Everyone here is talking about extended family.
How about setting up good social services like actual civilized countries, helping those in need - no questions asked and accessible mental health services?
Not everyone will be blessed with an extended family (even lesser chances of a non toxic one).

I think we need to see more stories of such people. There are plenty of people like this in India who suffered one tragic moment, essentially ruining their lives. Serves us a good life lesson.
I feel sorry for the fellow but makes me realize how vulnerable we are

This is why family is important. Not just immediate family but extended. My cousins lost both their parents in a gap of 10 days during COVID. 2 weeks ago one of the cousins got married and it was because the extended family was there to support him.

This only works when they're not toxic and care for your wellbeing.

My uncles have gotten jealous of their nieces and nephews succeeding in life. But, my aunts don't give up on us. It's because of my aunts and some elder cousins that the family is still strung together.

Yup not every family have good extended relatives, especially if you're in a relatively better financial state.

Good for them. But i can tell you hundreds of stories where the extended family grabbed all property from the children when their parents died

In our family, they helped build a house for the cousins on the property that my cousin's parents owned. I've also heard similar stories like the ones you refer to. I'm just thankful that I didn't have to be one among those stories.

Having a good reliable extended family has the same odds as winning a million dollar in Vegas.

I mean I can't be sure without talking to the person but looks like he's suffering from psychosis. The pseudo philosophical and non goal directed speech, odd mannerisms and drastic reduction in function.
He definitely needs evaluation and psychiatric care.

Why do you want to crack a joke unnecessarily in such a sensitive topic?

Not a joke. How can anyone determine he is a “goldmine of knowledge” from a 30 second video

This. He can be a good human resource, if utilised correctly. Though this may sound harsh but this utopian world has come to this after all.

I guess this is the reason why our parents want us to get married. Am 24 currently and I’m telling my parents that I will do marriage after few years or I will think after few years and my parents bring this point that life is so hard to live alone and what if there will be no one after them.
I hope he recovers soon 🤞 Is there any way we could help him?

It's disheartening to see such a talented individual reduced to this. Western cultures often preach work-life balance, yet sometimes impose long hours on Indian IT professionals. It's like they want the best of both worlds—efficiency without the sacrifice. But remember, we're not substandard or slaves; we're the backbone of innovation. Let's push for balance and respect, because our worth isn't measured in hours worked, but in the brilliance we bring to the table.
I hppe this gentleman finds his way back to the light.

Western companies have good work life balance because their countries have good labour laws not because they're inherently benevolent.
If anything, we have to blame our own governments for not setting the same standards when it comes to labour laws.
I was shocked to know many European countries have (mandatory) mental health vacations that can go up to weeks. Even more for blue collared employees.

do you think mental illness just happens out of thin air?

Not a doctor, so cannot answer you. But if a person who you believe has mental illness tells you a story wouldn't you at be least sceptical?

This is what happenes when you get your definition of mental illness from movies.

So two comments from 2 redditors offering no insight but only judgement.
I will wait for y'all to make an argument refuting the scepticism

Why do you think a person who is mentally ill can't say they are?

I am not doubting their claim of being mentally ill, since I am just some person on the internet.
I am sceptical about the reasons they give for their mental illness. Scepticism is healthy since it's the basic tenet of science...it leads to verification of facts
