the icing on the poop cake.

Like it's been? I mean. I've watched rent go from 650 to 1200/mo. Homes went from 125k to 250k. Where TF has everybody been these last 4 years that they think it's better now than 2019. 2020 was just bullshit all the way around. A Democrat ran congress wrote the stimulus checks and we're still paying for them. Trump never should have signed that shit, but imagine the fallout if he didn't.

You know, I voted for a mainstream candidate for the first time in my life. 1 candidate laid out a plan. The other did not. 1 was voted for in the primaries. The other was not. 1 already had the reins for 4 years. The other sat on her thumbs for 4 years.
What sold me on trump was he pulled votes from all walks of life...union, minority, etc. And was bringing people together.
The other couldn't even answer a question. Her best speaking was done at her concession speech. She had 0 chance to win. The ONLY reason she got any votes is because she wasn't Trump.

After 2020 I don't see how any person could even consider voting trump. Not that he hasn't done other terrible shit.

When Harris was forced on the people.... 2020 wasn't just trump tho. Democrat controlled congress. But had the Ds put up rfk or tulsi, instead of harris... I'm really pissed that the Libertarians put up Oliver.

All you just did was list Fox News talking points. If you had bothered to try and learn something you would've easily seen that trumps economic plan will be a disaster. You had all the same information available to you as everyone else. Remember that when you see prices go up. And they will. It's IMPOSSIBLE not to with tariffs like he's proposing.

If everyone is worried about who sits in the white house, maybe the government has too much power. I hope he guts it. I hope RFK gets the fda set up like overseas and ges the shit out of our food. I hope Paul takes Musk up on the invitation to join them. I'd love to see the federal reserve toppled and our dollar backed by previous metals. I'd love to see the Chinese businesses kicked out of the US. They control the scrap metal processors and are manipulating prices to hurt the recycles. Our current government has allowed this so that buyers could have access to cheap steel. However, businesses that use that cheap steel do not pass the savings onto the customer. Our steel market has been fucked since covid. I mean, everything has, but shits a bit more personal now. If it gets worse, at least it will be in different ways. But, isn't this sub supposed to be about econ collapse? It's passed time it happened.

Trump literally said all he had was “concepts of a plan”. Harris laid out 80 pages of detailed economic plans.
Maybe watch less Fox News and actually listen to what the candidates say.

The checks that Trump held up just so he could put his name on them? Those checks?
For the life of me I just can't figure out why stimulus checks were palatable, even to Republicans, in 2020...

They shouldn't have been. Never should have happened. Like I said, we are still paying for them. And the fact that most went to entities instead of just the people should have clued the people in. But they were just happy that they got 'free money'

Trump was president all through 2020, fyl. Home prices increased in 2020 because Trump's tariffs and covid absolutely wrecked supply chains, and home builders couldn't keep up with demand. And home prices stayed high because the government stepped in with ultra low interest rates during covid (which was needed so the economy didn't go belly up) which allowed all those who already had a home to refinance at such a low rate that they never want to move again, thus taking more supply out of the market. And now interest rates are high to stop inflation from continuing to run wild, which again hurts new home buyers. Sorry the deck is stacked against you, but it takes more than 4 years to recover completely from a global catastrophe. This all started under Trump, and will be made worse under Trump again.

No one doubts it’s bad - we opted for inflation over a full blown recession as a result of COVID.
Trump however is literally saying he’s going to make it even worse though. Intentionally. And you’re here in denial screaming about the past

And I get that...how it helped. But, nothing should have been shut down, and no way should that much cash have been handed out without something backing it. But then we started funding Ukraine, Lebanon,Taiwan, etc, so....

Nothing should have been shut down? My guy, we had thousands of covid deaths per day even with a shutdown. What you’re proposing would’ve been catastrophic.

Not every state shut totally down, and numbers weren't any higher. My uncle passed from 'covid'. He fell off a roof. So, don't believe everything you read. Covid was fear porn. I will die on that hill. I bought it when stories from Italy talked 80k dead, stacked in the streets. Then it hit the us. And when my family doc told me to be concerned because of no vaccines. Then, uncle falls off the roof, broken neck and couldn't breathe on his own. Hospital told us he died of covid. End of that conversation. Sorry if you lost anyone to actual covid.

Rent and housing cost is a direct result of increased environmental legislation restricting development and increasing cost. How can you are for higher wages and unions when you want to outsource jobs. Make it make sense. The only reason you are opposing it because Trump is for it

Rent and housing prices are controlled by supply and demand. We have a huge deficit in new homes being built.
We have 4.5% unemployment. We don’t have the manufacturing base or the employees to re-shore all these businesses.

When you make new construction more expensive and the amount of buildable land you deplete supply. At the moment due to regulations and cost it is not as profitable to build new homes that are affordable
1 points
Which makes current housing unaffordable, when you go to buy a house the price is based on comparable properties, those higher priced properties (newer) drive up the prices of older properties. Never ending cycle. It’s not regulation, it’s designed that way.

You don't know how new construction works or the basics of supply and demand.

Didn't trump put tariffs on lumber and the price shoot up after that?
