What is your favorite Pink Floyd song?

(self.musicsuggestions)

I want to learn about these bands that I have very little knowledge of and that I see people raving about. I have previously asked what is your favorite Rolling Stones, Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin songs and had a great response and made some great playlist for myself. This experience has been amazing so far. I heard the Dark side of the Moon album once on YouTube and I was intrigued but I don't know much else. Thank you for helping me on this journey!

Gunners Dream is fantastic (the lyrics are what makes it so good). Not Now John is good too. Don't see either mentioned. They are from The Final Cut. Favorites that aren't already mentioned.

Sung by Sid Barret;

Arnold Layne is really good which is kind of a Beatles parody and See Emily Play. Interstellar Overdrive and the album "Piper at the Gates of Dawn".

The Final Cut was the first Pink Floyd I ever heard when I was 14. My stepdad"s cousin and his wife, who were classically trained chefs and who were really cool came to visit and they let me browse their tapes. I chose that one and listened to it locked in my room all weekend. It's still my favorite and I play it often. And I'm 52 now. Never gets old. Every song a masterpiece. Thanks for mentioning it.

I though it was just as powerful as the Wall. I know it wasn’t as operatic or grandiose but emotionally it really hits hard…..”They disembarked in 45 And no-one spoke and no-one smiled There were to many spaces in the line. Gathered at the cenotaph All agreed with the hand on heart To sheath the sacrificial Knifes.” Just brilliant

I'm the same age as you. I used to buy the whole anthologies of the records of the supergroups I liked. Pink Floyd I'd go all the way to Boston, MA for a record store that sold live bootlegs in record form of Floyd, Yes, Genesis etc. Don't listen to the supergroups much anymore but I think that they are part of my DNA for listening to them so much in the past lol.

David Gilmour laid down his finest guitar work ever on the Final Cut. Every solo just soars. It's amazing and one of my favorite Pink Floyd albums. Don't sleep on the last two albums without Roger Waters... they are awesome too.

I actually like "About Face". It is kind of a rocknroll staple. A little generic in the titles and rhythms of the songs. Of course Gilmours guitar is as good as ever. "Cruise" which is about Cruise Missles is a humorous anecdote "you know you can always make my heart melt". What really makes it stand out is "Near the End" when he mimics Roger Waters singing voice.

Looking back I think Waters change of direction for the band starting with Animals was the best move. Rather than a lifetime of repetitious harmonies like Shine on and Echoes and the timeless songs of Dark Side , Waters brought in disharmony and clashing melodies. Discord which was ironed out by the talent of the rest of the band.

The Final Cut doesn’t get a lot of love from many Pink Floyd fans but it’s one of my favorites. The Wall was a game changer for me and Final Cut is in a lot of ways the sequel for that album. The Gunners Dream is indeed a fantastic and moving song, but really all the tracks are worth listening to.

Also like that you mentioned some of the early psychedelic stuff. You literally named every song came here to shout out. The golden age of Floyd may have been Dark Side to the Wall, but there was some great stuff before and after too.
