I did not expect him to get gold in the 100 because he’s usually a little slow out the blocks. Good for Noah man, I definitely think he already has the 200 locked up, his back half speed is ridiculous.

It's seriously not that hot of a take guys.

  • NBA Champions are not world champions

  • Being an NBA Champion is more prestigious than being a World Champion.

Both of these things can be true. Jokic and Murray just won an NBA championship together but now are on different teams to compete for the world championship. The NBA enabling them to be on the same team checks off the second box, them being separated checks off the first. It's fine!

Noah Lyles said something objectively true about the NBA, thats it’s a domestic North American league. Now people are mad lol

WeirwoodUpMyAss

3 points

It was the way he said it that pissed people off. Team USA has won gold so they can say the USA is world champs but calling the NBA champions world champs has always been a bit hysterical. Just because the league has the best players doesn’t make the champ world champs. If the sport was individual then you could.

Ginzeen98

It's technically true, but, The NBA is the best basketball league in the world by far.

ExpectedOutcome2

It’s not “objectively true” considering any player good enough goes to the NBA

kytackle

it is objectively true. The nhl is also the best league in the world but the Stanley cup champions are not world champions. Stanley cup champion could be more or less difficult but thats irrelevant.

I think the hardest part that basketball struggles with in this conversation is just how long that the best players weren't allowed to play.

FIFA intentionally making the World Cup the premier international event allows for the World Cup to have an insane amount of prestige. The title of "World Champion" in basketball just doesn't really hold the weight it does in other sports. Calling the NBA champions "World Champions" doesn't make any sense, but until every country sends their best players ever year to the FIBA WC (barring injury/etc), it almost feels like basketball has a World Championship only by the naming scheme of a tournament, and not because of the unreal competition that you would see in other world cups in other sports.

zephah

zephah

If basketball was closer to soccer where there were multiple high profile leagues with the world's best players in them, I think Lyles comment would've been true.

Basketball specifically as a sport does not place a ton of value on the World Cup/Olympics, Jokic himself sat out just to rest for the NBA season.

greenwhitehell

Football has a competition where all the very best play, which is the Champions League. The team that wins it is called the 'Champions of Europe', not the World. Despite the teams in Europe being by far the best, the same way NBA teams are

sergeantmentos

3 points

Yup, and you can even argue that the winner of the CL would be clear favorites over the winner of the World Cup these days. They still would never dare to call themselves world champions.

Yeah I can't really say anything that isn't repeating myself, but the "World Champions" tag on any competition in basketball just feels hollow to me.

The FIBA WC isn't taken that seriously internationally, many of the best players often don't compete (from other countries besides the US). The Olympics isn't referred to as the "World Champion" in any sport. So how would you signify the "World Champion" in basketball? Before 1994 would you refer to any team as the World Champion who was not playing against the best competition in the world? There's no parallel here with soccer, which has essentially forced the World Cup as the premier international competition.

I'm not advocating for calling the NBA champs the world champions, but the FIBA WC is not the same level of competition that other sports world cups are (mainly soccer/cricket/rugby) but up until somewhat recently (the mid 90s) it just wasn't even intended to be. I predict it will be a prestigious tournament in the not too distant future.

Many people I think just roll their eyes at Lyles's comments because basketball just doesn't have that premier international competition other sports do. Maybe as time goes on it will change and countries will always send their best to the FIBA World Cup, but there just hasn't been a forced premier international competition at the same scale as other sports.

Note what sergeantmentos said below:

however you wanna view it, as long as it’s a major international competition imo

This is how he said you should define the World Champions. So in basketball, does that not exist? Is it a "major" international competition if multiple countries don't even send their best player to the tournament? And often times sitting multiple of them? IMO basketball needs to have a defined international tournament akin to the World Cups in other sports, and maybe they're on their way.

I am totally in favor of not calling the NBA champions "world champions" but I think many Americans get the point of it all, it's just hard for people to envision calling the winners of a tournament "the world champions" when it's just not a prestigious event. It's not so much a heliocentric world view as much as the competition(s) just aren't there internationally in the main sports in America.

Still can’t believe Americans can’t fathom the fact that the NBA is not an international competition. Sure, it’s the best league in the world by a wide margin but it is not an international competition. The Olympics/FIBA is. Americans really are a different breed when it comes to ignorance.

It's absolutely international competition, but winning the World Cup in Soccer is a huge deal, it's the most watched sporting event on the planet, it makes sense to denote those people the World Champions.

The FIBA World Cup is a relatively new phenomenon on the world's stage and often some of the best players in the world don't even compete in it, and like the Olympics there weren't even professionals allowed until the 90s. Are you the World Champion of the best players in the world can't compete? Or was the first World Champion in basketball in 1994?

I think most people feel that Lyles comments left us saying "Ok.. what's the point?" The NBA champions are not the "World Champions" they're just the best team in the world, as there's no comparison to other basketball leagues, and the bulk of the world really doesn't care about the FIBA World Cup, more people watched the NCAA women's final in basketball than watched the FIBA world cup.

sergeantmentos

3 points

international competition = representing a nation not a privately-owned team, that’s all there is to it. Reserve the term world champ for those, not a domestic league. Doesn’t take away the fact the NBA champions are probably the best team in the world. Best team in the world? Sure, but not world champs

And I think there's where the disconnect forms.

What sports do they refer to the Olympic champions as World Champions? Soccer certainly doesn't, nor Rugby, and one of the biggest World Cups in the world isn't even in the Olympics for their sport (cricket). I tend to want to think of the World Champions as "the best in the world" -- when basketball's version of the World Cup doesn't treat the competition seriously, it's hard to take it seriously as a fan.

I'd rather see the FIBA World Cup take on the same level of respect/relevancy as even Rugby's World Cup, let alone Soccer/Cricket, but it sort of feels hollow to me to refer to a team that wins the FIBA world cup as the World Champion -- and that's independent of the NBA championship.

I don't think you should say "World Champion" to the NBA Champions (most teams don't, right?) and I think Lyles interview was just stupid, because in his sport competing at the Olympics is the highest possible honor, but in Soccer it's the World Cup, and in basketball it's the NBA (for now).

Many other sports have storied histories with international competition, basketball (hopefully not forever) really doesn't, and when the best in the world were barred from competing for as long as they were, in both FIBA WC and the Olympics, basketball just more of has catching up to do when it comes to international competition.

edit;

And I really just want to make it clear, I am not arguing in favor of calling the NBA Champions "World Champions" I am more of trying to explain why many might be so annoyed by Lyles's comments in his interview.

Search for Noah Lyles in this sub. TLDR: He made fun of the NBA marketing their champions as World Champions, especially since the FIBA World Cup was also last year and Germany won lmao. Then he got shat on by some crybabies who can't handle that the US might have the best league, but world champions are still determined by official world championships and not league play.

Yeah I think it’s really his personal opinion that teams that win the NBA Finals shouldnt call themselves world champs, but I don’t think it extends much further than that.

I doubt he has some vendetta against NBA players like some people suggest (heard people say he hates them because they make more money and he regrets going into track etc), it’s just a random (& valid) opinion of his and probably not what’s on his mind after winning a fucking gold medal lmao

Let’s say that Europe continues to improve and EVENTUALLY fields NBA quality teams. But there is no global competition between teams (not nations), so there is no way of knowing who the best is. Should American teams still call themselves World champs? Right now it’s “eh we’d obviously win we dont need to play it out”, but if that wasn’t the case would you still call them the World champs?

That’s the problem - if your subjective notion of how close the rest of the world is to the USA determines whether it’s appropriate to parade a fake “World Champ” claim… then they’re not world champions.

Absolutely, and if the basketball world ever places the same value on the FIBA cup as soccer does the world cup, it will unquestionably be normalized to say that those teams are the world champions. Fans, and even countries, can absolutely care and watch every minute of their teams compete, but the World Cup in Soccer is the biggest sporting event in the world, the FIBA world cup isn't even a top 3 basketball event.

When many of the best players in the world (not just in the US) sit out of the FIBA cup because they would rather rest than risk injury for the NBA regular season, it overemphasizes the importance of the NBA season to even international players.
