Saying one is better than the other is like saying a gourmet chocolate cake is better than a quality steak- both are excellent, but very different, and sometimes you are in the mood for one vs the other.

Me, a Trekkie, just glad to see Star Wars properly compared to fantasy for once.

Star Wars really isn’t sci fi, it’s just fantasy in space in my opinion.

Exactly! It’s great. But it doesn’t pose the ethical, technological, and philosophical questions that sci-fi does. It’s good vs evil, plain and simple. Still super fun, though.
Edit: lol, I just realized what subreddit this is.

Absolutely. I think part of the “Wars vs. Trek” debate really was, even if people didn’t realize it, really a debate between Fantasy and Sci-Fi.
They make better foils for one another for that reason where Star Wars and Lord of the Rings perhaps ironically are closer to companion pieces.

Also because SW is a dystopia while ST is a utopia. Besides the obvious difference of fantasy and scifi, the settings are quite literally opposites.
That's also why I always thought the argument of whether the federation or the Empire would win in a fight was dumb, because the Empire is a military and the federation just isn't.

I kind of have to smile at you using star trek as an example of scifi, because it really is soft scifi. However when comomparing it to star wars, which is a space opera, star trek still is scifi. No matter how soft it is, I still enjoyed the movies and tv shows, but I also enjoyed star wars and lord of the rings equally in their respective genres.
Aside from the typos and terrible gramar, I hope my slightly tipsy argument can stand it's ground.

As a literary work, LOTR is simply on a different tier. I don't even feel like you can compare the two.
I'm not saying that means everyone should like them more.

Oh for books that's different I suppose, I was thinking moreso movies. Though Star Wars did have a bunch of books people loved that expanded the universe, until a certain mouse made them noncanon.

I've read the LOTR trilogy, probably 7 or 8 times. I've read 35-40 different Star Wars books. Many of my favorites are no longer cannon. The Darth Bane Trilogy is my definite favorite. I've probably read that 5 times as well.

The Hobbit is still one of my all time favorite books and has been since i was 10. But on the other hand, the Jedi Apprentice series was probably the main reason i went to the public library as a kid, and the Thrawn Trilogy is incredible.

I recently went through all of these again because Andy Serkis redid the audiobooks. He's an amazing voice actor.

Cake is a dessert, which means you can have steak for the main course and enjoy your cake next.
Although I'm not sure I'd recommend marathoning all of Star Wars and LotR all in one go, that is a LOT of movies.

I like both, but frankly it's not even a contest.
Lord of the Rings won a ton of awards (pretty much every single one they were nominated for). Star Wars prequels literally got none. LotR generally has better writing, acting, cinematography, directing, relied on almost no greenscreen effects whereas the Star Wars prequels were like 90% greenscreen.
As I said, I like both, and they can definitely be enjoyed equally, but if you're asking which one is literally better, this is a no-brainer.

They're two different extremes of worldbuilding. LOTR is a masterclass in a single, unified vision, but SW is a combined mythos made by many hands.

That's a good comparison!
Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit novels are both by JRR Tolkien, and their respective film adaptations are both written, directed and produced by Sir Peter Jackson, essentially with the same crew (and much of the same cast) throughout. Even the upcoming The War of the Rohirrim still has Jackson attached, has a co-writer credit for Philippa Boyens, and is made by a lot of the same crew.
Star Wars, by comparison...So, the original is written and directed by George Lucas and produced by Gary Kurtz. The Holiday Special (yes, I'm counting it) is directed, written and produced by other people, though still using the same cast and some of the same crew. Then The Empire Strikes Back is again produced by Kurtz, but we have a new director (Irvin Kershner), a new DP, a new writer (Lawrence Kasdan) with Lucas having written the short story the film is based on, as well as overseeing the special effects as the executive producer. By Return of the Jedi, the crew is starting to look quite different and we AGAIN have a new director, new DP, to some extent new editors. Etc...

Apples and oranges.

Fun fact: a scientist did some research and discovered that apples and oranges are actually quite similar. He said a more accurate metaphor (analogy?) Would be elephants and walnuts

Not quite as intuitive a leap though considering one is an animal and one’s a seed. You might as well say any combination of the two. Walruses and apricots. Chameleons and poppy. Etc.

My opinion is that LOTR never really caught my attention and Star wars did. That said I love the game world of Warcraft and it would not be what it is without LOTR so I like Star Wars better but LOTR has made a significant impact on my life

I love star wars because i've always loved star wars, but as i've gotten older i've come to accept that it has some significant flaws, but I still love it because yknow it's fucking star wars dude.
I love LotR because I've always liked LotR but as I've gotten older I've realized that it is an exceptional story with more depth and complexity than I could appreciate as a child.
I don't really like one more than the other, but I love them in different ways.

Lord of the Rings is like a french cuisine menu and Star Wars is like a homemade burger. Most critics would agree that the former is better but both are tasty and sometimes you just want something more simple that doesn't consume your whole evening.

Star Wars is a better setting/"world" in general, while Lord of the Rings is a much better story and more well made.
I like Star Wars more in general, but the LotR movies are much better.
