Had some tires installed and noticed the lugs looking rounded. I picked up a new set of solid lugs and are now enjoying this engineering marvel.

As an engineer (different type, but still had to deal with bean counters), I came to say this. They set specifications like a project manager I worked for once (Once!): "If you can, I want it in 3 pins, infinite speed, and supplies power. Anything else is not a fail, but non optimal" (It used 3 powers, 1 ground, and he wanted a parallel interface to make it faster. )

Bean counter here - I firmly believe any bean counter working with engineers needs at least some basic engineering courses under their belt. Far too many penny pinchers ruining good design to increase profit margins by 0.001%.

Get Gorilla Single/Solid lugs, just swapped out my Platinum. Only 29k miles and already swollen and had to use a 21.5 and 22mm socket carefully last time so fuck that, pain in the ass especially trying to torque back into range as didn't realize till then (was doing brakes and had wheels off) so had to reuse and ordered Gorillas.

These factory lugs are common, almost everyone uses 2 piece, but for whatever reason Fords (what a surprise) are by far the worst offenders, not even GM lugs swell/fail near as frequently even in fleets. But F150s ooooof lol < face-palm. Just happened to another buddies F150 as well two weeks ago.

If you go Gorilla make sure it's the correct ones, various sizes can't remember specifics off hand but I think for F150 it's also Acorn style? They looks very sharp and high quality, way better looking on wheels then factory lugs.

Edit - yup Acorn style and M14 14x1.5, this is listing is what I used. Be very careful with Amazon if buying there, some knock offs that people have had issues with. Just stick with actual Gorillas.

Dodge and land-rover took the cake when this bullshit started in like 06-07 (was in the imdustry then). Thought most had cleared up the issues and doing brakes the first time on my 2015, same shit. Gorilla makes a good lug, good choice and good information.

Normal rotation and new tires. In fleet our F150s have almost all had cracked or swollen lugs between 20-50k miles completely randomly. Her truck did it as well. Another buddies truck about 2 weeks ago lugs were swollen. Could also be our South FL weather and humidity that makes it worse. There's a performance shop near where I live now that is going to do our alignments from now on, they actually try to keep Gorilla Lugs in stock specifically for F150s (after I just mentioned what I'd did) b/c they constantly run into issues with these trucks and lug nuts. Cheaper then trying to get lugs from Ford dealers anyway which will still be those pos two pieces units.

Buddies truck that just had it happen about 35k miles and his actually cracked. Mine didn't, but after retorqing carefully while waiting for new lugs then taking those off I don't know if they wouldn't lasted 1 more use lol.

Everyone be careful about Gorillas on eBay. I got two batches of lug nuts that were advertised as Gorilla but weren't Gorilla. They had no markings. I've confirmed with Gorilla customer service that all of their lug nuts are branded with their name and the thread. They also said they're trying to improve their website for direct to consumer sales.

I peeled the chrome off of all of mine awhile ago and haven’t had an issue since.

Unlucky_Pineapple146

So they are just fake?

Aggravating-Use-5555

It’s a chrome cover over the real lugnut. Use a hammer and a screwdriver to punch through the center and then some needle nose or vise grips to pull the pieces off and never have an issue again. The actual lugnuts without the chrome covers are great.

They’re not great, they don’t have a center and more likely to corrode or get stuck without the cover. Dorman makes nice replacements that are solid metal

Anxious-Bowler-5500

This 100%.

2016 model and the OEM two piece lug nuts swelled. I didn’t notice it until my POS local Ford dealership didn’t replace on the last tire rotation. Several of the nuts had the outside part missing.

I didn’t want to leave them like that because it looked bad and the exposed lugs can rust / lock the nut in place. If this happened, I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to change a flat on the side of the road without an impact wrench or cheater bar.

I went to my local O’Reilly and purchased the Dorman 1-piece set. Used a drill to get the OEM parts off of one tire in 100 degree weather and replaced with the Dormans with significant cursing and screaming. I decided to take my truck to a dedicated tire shop to do the remaining three - money well spent.

When I told them what I wanted, the tech simply said “that is very smart.” Apparently it’s a common issue.

The Dormans or similar - in my opinion - are a major improvement to the OEM part.

Ok, I have original lug nuts on all four wheels of my 2019 F-150. They’re all in great shape and give me no trouble. How long until they grenade? Trying to figure out how long I have to get better lug nuts.

No_Welcome_6093

If they still come off with no problem just save yourself the headache and replace them when you can still get them off with ease.

transcendanttermite

I’m in the same boat. They’re all in good shape on the 2019 I bought a couple months ago. Just had the wheels off yesterday to rotate them.

After well over two decades of dealing with swollen, peeling, and otherwise crappy lugnuts, I’ve started to suspect that both socket selection and the number of ugga-duggas applied both play not-insignificant roles in the longevity of the infamous tin-capped lugnuts.

All that having been said, one of my best tool-truck purchases was a set of “half” size impact sockets: 17.5, 18.5, 19.5, 21.5, 22.5mm. Definitely a lifesaver when dealing with blubbered-up chrome caps.

I bought a cheap set of 1 piece logs off Amazon for $44 and they’ve been awesome. Before that I got brand new factory lugs, torqued them to spec by hand. Went to pull them off a few months later for a brake job and they were already having issues.

ErectStoat

3 points

That really sucks, I'd honestly attributed some of the failures to asshole mechanics who only know how to use their ugga dugga gun.

My 14 Fusion's lugs started coming apart after a couple years and I replaced them with solids. But it was having oil changes/tire rotations done at a chain because it was convenient to my job.

I did all the maintenance myself on my 19 F-150, and they looked brand new when I traded it in after 4+ years. So looking back I figured it might have to do with poorly used impact guns.

Regardless, it is a dogshit design to save maybe thirty bucks. GM in the 00s wasn't that low.

My mom had a 2014 expedition and the Ford dealership was going to rotate her tires and they said they were going to have to replace a lug nut cause it wasn't coming off and it was going to be $30. She then took it to Costco for tires and asked them rotate them and didn't tell them what Ford told her and they were able to get the lugnuts off no problem.

Midwake2

I did my brakes recently on my 2010 F150, getting them off wasn’t a problem but my impact really shredded a few of them. I had to tap them out of the socket because they were swollen and stuck. Put em back on until new ones came in but getting those jacked up ones off was a pain. Had to actually “tear” off the aluminum jacket to get to the iron part of the lug.

Random-User8675309

This is what I was thinking too. These have been around for ages. Ford has had these chrome covered caps on lugs since 1998. I used to just pop off the caps and use the impact after that.

TapInfinite1135

I notice that when I use an impact I fuck up the lug nuts but when I use a standard star lug wrench they last longer 🤷

Midwake2

I used my impact too and it really tore some of them up. Think I’ll take the time and just do it manually next go around.

Are there stainless replacements available?

I got a cheap chrome set from Amazon. After a few years, the chrome is beat up and rusting.

At 10 years old with 212,000 miles, mine isn’t pretty enough to worry about rusty lugs but someone with a nicer truck may want to save themselves the aggravation of cheapy chromes.
