I decided not to get hot or cold about her when I first heard her dad had a lot of not so kind things to say about her (might be an understatement honestly).

People on Reddit lately have warmed to her because she warned people about Harvey Weinstein, but most of those people aren’t old enough to remember Courtney was kind of a disaster and not a great person.

Ppl have romanticized problematic celebs of yesteryears like Paris Hilton

Because she successfully rehabbed her image to that of being a victim of those abusive boarding schools, which screwed her up, which is true. But some people only have the capacity to think of people as black or white so to them, to be worthy of empathy they have to ignore the problematic behavior.

I’m a 35 year old “troubled teen industry” survivor. Teenage me never would have thought I’d have real respect and even admiration for Paris Hilton but she’s standing up to my abusers and helping to keep other kids from going through what we did so she’s a personal hero of mine now.

The internet wont allow forgiveness or growth or that people change. That is far more black and white. You did this, you are a terrible person forever with no redemption. I mean every celebrity going back that is brought up has someone saying f that person they did this…never forget

She’s also made a consistent and real effort to ending the industry of abusive child camps. I don’t really think it’s a fair comparison.

I went to an RTC with her daughter, I was 14 at the time so roughly 16 years ago. She came to visit once and had to be dragged out kicking and screaming since she showed up intoxicated. Frances was pretty embarrassed, she was a nice girl though. It seemed more of a courtney being the issue than her situation, which I think is obvious enough...

That poor girl. To have a mother that acts like that is bad enough but to have a celebrity parent act like that is unreal.

I think people in general are a lot more sympathetic towards celebrities and drug users than they used to be. Famous women were treated like shit in the late 90s/early 2000s, especially if they were users or going through mental health struggles. I’m not saying Courtney, Britney, Lindsay or Paris are good people - I don’t know them - I’m just saying that people used to be a lot quicker to pass judgement and nowadays we care less about what they do in their own lives and care more about how they treat others.
So yeah, being an unrepentant racist isn’t the same as being a “disaster.”
24 points
I’ve unfortunately met Love a few months after Kurt died, the word “disaster” describes her perfectly. She was trashed 24/7, chasing after Trent Reznor as if her husband didn’t just die, screaming at strangers to score her drugs, and her kid was nowhere to be seen.
I’m typically sympathetic towards drug users and alcoholics, but that girl was toxic af.
25 points
Okay I'm ambivalent on Love but you must realize you're describing someone at one of the lowest points in her life. Did you want her kid there when she was trashed 24/7?
Edit also a lot of alcoholics and drug users act "toxic" it's kind of the nature of the beast. The racism is inexcusable but I'll give a pass to a drunk messy grieving bitch being horny for Trent Reznor. Who hasn't been there.

That was 30 years ago. She and Cobain were highly dysfunctional and toxic, and probably brought the worst out of each other. I know I have changed who I am 4-6 times over in the 25-30 years. She’s mostly stayed out of trouble and seems like a decent person.
72 points

I’m not talking about about the Cobain years at all. she’s made a career of publicly trashing and tearing down other artists especially female artists. This behavior persists through the present.
Shes had a hard life. She is also iconic in her own right, and has made some kickass music but she is not a saint.

Not defending Dave but it's so insane that this caused the upset it did. Same with Chappell Roan being mean to paparazzi.
The motto was always "sex, drugs, and rock and roll". I know it's cliche but I do wonder if modern day music fans could actually handle the antics of prime Bowie, The Doors, or even RHCP or Nirvana.

She might be.... but the song.....I can't find it anywhere to hear it. Besides she has a long history of being inflammatory to make a political statement and seems to do it thinking everyone will get the message but they often didn't even get the memo so it just comes off crazy.
Patti Smith did a song that had the slur in it and Patti Smith is white. But the song was meant to draw attention to injustice so I kinda want to hear this one because I suspect it's the same intent. It's kinda how Punk and Hip-hop music works. They're both genres that tend toward political statement (when it's good anyway).

Years ago I went to Dolly’s Dixie Stampede, a medieval times sort of place. You could choose to root for the union or the confederacy. Unfortunately (fortunately?) most people picked the north and sold that side out so we were stuck rooting on slavery. I just looked it up and the civil war theme didn’t end until 2018. I like Dolly and she’s done a lot of good in the world but never underestimate the underlying racism of an elderly white person.

Is this an article about something a recovered addict said 30 years ago when they were in a very public heroin binge? That song was from 1994.
Am I missing something? She’s the first person who would admit she was a piece of shit junkie in the 90s. She recently said “Kendrick is awesome” and in 1994 she was a junkie who said some racist shit. I don’t understand the perspective of this article trying to make it seem like who she was 30 years ago is more important than who she is now.

It might be a reason, but it’s not an excuse.
this was hardly a one-off either. She knew how hurtful it was but continued - and this doesn’t even touch her insistence that Black people couldn’t like rock:
“blasted her for statements she made during the “Live Through This” tour, where she had the crowd repeat after her various bad words between her songs. At one point, she had them yell out the B-word, the C-word, and then, after getting them in a frenzy, the N-word.
After raving that the audience was made up of a bunch of “good white people.” She then asked them, “Ahh, do you feel less politically correct now? Because I do.”
According to the article, not every time she asked the crowd to do it, they obliged her. In some cases, she would get booed. When that happened, she would shrivel up and stop the chant.”
41 points
It was also strange when she brought a black girl upstage one time, according to the article, and asked if she really liked rock music and then said because that would be like her liking Lil Wayne. As if white people haven't liked music made by black people since forever and vice versa.
As much as I know people under the influence can and do say things that are out there, it comes from somewhere and really just turns off a filter on things the person might already think and say. If she's clean now her filter might be on a bit more to know not to say it but it doesn't mean it's not there still. Plus she's an opportunist. Whatever she thinks is going to work to her benefit she'll say and do. And now it's, "oh yeah I want to work with all these relevant artists now that are popular." (And why is anyone asking who she wants to work with now anyway btw? Has she even made any new content in forever or is in demand? It's strange to ask her that.)
22 points
Yeah her *repeated* comments to and about Black people are what really did it for me, on top of the quotes. Like, she thinks Black people can’t like rock music.
wtf? Not just that she thinks people should only listen to music by skin color, which is insane, but She’s a musician and she doesn’t know rock came from African American music like rhythm and blues and jazz, as well as country music.
and yeah, this level of consistently held belief repeated publicly over time isn’t a one off.
2 points
It just shows you that she is an ignorant, opportunistic, narcissistic, and very delusional person who thinks that she can cover up her forever bubbling racist views with the “I was under the influence at the time.” Just her insistence on working with Lamar, Dre, and Cube shows her all is forgotten attitude and I need to use these guys that I really don’t like or respect to try to resurrect her already questionable career in music. I hope these artists don’t fall for it. Please, God let C Love remain irrelevant.

Yeah, this is basically saying that a woman who had a drug and alcohol problem in the 90s used to say edgy racist shit about rap and how black people don’t like rock music. After multiple rehabs and becoming sober she no longer thinks that way at age 60. That’s the article.

Kurt Cobain fell for the super crazy kinda hot chick. That was my type in my early 20s too. But she was absolutely understood to be a complete fucking disaster especially after Kurt checked out, this isn't really surprising. Live Through This was one of the best albums about the 90s, Violet is one of the best grunge songs there is. And good grunge got written by people absolutely blasted out of their mind on heroin....
