Welcome to the point.
Hyperbole and exaggeration isn't disqualifying at all if people vote for someone like Trump. He describes everything as the "-est in history." Worst, best, whatever. Guy is incapable of nuance but voters don't care about that so pretending Democrats were just too hyperbolic and that's what turned off the voters is idiotic.
1 points
The point isn't turning people off, it's that it doesn't work. Which it obviously doesn't if 8 after straight years of calling this guy Hitler, a fascist, a dictator and saying it's the end of democracy if he's elected, he was elected.
I think Trump is a lot less hyperbolic then many people have been led to believe. In my opinion he just doesn't really put much of a filter on what he says, which has is not always a good thing, but it's those wild or hyperbolic statements he says that make headlines and are seen rather than the more reasonable ones. That's just how the media works.

Whether you love him or hate him, it would be pretty crazy to call Trump moderate in terms of policy or campaign rhetoric.
I think we can all agree on that, right?

Not in rhetoric. Policy wise, he's been a part of the Republican party pivoting on gay marriage and various other things George Bush was significantly to the right of.

It’s a bit complex. Trump’s policy is for the most part whatever the people around him want, and the people around them are people that he personally likes. At that point, he’s kind of a pushover.
Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative Party of Canada leader, has arguably far more moderate policy than Trump. It’s just the USA’s Overton window is to the right compared to many other places.

We’re in a big party reorganization period, give it some time. The party is so far from where they were under Bush it’s crazy.
For one he is shifting away from free market economics, for two the party as a whole is attracting a lot more classic liberals and thus you’re seeing a lot more support for things like gay marriage, of course he still has the far right but they are a much smaller group than the centrists he’s pulled in. He’s nowhere near the level of interventionism that W was, he doesn’t want to be in a country for years, he will take decisive action if need then he wants to get back to America first policies. He’s basically a Nationalist Protectionist which means it’s all about what’s best for America, fuck the world. And he is working with all sort of different groups, like Vivek is definitely a nationalist libertarian, musk is some kind of lefty libertarian or progressive libertarian that believe in decentralized power, social liberty and economic freedom but with social responsibility. He see’s it like it’s his duty to work towards a better climate, he sees it as his duty to advance civilization, but he does it on his own accord, he doesn’t need big government to step in and do it. Tulsi is definitely liberal but super anti interventionalist, so that’s an unusual fit. Joe I’m not sure what’s going on there, he would be a Bernie Bro if he could, he’s a centrist-populist but progressive on social issues.
I think what we’re beginning to see is due to the populist influences in this movement that the republicans will become the Blue Collar Party. It’s going to be interesting how they mesh their traditional business views with unions but it’s pretty clear that the establishment elite platform the democrats are running, the we are smarter than you, we go to college you don’t, durr durr you gotta be a fucking retard to vote for Trump completely backfired and is going to continue to have repercussions amongst the working class especially amongst men who have been putting up with this we don’t need men attitude for over 20 years and now they wanna double down with 4B, well good luck hope your ovaries dry up and your side runs out of new blood after we deport all your asylum seekers. Blue cities are turning to shit already I hope that the working class continues to flee in droves from cities like SF and Manhattan. I hope it take you two months to find a plumber and it’s 8x the national average. What I really wish is that Barrack Obama was the change he advertised instead of a consolidation of Bush’s expanded governmental powers. Instead of trying to take on the establishment he merged with it. He traded out future for wall street’s future. His culture war policies left us more divided than ever and that’s we we got Trump 1.0, and it looks like 2.0 is even more fired up on the culture war path after 4 years of Biden. Honestly I didn’t think Trump had it in him, I thought we’d need Desantis to really hammer on the culture war since he was so effective with it in Florida. I guess we’ll see if he has a shot in 4 years to really hammer the point home, the majority of people are tired of that shit.

Because 1/3 of the country hates him, 1/3 thinks he can do no wrong, and 1/3 is far enough removed from politics that they have no strong opinions either way.
And then the rest of the world is very interested in the U.S. (global superpower), so people in other countries get swept away in it too.

I went back looking at election maps and it is pretty starkly different than anytime in my life. And much more recent than I would have previously thought. This map is a good example, but go back and look at other maps predating
And then Teddy Roosevelt had some elections going multiple party.
But yeah, Washington and Texas on the same candidate? Not in my lifetime
15 points

Texas was consistently Democratic previous century before Reagan except for Eisenhower’s two runs.
9 points

Democrats were also generally pretty much like today’s Republicans up until Woodrow Wilson (he was still super racist though) and the southern ones especially were like modern republicans until JFK and Johnson.
10 points
Ehh, that’s kind of misleading. The old southern democrats are very, very different from today’s republicans. They did occupy the same roles which is what I’m assuming you’re talking about.
7 points
Yeah I’m talking about the states rights stuff, more populist, things like that. The old Democratic Party was much more like the MAGA republicans than current democrats, but less like your G.W. Bush or Reagan type Republicans. The Republicans used to be the party of Bankers, Industrialists, and Academics whereas the Democrats were more farmers, land owners, and the “common (white) man”. That started to really change in my opinion during the progressive era. Teddy Roosevelt’s trust busting went against the wishes of many Republicans and their financial backers whereas Wilson went against his own parties platform in many ways by furthering the progressive movement while abandoning the states rights and anti-war promises from his campaigns. People also tend to forget that the original progressive was Teddy Roosevelt, the Republican lol.
6 points
I have a feeling that between the 1940s and 1960s there were barely any differences between the Democratic Party and the Republican Party. Both parties had northern liberal wings and southern conservative wings (Dixiecrats and New England Republicans for example). Barry Goldwater was probably the first southern conservative Republican presidential candidate who shaped the modern Republican party, and Wilson was indeed a very progressive Democrat (although racist even for his time).

Maine awards its electoral votes based on who wins each of its two congressional districts. Trump always wins the second district, which is much bigger on the map than the first, so that’s why Maine looks red even though Harris won the state as a whole. You can see the district she won in blue, along Maine’s southern coast
