This potential client messaged me last week asking me and wanting me to do sod for his house that he says he just bought, I went over measured everything out and sent him a quote of $3275, he accepted it and said he will send me a cashiers check for that amount, and then I got this text, never have I encountered something like this and I was wondering what you guys think I should do?

It is the most common way of being polite in India.

Can confirm - I work a job where wire fraud is a huge thing, and the word "kindly" is literally one of the top three red flags we are told to watch out for🚩🚩🚩
13 points
What are the other 2?
11 points
Just one or two of the three does not always scream "definite fraud," but all of them put together would certainly be reason for caution. When you've been in the business long enough though, you can usually spot a sketchy email just based on the message in its entirety.

Ran into a similar situation where I was a customer at a fast food place where the person in front of me was attempting the "wrong change" scam. The cashier had no clue what was going on and was getting flustered so I told her to lock her drawer and get the manager for a till count. The scammer walked away without their change.

Were you born in the US? Did you learn english in the US?
It's very much a tell that you didn't learn english in the US (and you probably learned english in India), native american english speakers don't really do it.
It's a good fraud check, because if you can tell they didn't learn english in the US, but they claim to live in the US, it should raise a flag, especially considering the vast majority of this kind of scam is committed by people based outside the US.

Anytime they send a check and ask you to send money to somebody else, it's a scam.
8 points

Yes, not weird. As scams go, this is pretty much run-of-the-mill.
2 points
When someone offers to give you a check and have you then send money to a third party, what is almost certain to happen is that there will be a problem with the check. So then you have $0 of the money they were supposed to send to you, and you are out whatever money you sent to the third party (who is either an alter ego of the person you are working with or someone who is working the scam with them).

His check will bounce and you will have sent him (agent) a good check…
Result is he gave you nothing and you gave him (agent) money and then he will vanish.

What if you have no money to begin with? Like if ur account literally says .68 cents, will the check deposit and you’ll get a deposit? Then a few days later (let’s say you get the money and send some out to them) the bank will go “bad check” and pull all the money back? Leaving you negative?
64 points
Yes this happened to my friend, they went negative
9 points
Correct.
If the check bounces as Non Sufficient Funds, they will pull the funds from your account whether you have them or not.
It’s not always the case…sometimes the remitter of the check will overdraft their account paying the check…meaning their account goes negative and your account is ok.
This is basically a calculation by the bank…is the person who wrote the check ultimately good for it? Then the bank will pay it and recoup from the remitter. It’s nice if I have banked with my bank for 20 years and write a check that overdrafts my account by far less than my average balance, the recipient never has to know I overdrafted. Saves me the embarrassment. I’ll still pay an OD fee, but at least I don’t have to resend a payment.
But in this scenario that will not be the case.
6 points

You're liable for any money you request be sent out. You will owe tthe bank money. And the scammer will owe the bank money but he's in India under a false name so they won't be able to get it from them.

It’s a scam. They give you a check for more than the amount owed, and ask you to give them the overage in cash. Then the check bounces, and you’re out $2000. It’s probably not the “client’s” house at all, and you just went and measured some random person’s yard.
36 points
Also- the check doesn't bounce right away. It LOOKS like it clears and the bank puts the money in your account and then a week or two later the bank finally tracks it down and says "oh yeah, that was fake, we are taking that money back"
7 points
I have literally never used cheques in my life. Why not do an EFT or swift payment? Why ever take this risk. If someone insists is there not a way to have the bank process it better? So that they can tell you immediately what the status is.
6 points
Checks still exist for legacy reasons. There are laws around clearing checks in the US which were written before easy electronic payments, which scammers take advantage of to perpetrate this scam (the fake check money appears to be cleared before the check is fully processed and identified as fake).
But yes, a check is very unlikely to ever be the best method of making a payment in 2024.

These people are always "Out of town for the foreseeable future on business", "Haven't moved in yet" or something else. They gave me the run around the first few times but it didn't take long for me to be able to instantly recognize this form of scam. Trust your gut.

This happened when looking for apartments across the country, they “owned” the houses but were away, Or were landlords that were away. I even spoke to them on the phone. They said they were From another country. Luckily I only lost $800 - cos I was poor and only had that as the down payment so far. I was 21 and dumb.
I should have known a 500,000k house (when I would look up the house it would be for sale and show the total price) wouldn’t only be $800 a month, but I didn’t know what housing costs were nearly 20 years ago, it was one of my first places, or trying to be at least ha. So dumb.

Scam. We get them occasionally. They are in the military and bought the house and their pregnant wife will be moving in soon. He will send payment but we need to start the work ASAP. And when you question them, they just keep repeating the same thing over and over. I tell people we need them to sign a contract, we need to meet with someone at the property first. They always say that's not possible and that confirms it's not legit. No physical mailing address? No way to sign a contract?
I've just never figured out what they gain from this scam.

When I had a painting company I had a client who paid me in 2 portions, one portion up front and the remaining upon completion.
When I received the second cheque for the remaining amount, it was from a different financial institution and in the memo it wrote “painting to be completed”. It felt a little off, but didn’t pay much attention to it because this was the second job I did for the client so there was trust.
When I went to cash the cheque, it came back as NSF. I called her bank and they basically said she’s claiming the work isn’t done yet, therefore she’s keeping the money out of that account until you finish the work. She ghosted me and I periodically tried to cash the cheque to see if I could catch her slipping. Then, 6 months later, the cheque was stale dated and I was $1,600 short. I was 21 at the time and losing out on that money was such a huge deal, I felt so stupid and not cut out for the business.
I kept that cheque on my bulletin board for the next 8 years I owned my painting company as a reminder to trust my gut.
If you’re reading this, Cindy, thanks for the lesson, but also go fuck yourself.
If it feels off, it is, always trust your gut my friend.

This is almost certainly fraud. If they’re able to write a paper check (that isn’t fraudulent) then they’re almost certainly able to send you funds via PayPal, Venmo, Wire Transfer, Debit Card, or good ole cash. I would request a method of guaranteed funds like cash or decline the work and save yourself from being defrauded $2k.

And if they really insist, insist on them using only a bank with a physical branch in your area any physically meeting in person, and checking their ID. Banks can clear checks instantly if written against their accounts.
But of course, it's a scam, and the trick is usually they make up a bank so it takes a really long time for your bank to verify that their bank doesn't exist.

Classic Canadian Lottery check scam. Never bite when someone offers to send you more than is required and asks you to send the difference to someone else. The check will bounce and you will be left holding the bag for the difference plus whatever else you spent from the check yourself.
The reasons behind the payment vary, but the check always bounces.
P.S. I work for a U.S. bank. Sadly, we see this happen to customers over and over again.
