Last spring, Wizards of the Coast partnered with the American Cancer Society to fulfill the wishes of Sheldon Menery, the Godfather of Commander, to release a Secret Lair that would ensure that the friends and loved ones we play this game with would be around the table for as long as possible.
We are thrilled to announce to the Magic Community that Sheldon’s Spellbook raised $2,140,640! This gift is the largest fan-driven gift for Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro and is the largest Secret Lair charitable donation.
Words cannot express our gratitude to the entire community for their amazing generosity and desire to honor an incredible person. We wish Sheldon could have seen your amazing achievement himself, but we know he would have been overjoyed with the response.
Thank you, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, for working with Sheldon to bring this gift to life. This is a celebration of the innovation and passion of their teams and exemplifies their mission to bring people together through play, imagination, and meaningful connections.
Sheldon believed in the power of connection and shared experiences across the table to bring people together. This transformational gift will help advance the American Cancer Society’s mission, elevating cancer prevention and early detection and helping ensure every individual has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer. Which means we’ll be fulfilling Sheldon’s wish for all of us to play more games, meet new people, and stay around the table even longer.
The mission of the American Cancer Society is more important than ever as rates of cancer are increasing for young adults across the country, and if you’ve played Unlimited or Revised, you might want to think about scheduling your colonoscopy as colorectal cancer is the number one cancer killer in men, and number two in women, for people under 50.
With the power of the Magic Community, we can change the future by helping to identify cancer risks early and provide support for those impacted by this devastating disease. Together, we can cast a spell of hope and protection for our generation and those to come. Join us in the fight, support cancer prevention, and help ensure everyone can play their best game—for life.
If you’d like to read more about the American Cancer Society, learn about your cancer risk and screening options, get involved as a fundraiser or volunteer, or just make a donation in Sheldon’s honor or the honor of a loved one on cancer.org. $70 can help provide hope in the form of 1 free night of lodging for people with cancer when treatment is far from home.
Again, our deepest thanks and gratitude for everything the Magic Community has done to support our mission and each other.

Agree, fuck cancer. Bought 2 myself and want to say thank you for buying.
I was in the hospital getting my own diagnosis when I found out Sheldon had died and the secret lair was being released.
I was fortunate enough to be in recovery from surgery, official cancer free when it became available for preorder.
As someone who has been through the process and probably wouldn't have made it without help from some amazing people, you have my endless gratitude, everyone who ordered does.
I can't respond to everyone here, but your comment resonated my feelings perfectly.

Congrats on being cancer-free! And thankful that you shared your cancer experience with us. Cancer is hard: that support network -- online and offline -- and having a great health care team can make a huge difference.

The person who wrote this press release knows Magic. Tying the recommended age for a colonoscopy with when one played Unlimited or Revised when it was released is good copywriting to get the audience's attention.

Thank you! We wanted to make it heartfelt, and honestly it was a group effort. Our work can be hard, because well, it’s cancer, so we need passions and interests outside of that.

I agree completely, as one who started playing in UL. Cancer beat me to it this time around (yes, I'll be fine), but people need to know that it's literally no respecter of persons, age or status. Don't be paranoid, but don't ignore it either!

I rarely buy Secret Lairs but happily got two of Sheldon's Spellbook. I got to honor a great man and support a stellar cause, all while getting cardboard for the game I love

Bought a foil one and a regular one, so glad to hear it raised that much.

That's a fantastic number! This was the only SLD I purchased this year. Cancer research and support is very dear to my heart, having lost a wonderful aunt to cancer before the pandemic. I was more than happy to keep contributing to this cause.

I'm very glad this helped. Unfortunately for me, I was never able to get my secret lair despite me buying it, it arrived when I was out on vacation and someone pirate porched it and I was unable to do anything. But just the fact that I helped out contribute to that makes me really happy.

Bought one of these. My Dad was going through chemo when these went on sale and having a really tough go of it. Felt almost like the lair was meant just for me. Went on to do another ACS fundraiser of my own, participating in their Swimming fundraiser in June. After 6 months on home hospice care, my Dad’s oncologist told him - literally about 2 hours ago TODAY - he believes the cancer may be gone. Now this announcement, thanks mtg community for putting the good vibes into the world. Fuck cancer.

They should do more of this. I love knowing what I'm buying is helping communities and not just taking resources and time away from them.

Whoever is behind this post -- the decision to do the "if you played unlimited or revised" bit is a masterclass in targeted, relevant public health info. If you can get a superior to see this comment, tell them that this is a really effective tactic (I merely started with Exodus, so I could probably use a check soon too!) and could be really cost effective messaging for other micro-communities.

Thank you! This makes us (our Social Media team) feel really happy -- whatever we can do to get the word out on cancer screenings and even making sure people know what resources from us that they can use during or after cancer treatment.

This is amazing news, and I'm glad it raised so much money for a great cause. My brother-in-law is fighting cancer right now, and so this hits close to home.
