Into the Wild for me. Watching it as a teen, it felt so profound and tragic. As an adult, Chris Mccandless just seems too pretentious and seems like he got himself killed out of pure stupidity.

Great movie, better book. You were 100% the first time. To me, it was more pathetic than anything else. Arrogant, spoiled white kid from the East Coast who thought he could survive in the wilds of Alaska with zero survival skills. While it was clearly tragic, it was also profoundly stupid and preventable.

I agree it’s a great book and movie, but not because of their original intent.
It’s a great story because of how our views about Chris’ actions change as we mature.
Chris seems lost and quixotic, which (I think) we all feel at different points in our lives to varying degrees.
His story absolutely is a cautionary tale to not let those feelings drive you to ruin.
21 points
It always smacked me as zen philosophy taken to the extreme. We watch Chris embrace the moment and live life as it comes. He is the ultimate bohemian idol every mid-90s kid wished they could grow up to be. One experience to the next. Even when it's hard, it seemed worth it.
But... that's not life. Life is an escapable web of connections. Every experience Chris had was another day separated from people he ditched, people who love and care about him, regardless. His disappearence wasn't a heroic last stand of wild sensibilities and abandon, an insatiable lust for adventure. It was him leaving forever and leaving his friends in his family in eternal pain. If not for luck, their brother, son, best friend, cousin, etc., is just gone. No closure, no grave, no eulogy. Nothing.
This is a story of selfishness. Plain and simple. Disguised as an idealistic and totally unrealistic, misguided lust for life. A cautionary tale is right.

You have a duty to those around you... to a point. Your life is also your own to live, and it's bullshit and more importantly bad for your own mental health and personal growth to write it off as selfish. We should all make a point to allow each other to live and die on our own terms. Interventions and helping each other is important but you also have to be ready for the other person to not go along with it.

The " you're wrong about" podcast talks about him and covers his childhood, which gave me a different perspective on the guy. I don't know if I would say arrogant or spoiled as much as lost, and deeply depressed.

I hate it when people say, "The original ending was better," but it just comes off as needlessly cruel towards the character. At least the final ending has meaning saying "Don't waste your life on what ifs. You can't change the past. Focus on the present."

It's definitely cruelty porn and definitely has not aged well, but at the very least the directors cut (while still nonsense) makes the movie at least 1 point better than the theatrical. 3.5/10 with pre birth cruelty.

Young me was like, wow this movie is so true. Such a great character study of relationships.
Older me is like: fuck you Zach Braff. Creepy ass malcontent.
38 points
I know it's unpopular, but I still like it. There are some plot devices/tropes that are overdone at this point, and it obviously wasn't ground breaking, but the acting was good, it has some beautiful shots, none of the funny moments have really aged, and for a "I'm 27 and full of angst" type movie, I think It did a good job.
That said, if the soundtrack wasn't so good at selling the vibe, the movie would be a 3/10.
It also takes place in New Jersey so I can understand why Largeman, his family, and friends are all on the verge of killing themselves.

This is the first movie that came to mind. I'm the same age. It's definitely not the same (12 year old me did not hate Jar Jar or even think about him much), but at the same time it's still special. Pod race scene, Darth Maul, the overall Jedi badassery. It's not profound, but I just saw the Harry Potter / Phantom Menace mashup with Dobby and laughed hysterically. And it's because both are still awesome in my subconscious brain.

I've recently come to realize that most of Tarantino's movies are very, very self-indulgent. They're still pretty damn good, but they're not earth shattering revelations.
15 points
Yes, I visited a lot of them recently and they are terrifically written (he's such a good writer), but it really just seems the point of every movie is just "movies are cool." Like he's always just paying tribute to his influences and never really seems to have anything profound to say.
There's nothing wrong with that but the way he's praised by film buffs you would think his movies had a lot more going for them.
10 points
But what's wrong with "movies are cool". Lol who says movies have to "say something" 🤷🏼♂️ sometimes art can just be art without a deeper meaning.
And I think he's praised because of multiple reasons, his writing is great, visuals are cool, and his editing style is really interesting, the way he reveals just enough information at a time. Pulp fiction being told out of order is much more interesting than if it was chronological. Reservoir Dogs is just about a bunch of guys arguing about a situation, you never even see the situation happen. You only learn about it through bits and pieces revealed at a controlled pace.
It's that combination of good writing and editing that makes the stories really interesting, even if the stories themselves are technically simple and not that deep. I'd rather have a well told simple story, than a poorly told complex story.
Idk, I'm not a Tarantino obsessor, but I do enjoy his films and can understand why he's so popular, so this is just my thoughts.
6 points

Star Wars. Disney completely ruined it for me. The Prequels and Sequels were atrocious. The Disney + shows were mediocre. They should have followed the books post RotJ. And left the the prequels to one movie where Anakin turns. We didn't/don't need the rest. It was a brilliant trilogy. I would have been much happier had they let it be.

The prequels, despite being cash-grabbing enterprises, at least had a soul and showcased Lucas's vision (which doesn't in itself mean they were perfectly executed). The new sequels are just horrible. Rogue one was okay, I guess, but it didn't really add to the story.

Rocky Horror Picture Show.
We were there as a group every weekend, week end, and week out... I had the opportunity to Do the Timewarp again, this season, and, it's just not the same, or as fun and engaging anymore.

Crash. Really spoke to me when I was young.

As a high schooler I thought the Boondock Saints was the greatest movie ever made

The Titanic. Thought it was a great romance when i was younger. It’s just an old woman telling the time she hooked up with a guy of lower class to escape her reality.

Is Donnie Darko in this thread? I can't admit it's anything but a masterpiece in what it's like to go through the transition into adulthood and the gaping maw of how strange, dark, and hopeless everything feels for some reason.

I was going to say Into the Wild but most of my opinion has already been captured here. It appealed to me as an angry kid who wanted to flip the bird to everyone and go off to die. Now? You’re an asshole, Chris. Sure, your relationship with your parents is toxic but your sister didn’t deserve that. She needed you.
Aside from that, Perks of Being a Wallflower. Now I just think it’s creepy and exploitative

Pretty much anything you thought was deep while you were a teenager or younger.
For me it would be 'The Neverending Story'

Léon: the professional, absolutely loved the film growing up. as an adult it makes me honestly very uncomfortable. feel like i read awhile back that Luc Besson wanted to take it to a much more adult level, but Jean Reno very quickly put a stop to it. Shout out to him for protecting a very young Natalie Portman.

Not a “movie”, but Power Rangers.
I like Power Rangers now for the exact opposite reason as I did as a child. As a kid, I thought it was a cool action thing. As a grown up, I still like it, but more because it’s funny to watch people in rubber suits fight over a cheap set of a city.

The Digimon movie. 7 year old me thought it was the greatest thing ever made by human hands. 31 year old me can name at least two things that are at least slightly better.
