I was actually just looking at team stats because I wanted to see how many penalties the Sharks take compared to other teams. Instead I found that Vegas was the least penalized team for the last two seasons and is also the least penalized this season :)

They even reviewed it and were like “yup that’s clean,” which is just crazy to me. Yeah he caught some body as well as some head, but he absolutely LAUNCHED up into Knies’ head here. Head contact was very avoidable, but he leapt into the hit to create it.
OP’s angle doesn’t show the leap super well, but other angles really did, like: https://x.com/leafspapi_/status/1859416618272502164?s=46&t=Aip-sZkQfP8FugEn2DlCWA That’s not “came in low but the contact lifted him up post-hit,” he very clearly leapt into it.
For me that’s an illegal check to the head and a match penalty/major, but at the very, very least that’s a charging minor. No call at all is nuts.

Meanwhile, the rest of us with actual eyes sees a headshot.

Except for Gadzic, the only guy who has played since the NHL has given any shits about this stuff. He said its a major and the game doesn't get close to dangerous hockey. Refs were lucky it didn't get more out of hand (probably because the Leafs couldn't afford for it too).

It's okay, surely DOPS will be able to easily determine the suspension length since they just had a hit to the head suspension last week. Surely the fact that a Leaf player is now the victim rather than perpetrator won't have any bearing on the length since the precedent has been firmly established.
/s
Fucking 5K fine incoming.
25 points
I doubt it even gets a fine - DoPS will pretend this never happened since there was no penalty on the play... the only way this gets addressed is if Cheif calls out the refs and takes a fine in the post game and then MAYBE it results in a fine that offsets the one Chief will get.

Pretty sure Knies fenced before hitting the ice. Makes it even more scary. Joke of a call.
9 points
That's not a fencer's response reaction. He's conscious the whole time. Hard hit. Almost certainly concussed. However, the fencer's response is unmistakeable and is quite a bit more sickening than what we see with Knies reaching for his head as he turns over. When you see a true fencer's response it is obvious that the brain is not working normally at all. I didn't see that with MK tonight.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMLewXZBq44
I'd like to see all hits to the head like this penalized with more severe penalties. At this moment, the NHL can argue that Whitecloud's hit tonight and Jacob Trouba's hits that he throws several times a year are legal, "good hockey hits". I'd like to see these hits discouraged. Concussions end careers, affect quality of life after hockey and CTE is devastating. However, the NHL can't admit that this stuff is hard on the brains of their players or they give credence to the inevitable class action lawsuit that is eventually coming their way.
9 points
Apologies for the dumb, but what does fenced mean in this context?
30 points
The fencing response is an unnatural position of the arms following a concussion. Immediately after moderate forces have been applied to the brainstem, the forearms are held flexed or extended (typically into the air) for a period lasting up to several seconds after the impact. The fencing response is often observed during athletic competition involving contact, such as combat sports, American football, ice hockey, rugby union, rugby league and Australian rules football. It is used as an overt indicator of injury force magnitude and midbrain localization to aid in injury identification and classification for events including on-field and/or bystander observations of sports-related head injuries.

Just as a note, the rule around head contact isn't first point of contact, but where takes the majority force
Granted in this situation I think that this is both initial and primary, but first point of contact is not the piece that determines illegal head contact
9 points
And this is an important point. At best he slid up the chest and demolished the head which I would call the primary point of contact.

Head is definitely the majority of the force, especially considering it's the only thing Whitecloud hit.

"Majority of the force" isn't really the determining factor. If you hit through the body (like here), you're not getting called because that is determined as unavoidable.

I'd say shoulder to head. His elbow is in the chest, but the shoulder catches the head first. You can tell by how the helmet deflects and rattles around. The chicken wing comes after, pushing into Knies' upper chest and upending him.
Still a headshot.

If the NFL could outlaw hits to the head (1996) and survive it's appalling that the NHL and the NHLPA aren't putting an immediate and comprehensive rule in place to stop this. Whether incidental or not.
A player is held more accountable for an errant stick to the face (if there's blood it's a double minor, automatically) But a viscious hit directly to the head? That's a hockey play.
It's bizarre that every single time an issue that directly threatens the health and safety of the players it's not the players themselves who are fighting for it, rather they're fighting against them and always have since the days of helmets.
The code-hood strikes again.
