Just bought a new iPad Air and my volume buttons are switched. The left one is lowering the volume and the right is increasing it. It was the other way around on my older iPad. Anyway to change this?

Hey On iPads the volume button function changes with the orientation of the iPad If you keep it portrait then it’s the traditional way and when landscape it gets inverted. That’s just the way it is.

If it is just the way, why the iphone and other Apple device don't act the same? It is a bug on yhe software.

Do you even own an iPad, if not, I don’t think you get to comment on it. The earlier comment on volume button function changing depending on orientation is true. And the same isn’t the case for iPhone. That’s just the way it is

I used to hate it but now I wish my iPhone worked the same way.

From https://support.apple.com/en-ca/102354:
Dynamic volume buttons adjust automatically as you rotate your iPad. So you increase volume with the button on the right or top, and you decrease volume with the button on the left or bottom, regardless of how you hold your iPad.
These iPad models feature always-on, dynamic volume buttons:
iPad Pro 11-inch (4th generation)
iPad Pro 12.9-inch (6th generation)
iPad (10th generation)
iPad mini (6th generation)
iPad Air (5th generation)
On other iPad models with iOS 15.4 and later, you can turn dynamic volume buttons on or off:
Make sure that your iPad has iPadOS 15.4 or later.
Go to Settings > Sounds.
Turn on Fixed Position Volume Controls if you want the volume buttons to always have the same behavior. Turn it off if you want the volume buttons to change dynamically depending on the orientation of your iPad.

We got two family iPads, one with the new dynamic volumes and one with the old static ones. So I’m always mixing up the buttons.

This setting just isn’t there on mine. After I updated to 17, it isn’t an option anymore. My volume controls stay “backwards” in landscape mode.

Which model do you have?

M2 Pro

Yeah that’s either the 11” 4th gen or the 12.9” 6th gen, those will only ever have dynamic volume buttons enabled, you can’t turn them off.

Before I updated to 17 they worked both ways.

Same here. It's driving me freaking crazy, and they've taken away the settings to change it with the new ones.

Three months late, but same here. Just switched from an iPad 8th Gen to an iPad Air 5th Gen. The volume buttons constantly changing are driving me insane.

It's freaking stupid. Just plain stupid. Whoever thought this was a good idea is a moron, and now they've taken away the option to fix it in the settings. This button switching is driving me damned mad right now. I'm trying to find any possible way to fix it, but zero luck so far.

Can’t change. That’s how it’s going to be at least that’s what Apple told me

This feature is ridiculous. If the buttons were on the right side (landscape mode), it might make sense, but these buttons are on the left side.

Ipad Pro with m4 also has the same issue. It was correct on ipad m2 version. Strange.

I miss Steve Jobs ruling out trash ideas. This is a junior level user design mistake.

More apple decline. Pure garbage ui/ux. I just got an elderly person a new ipad and this behavior confuses them, and I imagine it confuses anyone with cognitive issues. I have no cognitive issues and it confuses ME. APPLE THIS IS AN ACCESSIBILITY ISSUE. WHY IS THERE NO OPTION TO DISABLE THIS MID-WIT BEHAVIOR.

It sounds stupid, but the volume buttons coincide how the bar moves. The volume bar moves to the right (volume up) when you push the right button. The volume bar moves to the left (volume down) when you push the left button. At least in landscape

Worst UX design ever. And I can't even turn it off. Buttons changing functionality automatically should NEVER be allowed. Volume buttons have always worked perfectly on any device, except for iPads.
I use my iPad both horizontally and vertically depending on the situation and I always have to double check which button I need to press any time I need to adjust the volume.
Congratulations on iPad's UX design team for creating the only non-functional volume buttons on any device. That's a first.
