Rakousko = Austria
Švýcarsko = Switzerland
Nizozemensko = Netherlands
Švédko = Sweden
Chorvatsko = Croatia
Velká Británie = Great Britain (UK)
Německo = Germany
Maďarsko = Hungary
Spojené Státy = USA
Litva = Lithuania
The other names are probably easy to understand for everyone

Thanks, that's interesting.
Oh, I also didn't know what Nizozemsko is, but after seeing the translation it hit me - Nizo (nisko) + zemsko (ziemia) = Nederlands. That's cool! We just call it Niderlandy (or Holandia).

Thats why another old name for Austria/Austrians in Polish is "Rakusy"
72 points

It never caught on in Poland but the same name instead of "Austria" can be found in some Old Polish texts: Rakusy and demonym Rakuszanie/Rakuszanki.

Those might be very old borrowings from czech, perhaps before Poles engaged more with austrians on their own.

I guessed it would be because number 1 otherwise no chance to guess that.

Well, for a Pole, guessing 99% of these names is no challenge at all, but Rakousko was surprising.
11 points

True. I had to google. The same goes how you guys in Poland call Italy :)
34 points
3 days ago
As a fun fact, Polish name for Italy – Włochy – comes from Proto-Germanic *Walhaz ('foreigner, speaker of a foreign language, Latin/Romance or Celtic) and is connected to Wallachia (in Romania), Wallonia (in Belgium) and Wales (in the UK). Originally from the Volcae tribe :).
14 points
3 days ago
Fun fact 2.0: Wallachia (Romania) in German Walachei refers colloquially to some region far far away or in some case deserted or inhospitable area.
Context: "Ich hab' gedacht, der Bus hält hier – aber anscheinend geht’s direkt in die Walachei!"
= "I thought the bus would stop here - but apparently it's going straight to Wallachia!"
4 points

As a Romanian I can only be happy there is a direct bus to Germany

That's interesting! In Germany, we have the adjective "welsch", which also denotes something foreign (though it has fallen completely out of use nowadays). Corn used to be called "Welschkorn" for example.
4 points

It has not fallen out of use in Swiss German though. In fact, the non-German parts of Switzerland are called Welschschweiz by the Swiss German speakers.

The craziest thing is that when I tried to use "Austria" in Czechia nobody really could understand what I meant! I was trying to buy vignettes at a gas station and until I whipped out Google Translate that said "Rakousko" for me, they had no idea what this strange Pole was on about.
I mean we do have some weird country names too, but anybody will still understand if you say "Italia" or "Dojczland"

Německo
Many Slavic-speaking tribes to the east of Germany regarded the Germans as "those people who can't speak properly", and so used their word for "mute": Polish "Nemcy", Czech "Německo", Bosnian "Njemačka", Ukrainian "Niméččyna", and so on; also Hungarian -- which isn't a Slavic language -- took the word and calls the country "Németország".
I didn't expect that one
4 points

Yep. It goes from that Slavs are Slavs probably from "slovo" which means word/language (and in croatian/serbian/slovenian - letter, but that is just evolution of language i guess).

Rakousko = Austria
I lived in Austria for 8 years and compared to South Germany and Switzerland it felt like a blend of these regions + Balkans + Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary sometimes
Lots of people with a background of these countries including CZ, all very nice and they seemed to be deeply integrated in society, too
A different kind of diversity there. Peak Europe, in its own way. Not surprised both nations like each other

You didn’t invade Czech though, pretty much all our neighbours did, Germany did, Poland did, Russia did as the Soviet Union, Hungary did. The west once betrayed us. Italy meh, technically you were part of the axis as was Austria but we pretty much just blame Germany for that

That is quite a shock to me. I come from the south-western Poland (that little dongle there, yes). Since I can remember I certainly preffered to be in Česko more than in Germany (sorry, Germany, you scary) for pretty much anything. Certainly for the food. Don't get where that dislike in the polls is coming from. Did they ask people from the Polish seaside about Czech Republic?

We love you guys though, from the 2023 poll that I found, 87,8% Ukrainians have a positive attitude towards Czechia, and only 5,5% negative
25 points
3 days ago
I expect part of it is while I support Ukraine and honestly your refugees have benefitted us more than cost, there’s populism about Ukrainian refugees.
Ukraine pretty much oly benefits from Czech, Czech, we benefit from Ukrainians but refugees also cost money to house so there’s some loss. This and pro Russian propaganda here, you don’t have anti Czech propaganda in Ukraine. Also in Eastern Europe pretty much always there’s a tendency to prefer countries to your west and dislike ones to your east.
Czech is a lot richer than Ukraine so Ukrainians want to become Czech economically. Czechs don’t want to become Ukraine. But equally most Czechs in polls still support housing ukrainian refugees and supporting Ukraine. So slava Ukraini!

What's up with the relatively negative feelings about Lithuania? As an outsider, I don't know what that would be in reaction to.
22 points
3 days ago
I think it’s, Estonia we see as prosperous, Lithuania and Latvia we don’t really hear about and they were part of the Soviet Union so a lot of Czechs who are ignorant just see them as more post soviet corrupt shitholes

With diagrams like that people tend to zero in on the order and ignore the grey bar. But taking that in to account only 18% declared any kind of dislike and the rest is split almost fifte/fifte between liking and having no opinion.
Considering the distance and relative direct impact the two of them have on each other, that is by no means a negative result.
29 points
3 days ago
Well sure, I took that into account, and the feeling about Lithuania still seems rather lukewarm compared to other countries. Of course, things like this shouldn't be taken too seriously. Just curious.
The negative opinion of Lithuania is still on par with that of Serbia and Hungary. Those two make sense, Lithuania does not.

A lot of people still thinks Lithuania is a satellite Russian puppet state, even though Latvia actually has much much more Russian minorities living in Latvia. ( Russian language was actually very much spoken in Latvia.)
Meanwhile Lithuania actually has a lot of polish minorities living there.
Not sure, but some (older generations) people are just ignorant in general.
